Lemon Ave Onramp Finally Comes To Fruition

Diamond Bar, CA – The long awaited Lemon Avenue onramps and off ramps are finally being constructed, with most of the foundation and grading done.

The cities of Diamond Bar and Industry, in cooperation with the Alameda Corridor East (ACE) Construction Authority and the California Department of Transportation District 7 (Caltrans) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), started constructing the new interchange on State Route 60 (SR-60) at Lemon Avenue. The project will improve traffic operations by providing direct access to SR-60 from the surrounding areas.

The project will construct a partial (three-legged) interchange, a WB on-ramp, and EB on-and off-ramps from Lemon Avenue. It will also permanently remove the existing EB off – and on-ramps at Brea Canyon Road. An auxiliary lane from the proposed EB on-ramp to the connector to SB SR-57 will also be constructed.

The ramps will help congestion on the local level that has been plaguing Walnut, Diamond Bar, and surrounding cities. There are many industrial sites that have lots of employees who use the existing ramps on Fairway, Golden Springs and Grand Avenue. These new ramps should help those congested areas significantly as follows:

The construction will cause some delays, as Friday, February 23, 2018 at 10:00 p.m. – Monday, February 26, 2018 at 5:00 a.m. 2 lanes of eastbound SR-60 will CLOSED between Fairway Drive and Brea Canyon Road Eastbound on-ramp from northbound Fairway Drive CLOSED.
Friday, March 2, 2018 at 10:00 p.m. – Monday, March 5, 2018 at 5:00 a.m. 2 lanes of eastbound SR-60 will be CLOSED between Fairway Drive and Brea Canyon Road Eastbound Brea Canyon Road will also be CLOSED.
Friday, March 9, 2018 at 10:00 p.m. – Monday, March 12, 2018 at 5:00 a.m. (tentative)
2 lanes of eastbound SR-60 will be CLOSED between Fairway Drive and Brea Canyon Road Eastbound Brea Canyon Road off-ramp will be CLOSED.

Consturction began last January 23, 2017 when the street was closed for street widening and center median removal. A few months earlier crews began brush clearance in preparation of the freeway ramps. Portions of the freeway sound wall within the work area was temporarily removed during construction. Access to local businesses and residences were maintained.

The existing sound wall along EB SR-60 west of Lemon Avenue will be removed and a new sound wall will be installed along the edge of pavement of the EB off – and on-ramps.

A new traffic signal will be constructed along Lemon Avenue at the new EB ramps. Traffic signal modifications will also be made at the Golden Springs Drive/Lemon Avenue intersection and at the Golden Springs Drive/Existing EB ramp intersection near the Market World shopping center.

The construction of the new ramps at Lemon Avenue will also eliminate the Truck Route designation along Golden Springs Drive between Brea Canyon Road and Lemon Avenue. (Anthony Saude helped with story)

Quail Summit students deliver valentines to Diamond Bar seniors

DIAMOND BAR —Quail Summit Elementary leadership students made a special delivery to the Diamond Bar Senior Citizens Club on Monday.

The 25 Character Crew members arrived by school bus carrying envelopes packed with hundreds of handwritten valentines.

“Every student at our school made these cards of kindness,” shared 3rd grader Evelyn Wu.

‘We just want to make them happy!”

“I hope these Valentine’s Day cards make them smile,” commented 5th grader Joseph Hills moments before students began passing out their love letters.

“This has become a tradition, we’ve been waiting for you!” said volunteer Laura Estrada welcoming the children to the meeting held at the Diamond Bar Center.

The handmade cards featured messages like “We Love You” and “You Are Special,” and “You Are So Important to Us”

The seniors were thrilled to receive the bounty of Valentine’s Day gifts.

“They make me feel loved!” beamed Laura O’Neil who had several glittered and 3-D cards displayed at her table.

The students took turns at the microphone sharing Character Crew activities geared to make a positive difference each day in the school and community.

During the holidays, the students hosted a canned food and sock drive for area needy.

Members are currently collecting cardboard boxes and paper towel rolls for monkeys at the Santa Ana Zoo.

“It will keep their brains active,” reported Giulia Ladwig.

