DIAMOND BAR– Motorists are urged to plan ahead for heavy traffic impacts anticipated as part of construction work taking place the first two weekends in November in Diamond Bar along Grand Avenue at the intersections of Diamond Bar Boulevard and Longview Drive.

The work involves the installation of colored concrete and decorative pavers as part of the final phase of the federally-funded Grand Avenue Beautification Project. The labor-intensive nature of this work and types of materials used will require extended construction hours and continuous traffic lane closures.

Closures at the intersections of Grand Avenue and Diamond Bar Boulevard and Grand Avenue and Longview Drive will begin on Friday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 16 at 6 a.m.   Lanes through these two intersections will be reduced to at least one through lane and one turn lane in each direction at all times during these closure periods.

Because major traffic delays of up to one hour are anticipated, motorists are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes and avoid the construction work areas if possible. Electronic message signs are set up. Traffic notices were mailed to residents of the scheduled lane closures.

As in any work zone, motorists are reminded to use caution at all times when traveling through the area and pay attention to signs, speed limits and traffic control devices.

Diamond Bar – After more than two years of planning and preparation, the Grand Avenue Beautification Project is now underway, as of Wed., May 20.

Thanks to federal funds secured by the City through the Safe Accountable Flexible Efficient Transportation Equity Act, the areas of Grand Avenue and Diamond Bar Boulevard, and Grand Avenue and Longview Drive, will have nearly $2 million of appealing streetscape and pedestrian-centric improvements done over the next few months.

The improvements include enhanced sidewalks for easier pedestrian crossing, improved sidewalks and crosswalks, added post and wood rails, updated traffic poles and bollards, and a 10-foot tall entry monument sign to welcome commuters and residents into the City.

The project goals, according to the Diamond Bar city website, are to highlight the Diamond Bar community identity, create visual points of interest, establish new streetscape standards and guidelines for implementation at major intersections throughout the City, to be a catalyst for business growth, and to distinguish the City’s historical and cultural identity in a modern interpretation that will promote city pride.

David Liu, Diamond Bar’s Director of Public Works and City Engineer, called the project a “major milestone” since it brings about some modern looks to the area that will be aesthetically pleasing to everyone and help bolster the City’s economy.

“I think that’s one of the main reasons we picked the Grand Avenue and Diamond Bar Boulevard section,” Liu said. “The four corners have the four shopping centers and the idea is that we can encourage more people to come and walk around. The idea here is for the residents to visit the stores and shop at Diamond Bar.”

Plans for the Grand Avenue Beautification Project have been around since April 2013, and while some might wonder about the two year waiting time, Mayor Steve Tye was adamant that the project pace was deliberate to ensure quality for all of Diamond Bar.

“It is wonderful to see a plan finally be realized,” Tye said. “Months of planning will finally be carried out; we believe it is better to do it right, than do it fast.”

Tye echoed Liu’s hopes, that the improvements would help the City’s businesses thrive by giving a modern and attractive appearance.

“I think these changes will make a statement that you have arrived in Diamond Bar, the center of our City,” Tye said. “It will attract people to the area, and they can shop while they’re there, which will help the City continue to thrive.”

Construction will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., now through August. Lane closures and turning restrictions will be in effect during construction and delays are imminent during the construction phase.

Diamond Bar – If you frequent the area around Grand Avenue in the City of Diamond Bar, you will start to see some major changes taking place as the City begins to beautify its gateway in grand design.

 

According to the City of Diamond Bar, the Grand Avenue Beautification Project is the result of a federal grant secured through Safe Accountable Flexible Efficient Transportation Equity Act – A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). Grand Avenue will receive a $1 million facelift that will, barring delays, begin later this summer. The federal grant will provide improvements to the intersections at Diamond Bar Boulevard, and Longview Drive, the primary portals into the City, including landscaping, paving, lighting, and public furnishing improvements.

 

Goals of the project will be to stimulate existing commercial centers, and rebrand the City with an aesthetically pleasing environment. Through streetscapes, decorative pavements, median panels and rails, and pedestrian and accent lighting, the redesign will be the cornerstone for development guidelines for the entire City.

 

Earlier this year, the City held an Open House to enable residents and businesses to provide input on design concepts. Artistic renderings portray Diamond Bar’s history amid beautiful colors and patterns. Landscaping designs will provide drought-resistant plants.

 

Along with public improvements of this magnitude come traffic delays. Look for alternative routes as this project gets underway, and look forward to the beautification of Grand Avenue, with completion scheduled for winter 2015.
