Chino Hills Boys Basketball CIF CHAMPIONS!

By Anthony Saude

Chino Hills – For the past five years, the Ball family has ruled Chino Hills basketball. Patriarch LaVar Ball oversaw the rise of eldest son Lonzo from promising point guard to surefire NBA Draft pick. In Lonzo’s last season with the Huskies they won everything, taking the state title and the USA TODAY Super 25 national title. A season later with new coach later, Chino Hills led by brothers LiAngelo and LaMelo Ball, fell just short of another berth in the state title game.

LaMelo Ball left Chino Hills this year for a professional future in Europe. Lavar pulled him from the school and decided to home school him for his senior year. Dennis Latimore the 1st year coach, after being publicly chastised by LaVar and LeMelo as soon as they left the school, had the last laugh. You would have to score that Latimore 1, Ball 0.

The Huskies claimed their second state title in three seasons led by Junior Onyeka Okongwu, the unquestioned leader of this squad after the departure of LaMelo. Onyeka put together a great night with 27 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and five blocked shots.

The last remaining Ball family member at Chino Hills, cousin Andre Ball had 17 points in the victory. Did the team peak at just the right time this year or were they finally able to focus on basketball and not the Ball family traveling circus.

When reporters asked Latimore about losing Onyeka to foul trouble during the game, his answer could have easily been about LaMelo and LaVar, “I think the team showed they are more than one individual player,” Latimore said. “Our big guy went out, but the team stayed united. That’s what teamwork is all about, and they went and got it done.”

Over 1,200 Marijuana Plants Found In Chino Hills

By Anthony Saude

Chino Hills – The Marijuana Enforcement Team (MET) of the Sheriff’s department and Chino Hills Police Department Deputies served a search warrant at a Chino Hills residence for the illegal cultivation of marijuana.

After Deputies from Chino Hills Police Department received a tip from a concerned citizen regarding suspicious activity going on at the residence an investigation was opened. Investigators found evidence of illegal marijuana cultivation.

Investigators served their search warrant and it and were rewarded for their efforts by finding over 1,200 healthy marijuana plants. There was also 25 pounds of processed marijuana confiscated from the scene.

As is the case in most of these crimes, evidence of utility theft was also found. The main power lines that belong to SCE were tampered with in a way that allows the theft of electricity. SCE   Personnel were dispatched to the scene to assist in the investigation and disconnect the electrical service at the residence. Stealing of utilities is illegal and will usually result in a fire at the incident location because of the nun-permitted methods used.

Several investigations have revealed that rental properties being used by tenants to illegally grow marijuana is a crime that is on the rise. Law enforcement officials encourage tenants and the homeowners to check with their local city code enforcement division or the law enforcement to verify if marijuana cultivation is allowed.

Generally speaking, large scale marijuana growing operations are against code in residential areas. The City of Chino Hills prohibits any type of marijuana businesses of any type. You can get more information about Chino Hills Marijuana Ordinance by going to http://www.library.municode.com/ca/chino_hills/code_of_ordinances

At this time no suspects have been identified. Anyone with information in reference to this investigation is urged to contact Sheriff’s Gangs Narcotics Sividion at 909-387-8400.

Upcoming Road Closures for “Every Fifteen Minutes” Program at Ayala HS

Staff Reports

Chino Hills – Ruben S. Ayala High School students will safely experience the devastation caused by a drunk driving accident as part of the “Every 15 Minutes” program on Thursday, March 22nd. Peyton Drive will be closed for part of the morning. The simulated “accident scene” will be set up on Peyton Drive and will feature students portraying crash victims whose vehicle was hit by a drunk driver on Prom night. Emergency response will be conducted as if it were a real accident. From 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. two northbound lanes will be closed leaving just one northbound lane open in front of the school. From 9:30-10:30 a.m. Peyton Drive will be completely closed from Bulldog Way to Boys Republic Drive. At approximately 10:30 a.m. southbound lanes will open, and at 11:00 a.m. northbound lanes will open. Motorists may wish to avoid the area.