Next month, students will paint messages of hope on 600 rocks and leave them around the Diamond Bar community to inspire others.

“The kids are adorable!” one senior commented while admiring the work of the young service-minded group.

“We hope these valentines bring joy and let you know how very special you are to us,” said 4th grader Aiden Sou.

“We love you!” smiled first grader Elisabeth Ng as the audience broke out in applause.

“We don’t often take the time to put words down on paper,” said teacher Kathy McLean.

“This opportunity gives our students a chance see how much impact their kind words have.”

The seniors club provides generous support to the school each year, funding several special activities including an upcoming author visit.

“We appreciate you more than words can say!” said elementary learning specialist Leann Legind.

Impossible

In C.S. Lewis’s famous book, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, there is a remarkable scene where the evil White Witch killed the powerful Lion named Aslan.  Aslan had willingly surrendered himself to the Witch.  She and her minions had bound, ridiculed and humiliated the Lion and she had personally killed him by plunging a dagger into his heart.

The wicked Witch had killed the mighty Aslan.  She had won, he had lost – or so it seemed.  Aslan’s friends had witnessed his execution from afar.  They had embraced his cold, dead body.  They wept as they walked away knowing their friend and leader was dead.

However, moments later the stone table where Aslan had been killed was shattered and Aslan’s body vanishes.  Those who witnessed his death are confused.  What happened?  What does this mean?  Where did Aslan go?

To their amazement, Aslan reappears alive.  He is no longer dead – he is alive again.  His followers are stunned.  But, there he is alive again.  They not only saw him with their eyes, but they could also touch him with their hands and talk with him and hear him speak.  He was really was alive again!

As C. S. Lewis continues his story, the forces of good and evil find themselves in a fierce battle.  The White Witch leads her army in battle against the followers of Aslan.  The Witch’s forces are winning and things look bleak for Aslan’s army.  But, suddenly Aslan arrives at the scene of the battle bringing reinforcements.

When the White Witch sees the powerful Lion, Aslan, she says in disbelief – “Impossible”! This can’t be the great Lion Aslan.  She had personally thrust the dagger into his heart.  She saw him die.  She knew he was dead.  How can he be alive again?  It is “Impossible”!

Many people may not realize that the reason Christians celebrate Easter is to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.  All of the biblical writers provide detailed accounts of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.   These events are the foundation of the Christian faith.  You can read them for yourself in New Testmanet books like Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20-21.

For some people, the idea that a dead man could come back to life seems unlikely if not impossible.  Why would intelligent, educated people believe a story like that?  How can someone believe in something that seems impossible?  There are no photographs.  There is no DNA evidence to examine.  Why do millions of Christians around the world believe in the literal, physical resurrection of Jesus Christ?

I would like to share with you in my next article why I believe that Jesus really did rise from the dead.  There are a number of reasons that His resurrection is not only possible but probable.  I hope you will dust off your Bible and take time to read one or more of the chapters listed above.  Examine the details carefully.

I look forward to sharing more of my thoughts with you in my next article.  Easter is coming in only a few weeks.  I hope you will make plans now to attend a church near you on Easter Sunday.

Diamond Bar Musician To Perform On National Broadcast

DIAMOND BAR — Diamond Bar High School percussionist Jeremy Davis is the recipient of the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award.

The $10,000 scholarship recipient will perform on the NPR “From the Top” live radio broadcast on Sunday, February 11 at 2 p.m.

Five featured young musicians will perform and share their stories during the 90-minute concert recorded in Boston, Massachusetts.

Jeremy, age 17, will be performing “Land” by Takatsugu Muramatsu on the marimba.

“This experience is pretty amazing!” the talented junior shared in the school’s practice room on Tuesday.

Jeremy first began playing percussion in sixth grade at South Pointe Middle School.

“It was hard, but I stuck with it!” he said.

The teen now performs in both band and orchestra in Diamond Bar High’s award-winning program.

His favorite musical experience has been participating in Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra of the United States in 2017.

With some of the scholarship funds, Jeremy plans to purchase the huge instrument, which can cost thousands of dollars.

The marimba is too large to tote back and forth like a violin, he explained.

“With percussion, we have to practice at school. Now, I can get one for home!”

