Coffee with a Cop Event

By City of Chino

Chino – The Chino Police Department will be holding their next “Coffee with a Cop” event on Tuesday, October 4, 2016. “Coffee with a Cop” has proven to be a very successful community engagement initiative in the City of Chino. Each event held thus far has consistently opened the lines of communication between residents and the police officers who serve them.

Part of the Chino Police Department’s Strategic Vision is Community Outreach and “Coffee with a Cop” is one way for police officers to build relationships with the community members one cup of coffee at a time. The majority of contact law enforcement has with the public occurs during emergencies or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective time for relationship building and some community members may feel officers are unapproachable on the street. “Coffee with a Cop” provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the Chino Police Department through relaxed, one-on-one interactions. There is no agenda, no guest speaker and no power point presentation: just coffee and conversation.

The event will start at 3:30 p.m.  and is expected to end at approximately 5:00 p.m.  It will be held at the Starbucks located at 4013 Grand Avenue #A where coffee will be served.  We look forward to seeing you there!

If you have any questions, please contact Lieutenant Bill Covington at the Chino Police Department 909-334-3092.

Officer Involved Shooting In Chino

Staff Reports

Chino- An officer involved shooting took place on the night of July 23 after a citizen contacted the Chino Police Department to report suspicious activity in the 12100 block of Central Avenue.

At approximately 9:21 p.m. the citizen informed officers that the subject was driving a car and stopped her to ask a question. The citizen did not want to engage in conversation, and reported the man had a gun in his vehicle. The citizen directed the officers to the nearby business area where the man had parked his car.

Once an officer arrived on scene and approached the vehicle, the suspect got out of his car and refused to cooperate with the officer. Other officers were alerted once the suspect started to run on foot.

According to the Chino Police Department, “The suspect ran to an adjacent shopping center and encountered another responding officer. The suspect pointed his gun at the officer and the officer fired upon the suspect.”

The officers conducted CPR until the Chino Valley Fire District arrived at the scene. The male suspect was identified as Bernard Wells III, 31-year-old resident of San Diego. Wells was transported to the Chino Valley Medical Center where he died from his wounds.

Wells was on parole with warrants for his arrest, as well as had an extensive criminal history.

The City of Chino Police Department says, “The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave per department policy. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is conducting the investigation.” The Department also said, “The name of the officer involved will not be released at this time due to the on-going investigation.”

Anyone who has information regarding this incident is asked to contact the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Investigations Unit at (909) 387-3589.

Chino: Did You Know?

CHINO POLICE DEPARTMENT

Chino – Did you know that the Chino Police Department is now offering residents a safe and convenient method to dispose of unwanted medication, further reducing possible misuse? The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – pose potential safety and health hazards.

Bring your unwanted medication to the Chino Police Department at 5450 Walnut Avenue, in Chino. Please note that liquids, needles, medical supplies, food and medication from businesses will not be accepted. For additional information, call (909) 334-3000.