The “From the Top” broadcast is a fun and easy way for families to experience classical music and get to know some inspiring people.

The special performance will also be available on a future NPR podcast.

Jeremy, who studies percussion with Kenneth McGrath, says his proudest musical accomplishment has been being selected to appear on From the Top.

Outside of music, he enjoys playing basketball and tennis.

 

Fun With Grandkids

We enjoy taking care of two of our grandchildren one day a week.  They like coming to “Grammy’s” house.  I don’t know why it is not my house too, but to them it is known as “Grammy’s” house.

One of the reasons they like to come to our house is that we have a closet full of toys, dolls, and other fun stuff.  I believe it is the toys that are the real attraction.  When they walk into the house, they head right for the closet with the toys.  Maybe they don’t have enough toys at their house!

Recently we decided to go out for lunch.  It is a lot of work to put their car seats in our car and buckle them in.  One is old enough to only need a booster seat.  The younger one has to be secured in a car seat that resembles what the astronauts used in Apollo 13!  There is no moving around when they are buckled into their car seats.

Since both of them enjoy French fries we decided to go to In N Out Burger.  Of course I enjoy In N Out, too!  It was a good choice.  The french fries are great and the employees are attentive to little kids.  One person gave stickers to both of them and another offered them official hats as well.

While we were waiting for our food, we buckled the younger one into a high chair.  She quickly caught the attention of a couple of other customers who smiled and waved at her.  She smiled, laughed and waved back as they maintained this exchange of silent greetings across the next table.

The French fries were a hit.  Our older granddaughter will only eat french fries with plenty of ketchup.  The younger one caught on to the ketchup idea too.  I had a “Double-Double” and my wife went next door to El Pollo Loco and brought back a healthy looking salad.

Don’t worry; the grandkids had a healthy lunch before we went to In N Out.  The French fries were more like dessert!

After lunch, we took time to visit the Michael’s store in the same shopping center.  Grammy wanted to look for a small craft for the older grandchild and something easier for the younger one.  I suddenly realized that she had this planned before we left the house.  There is no stopping a grandmother who has shopping for grandchildren on her mind.

Our adventure was a lot of fun.  We enjoyed a nice lunch and met some nice people.  We contributed to the economy and enjoyed our two precious little grandchildren.  It doesn’t get much better than that!

Let me encourage you to take time to enjoy some of the people in your life this week.  You may have an older parent who would enjoy doing something with you.  You may have some little ones who are happy to simply go out for French fries. You may have some restless teenagers who don’t want to spend time with their parents or grandparents.  Do something anyway.

Don’t wait, do something with someone you love.  You will be glad you did and they will too!

South Pointe’s Puppy with a Purpose

DIAMOND BAR-Passionate educators are willing to do just about anything to foster student success.

Meet Kevin Duh, a social studies teacher at South Pointe Middle School in Diamond Bar.

The out-of-the-box thinking educator has found a way to combine his desire to address the emotional needs of his 8th grade students and his love of dogs.

This year, Duh was granted permission to bring a 3-month old puppy named Laker to his class as an official therapy dog-in-training.

Since the first day of school in August, the lovable Goldendoodle, has been at Duh’s side at all times during the school day.

“I take him wherever I go because I want him to understand the dynamics of the campus,” he said.

“He’s like my shadow!”

Duh, who has been teaching for six years, said he chose the popular “designer” hybrid dog for several reasons.

“Laker has the intelligence and hypo-allergenic qualities of a Poodle, friendliness of a Golden Retriever, and people aren’t afraid of him,” he said.

“Already, two of my students have gotten over their fear of dogs,” Duh reports.

Laker, who is now 8-months old, has proven himself as a source of unconditional love to the young teens.

“This year, the kids seem much happier in the classroom,” he says.

Duh says his 160 students quickly developed a wonderful relationship with the gregarious and playful pup.

“I think he brightens our class up,” confirms Katie Song, 13.

“Sometimes when we’re feeling stressed, he’s just always there for us!”

“I like having Laker in class,” added classmate Kris Ng.

“He helps us feel better to just reach down and pet him during the day,”.

More than that, Laker is a comforting resource for students having a bad day or going through tough times with family issues.

“I know there’s a lot of brokenness in our community. He just brings a light into that,” Duh said.

“Laker provides a place where students can drop their anxieties on him.”

Duh has data that his dog has aided three students with testing anxiety during his short time on campus.

“For example, one student had a 65% average and I suggested he take Laker with him for his next test,” he explains.

“Within a couple weeks his scores went up to 84%. It’s a huge jump!”

Laker has also provided dozens of students with comfort of being a furry companion.

“I love Laker, he’s my best friend,” says classmate Kristin Joe, who doesn’t have a dog at home.

What’s it like bringing a puppy to school?

“He’s very playful, loving, likes to be petted, and be in constant contact with people,” Duh explains.

“For some reason, he has an instinct that when I’m teaching or doing something important, he holds off his energy!”

Duh admits that animals in school settings haven’t traditionally mixed, and with a dog it’s a “goliath” of a responsibility.

But this teacher is very dedicated to constantly making sure the dog is well-taken care of and that his students wash their hands after they pet him.

He also carves out time each day to “run out” Laker’s puppy energy.

“There’s a huge time commitment – it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be!” Duh admits.

The adorable curly-haired pup was even introduced as a new staff member during a Board Meeting, took an official school ID photo, and has hundreds of Instagram followers @lakerthegoldendoodle.

Laker will be able to take the test to become a certified therapy dog this summer when he reaches his first birthday.

Once Laker passes his test, the school plans to integrate the therapy dog into its social-emotional wellness program, according to Principal Susan Arzola.

The Community Club provides support by funding the puppy’s training classes and insurance.

“We are all cheering on Laker to make sure he passes all his classes!” said Arzola.

“This year, he’s a cute puppy. Next year, I want him to be a schoolwide resource,” adds Duh.

“I would also love to see this program grow throughout our district and for a therapy dog to be at every site.”

“I feel like we’ve stumbled onto something that’s untapped!” Duh adds.

For now, the puppy with a purpose will continue bringing joy to the students at South Pointe.

“Laker will be here with me as long as he’s able. It’s very exciting!” Duh said.

Two Residential Burglary Suspects Arrested In Diamond Bar

Diamond Bar – Two residential Burglary suspects were arrested on 01/05/2018 at approximately 01:00 am in the city of Diamond Bar.

Deputies responded to a call regarding suspicious males in the area of Golden Springs and Rancheria. After a search of the area, the responding deputy saw a male sitting in the vehicle that matched the description and detained the suspect. A search of the vehicle was conducted and revealed a large amount of stolen property along with burglary tools.

The second suspect was detained and arrested while on foot in the immediate area, his identification was later found in the vehicle near the stolen property.

More Family Connections

Two months ago, my wife and I traveled to New York to see Niagra Falls in western New York and visit some of her cousins near Albany on the eastern side of the state.  My wife really enjoyed reconnecting with her cousins. She had not seen some of them in over 40 years.

Over the past few years, we have also reconnected with some of my cousins who live in this part of the country. One lives in Colorado and the other lives in Arizona.  Both of these sisters have been married and have raised their own families.

Since they grew up in Colorado and my brother and I grew up in Arizona, we rarely saw our cousins. Since each of us got married and started our families in different parts of the country, we didn’t spend much time together. I don’t think we even attended our cousin’s weddings and I don’t think they were present at my wedding or my brother’s either.

Now, forty years later, our paths have reconnected. All of our parents have died. All of us have our own children and grandchildren. All of us still live in different parts of the country.  But, over the past few years, circumstances have drawn us together again.

A life threatening illness served as the catalyst to increase our communication.  My wife and I became more intentional about calling and visiting. My brother and his wife sent cards and shared books as the health of one of these cousins declined. During this journey, we also reconnected with her sister, our other cousin. After almost 40 years, we were talking and texting on a regular basis. Facebook helped too!

There was a lot of catching up to do. We enjoyed learning about their children and grandchildren.  We shared about our families and our careers. There were times of laughter and smiles as we talked about our parents and grandmother (our grandfather died before most of us were born).

Unfortunately, one of these cousins died on Thanksgiving Day after a long, difficult battle with cancer. New connections were made as we met extended family members at her memorial service. Stories were shared and there was both laughter and tears.

I’m thankful that we “reconnected” with our cousins – both my wife’s in New York and and my own cousins in the west. It has given us a new appreciation for our extended family and it has given us more motivation to keep in touch.

Let me encourage you to make an effort to reconnect with your family. We Grind Coffee Not Life at “It’s A Grind”

Diamond Bar – I love coffee, all kinds of coffee; honestly I haven’t gone a day without coffee in decades. One might say I am a coffee connoisseur. I am not a drive thru type of person I love to go inside and smell the heavenly aroma, look at the pastries, maybe even read a book and relax; I just love the atmosphere of coffee shops. In today’s America with a coffee shop on almost every corner you can imagine how happy and fulfilling a day can be for me.

During my extensive research I discovered that different coffee shops might have a pastry I like better or better merchandise for sale and still others might have a favorite coffee drink of mine. One day, while out running some errands I saw a coffee shop I had never been in before, it’s called “It’s a Grind.” I have been a regular customer there ever since.

“It’s a Grind” has everything that I love there and I know you will love it too. The coffee is for sure the best feature about it. It is by far the most exceptional coffee I have tasted compared to any of the other places I’ve been. Remember, that is a lot of places. In addition to that the atmosphere isn’t a cyber lounge for college students.

The décor is made for comfort and relaxation with big comfy chairs and couches. Two Residential Burglary Suspects Arrested In Diamond Bar

Diamond Bar – Two residential Burglary suspects were arrested on 01/05/2018 at approximately 01:00 am in the city of Diamond Bar.

Deputies responded to a call regarding suspicious males in the area of Golden Springs and Rancheria. After a search of the area, the responding deputy saw a male sitting in the vehicle that matched the description and detained the suspect. A search of the vehicle was conducted and revealed a large amount of stolen property along with burglary tools.

The second suspect was detained and arrested while on foot in the immediate area, his identification was later found in the vehicle near the stolen property.

Anyone who witnessed anything at that time and place is encouraged to call the station at 909.595.2264 or call the we-tip hotline at 800 78-CRIME.

Wash Your Car

People seem to be on edge since we have not had any rain since last March or April.  Normally, we start getting rain in Southern California in November or December. The typical rainy season extends from November to March. Now we are entering a new year with no rain in sight.

I have noticed that it usually rains after I wash my car. I don’t wash it every week. In fact, I have been a little lazy and have not washed it for many weeks. But I finally got off the couch after all the college football games were over and decided it was time to wash our two cars.

While I was busy washing both of the cars, it occurred to me that all of my effort might be in vain because it usually rains after I wash them. This is especially true during the winter months.

My suggestion is that if we all of wash our cars this month I am convinced that it will rain.  You may prefer to take your car to the Car Wash or you may prefer to do it yourself. A friend of mine recently gave me a new “waterless” car wash by McGuiers. So you can even wash your car at home without using a drop of water!

I believe that if we all band together and wash our cars that it will rain.  Can we all agree that we need some rain and the sooner the better and the more the better?

The Apostle Paul said in the book of Acts “…God did not leave Himself without a witness, but provided evidence of His goodness by giving us rain from Heaven and fruitful seasons to satisfy our hearts with food and gladness (Acts 14:17).

The changing of the seasons and rain from heaven reminds us of how dependent we are on simple things like snow, rain and running water.  Without water we cannot survive. Water is essential. Fresh water starts with rain and is stored in the snow.  Seems pretty simple but it is very essential.

Let me encourage you to wash your car this week. It will certainly increase the probability of rain. You will be glad you did and we will too! Maybe you could add a little prayer while you are at it too.  Read James 5:17-18!

Volunteers On Patrol

Diamond Bar – Are you the type of person that cares what happens to their neighbors and community? Do you feel that it is your civil duty to report a crime or wrongdoing in your neighborhood? The City of Diamond Bar has a program in place that you may be a good fit for.

The Volunteers on Patrol Program in the City of Diamond Bar is looking for individuals who are interested in being the “extra eyes and ears” for local law enforcement. Members of the Community Volunteer Patrol contribute thousands of yours each year to help patrol the City of Diamond Bar.

The job of a volunteer is simple, observe and report crimes and suspicious or unusual activity; conduct vacations checks; report graffiti vandalism; keep an eye on school and park activities; and check on the general welfare of elderly and shut in residents.

Members of the Volunteer become a representative of the Sheriff’s Department, as well the city and county administration so it is essential that they maintain an image of professionalism at all times. Their appearance, demeanor and professionalism must be above reproach while serving in the program.

The Volunteer Mission Statement for the LASD Civilian Volunteers is be dedicated to providing excellent service through relationships that build trust, create a safe environment, and enhance the quality of life in the community within a “Tradition of Service.

Vandalism at Pacos Tacos

Paco’s Tacos had the glass front door broken in at approximately midnight on Saturday December 16 according to Juan the manager. “Whoever broke the glass did it just to vandalize the place, nothing was stolen or broken” said Juan. “We have an alarm so we we knew we had a break in when it was happening on Saturday night.” We were open for business and the glass was replaced in time to be open Sunday morning” Juan said.

Paco’s Tacos is a little taco shop with a large menu located on 1131 S Brea Canyon Rd in Walnut. It can prove difficult to find authentic Mexican food in the city but stop by Paco’s if you are looking for good food at an old school price. The service is friendly and fast, the food is very good and the menu selection has something for everyone.

It isn’t the first time that somebody has vandalized the Paco’s without stealing anything, “they just like to break the window and then they don’t take anything” said Juan. “We did file a police report just like we always do” said Juan.

Avoiding Apartment Rental Scams

Diamond Bar– Rent prices in California have been skyrocketing this past year. The last thing anyone needs during these trying times is to lose money to a con artist.

The Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Department has offered the following tips when looking for apartments to avoid rental scams.

Finding an apartment can often be time consuming and emotionally frustrating. Time constraints and financial considerations can often place the apartment seeker in a vulnerable position where they can fall prey to Apartment Rental Scammers.
While Apartment Rental Scams come in a variety of schemes, they basically boil down to two types: Either the scammer has no authority to offer an existing apartment for rent or the scammer is trying to rent a fictitious apartment. In either case, the goal of the scammer is to get the victim to pay money upfront for a list of available apartments in the area or to arrange the rental of a particular apartment.

How Rental Scams Work
Scammers know that finding the right apartment or vacation rental can be hard work, and a seemingly good deal is hard to pass up. They’ve been known to game some vacation rental websites and bulletin boards. The take-away: when you’re looking for a rental, its caveat renter renter beware.
Hijacked Ads
Some scammers hijack a real rental or real estate listing by changing the email address or other contact information, and placing the modified ad on another site. The altered ad may even use the name of the person who posted the original ad. In other cases, scammers have hijacked the email accounts of property owners on reputable vacation rental websites.
Phantom Rentals
Other rip-off artists make up listings for places that aren’t for rent or don’t exist, and try to lure you in with the promise of low rent, or great amenities. Their goal is to get your money before you find out.
Signs of a Scam
Being savvy when you’re in search of a rental is well worth the effort. Here are some signs you may be dealing with a scam:
They tell you to wire money
This is the surest sign of a scam. There’s never a good reason to wire money to pay a security deposit, application fee, first month’s rent, or vacation rental fee. That’s true even if they send you a contract first. Wiring money is the same as sending cash once you send it, you have no way to get it back.
They want a security deposit or first month’s rent before you’ve met or signed a lease. It’s never a good idea to send money to someone you’ve never met in person for an apartment you haven’t seen. If you can’t visit an apartment or house yourself, ask someone you trust to go and confirm that it’s for rent, and that it is what was advertised. In addition to setting up a meeting, do a search on the owner and listing. If you find the same ad listed under a different name, that’s a clue it may be a scam.
They say they’re out of the country
But they have a plan to get the keys into your hands. It might involve a lawyer or an “agent” working on their behalf. Some scammers even create fake keys. Don’t send money to them overseas. If you can’t meet in person, see the apartment, or sign a lease before you pay, keep looking. What if the rental itself is overseas? Paying with a credit card or through a reputable vacation rental website with its own payment system are your safest bets.
How to Report Scams
If you find yourself the target of a rental scam, report it to your local law enforcement agency and to the FTC. Contact the website where the ad was posted, too.

The Christmas Train

I have shared in the past that I received a Lionel Train set for Christmas when I was a young boy. We have a photo of me and my father and my grandfather playing with my new train on Christmas morning in the 1950’s.

The train set was lost for many years in a closet in my parent’s home. I thought they had given it away after I got married. When we helped my parents move out of their house, my brother discovered the train set but he didn’t tell anyone.  He surprised me on Christmas Day with this mystery box.

We have a photo of me, and my children and my father playing with that old train at Christmas in the 1980’s.  After we moved to Diamond Bar, that Christmas train ended up on a shelf in our garage for many years.  Finally, some of our adult children asked me to get the train down and set it up for their children to see.

I was reluctant to get it down and set it up. I didn’t know if the train even worked anymore.  But, children and grandchildren can be pretty persuasive. Last year, I got the train box down and set it up around the Christmas tree.  To my surprise, the train worked! They were delighted to see Pop Pop’s train.

However, the wires that powered the transformer were brittle and the train engine was sluggish. I took the engine and transformer to a model train store in Costa Mesa. The owner was able to clean up and lubricate the engine and put a new cord in the transformer.  My childhood train was running again!

Now, it is the Christmas season again and that means it is time to get out the Lionel Train. When two of our grandchildren were at our house recently, we set up the train in front of our Christmas tree. I let them help me operate it. They enjoyed it and I did too.  My wife took a video to capture the memory of another generation playing with the train together.

I don’t know what childhood memories you have or what Christmas gifts that you may have kept over the years.  But, let me encourage you to look in the closet, the attic or the garage and see if there are some childhood memories like old dolls, toys or trains that you can share with your children or grandchildren this year. They will be glad you did and you will too.

First On The Block Again

I have shared in the past that my wife likes to put up our Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving. We have boxes and boxes of decorations that take hours and hours to put up and display. It is a lot of work, but she really enjoys decorating for the Christmas season.

 

Part of decorating for Christmas includes putting up lights on the outside of our house. This is primarily my job. I use the same colored lights every year. I suppose they look a little dated, but they still work!

I always like to be the first on our block to have Christmas lights on our house.  Sure enough, we were first again this year.  I think that the City of Diamond Bar used to give recognition to the homes that have the best outdoor holiday decorations.  I doubt that we will ever win that prize, but I wonder if we might win a prize for being the first in the neighborhood.

 

However, I must admit, I was a little grumpy this year.  Decorating is a tedious task.  I have to get the lights out of the garage and test each string to see if all the bulbs still work.  Then I have to get out my step ladder and climb up and down numerous times to hang the lights up on the house.  I always forget which string of lights go where.  After all, I only do this once a year.

 

And, I think I was a little grumpy that I was putting the lights up by myself again this year.  The kids are grown and gone, and my wife spends many more hours than I do decorating the inside of our house.   The grandkids are too young to help.  Maybe I had a little too much Turkey at Thanksgiving this year.  I just wasn’t as motivated as I have been in the past.

 

Secretly, I was hoping that it might rain the day after Thanksgiving so I would have an excuse to not work on the outside lights.  But, unfortunately the weather was beautiful with temperatures in the 80’s.  It was inevitable – ready or not it was time to put up the outside Christmas lights.

 

Gradually my attitude and outlook began to change as I put up the lights.  I realized that I shouldn’t be grumpy that I have to put up the lights on the house, but that I should be grateful that I have a house to put lights on!   I’m sure there are a lot of people who would be thrilled to have a house to decorate for Christmas.  I should be grateful not grumpy.

 

By the time I was finished, I was glad I was able to decorate the outside of our house for the holidays.  I was thankful we have a house to decorate!  After the sun set on the day after Thanksgiving, I was pleased to see the Christmas lights on our house again.  They looked pretty good, too!

 

I hope that you enjoy the Christmas season this year.  Enjoy the season with a thankful heart.  Don’t be grumpy about the decorating, shopping or spending.   Be grateful that you have a home to decorate, and friends and family to share it with.  They will be glad you did and you will too!