“Every 15 Minutes” is a two-day program focusing on high school juniors and seniors, which challenges them to think about drinking, driving, personal safety, the responsibility of making mature decisions and the impact their decisions have on family, friends, their community, and many others.

The two-day program is very dramatic and emotional and purposely so. Teenagers are constantly reminded about the choices they have in front of the involving alcohol and how others in their lives are affected.

Teens know the intellectual statistics they just share the belief it will never happen to them.

The program brings together a broad coalition of interested local agencies with the goal of reducing alcohol-related incidents among youth. The partnering of the California Highway Patrol, local law enforcement, local hospitals, emergency medical responders, schools, businesses, and service clubs validates the importance of working together to ensure a healthy community.

Chino Hills Investigators Recover Thousands Of Stolen Items

Staff Reports

Chino Hills – Mark Williams Ellis, 36, of Chino was arrested on suspicion of grand theft after he was found with six storage units full of items stolen dating back to 2006. (Courtesy San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department)

A vehicle code violation stop in Chino earlier this month led investigators to more than $200,000 in stolen items dating back to thefts committed in 2006, San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials said Thursday at a news conference at the McCoy Equestrian & Recreation Center in Chino Hills.

Mark William Ellis, 36, of Chino was arrested on suspicion of grand theft and vehicle theft, according to booking logs. Ellis was on probation at the time of his arrest on Feb. 4 and is being held without bail at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, records indicate.

Ellis is believed to have stolen the property over the last 12 years at least, said Sgt. Randy Naquin during the conference from inside one of the department’s storage units at the center, which still contained hundreds of items that are awaiting to be returned to their rightful owners. Naquin, however, said he believes the thefts may have started earlier.

In those 12 years, it doesn’t appear Ellis ever sold much, if any, of the property instead hoarding it inside six different storage units in Montclair, according to authorities.

Detectives with the Chino Hills sheriff’s station determined Ellis had taken items from vehicles, home, businesses and schools in Chino Hills, Chino, Anaheim, Newport Beach, Tracy, Walnut, Los Angeles, Fontana, Ontario and Las Vegas, Nevada, officials said. Among the items taken were several firearms, electronics, cellphones, tools and gym equipment.

Chino Hills Crime Meeting

By Anthony Saude

Chino Hills – New California state legislature has changed and now crimes such as first degree burglary and battery with serious bodily injury will no longer be prosecuted as violent felonies. Police officials are saying that crime is exploding all over the state because criminals now know that they won’t be put in jail for those types of crimes. How does a criminal respond to these kinds of changes, they commit more violent crimes of course.

There will be a town hall type meeting held in the Chino Hills Community Center located at 14250 Peyton Drive on March 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. It is encouraged for all citizens to come out to discuss how we can take back the community from the criminals. The new legislature tells you what the law can’t do but the Chino Hills Police Department will be in giving advice on what we can do with some crime prevention techniques and education. They will be talking about burglaries and package theft in Chino Hills and some preventative measures home owners can take to prepare themselves in a responsible manner. They will also discuss how to go about reporting a crime with WeTip.

Another topic of Conversation that the police will discuss at the meeting is the cannabis industry and the new laws. Specifically they will be talking about the cultivation of Marijuana as it relates to the legalization of it recreationally.

District Dedicates More Tech to Teaching

By Anthony Saude

Chino Hills-Technology in the classroom may be teach, inspire, and engage students, but it can’t possibly replace teachers.

That was the point made at the Chino Valley school district’s second annual ChET Day (Chino Education Technology) seminar held on January 27 sponsored for and by district teachers.

Keynote speaker Mary Jo Madda spoke about how education can support the job skills needed for a successful future.

Ms. Madda works for Google in the same education department that provides free computer science education programs for Black, Hispanic and Latino students. Most jobs still require at least an understanding of the hard skills, like math for coding, accounting, finance and of course writing.

It is just as important for career growth that the soft skills are also nurtured, skills like problem solving, communication, collaboration, negotiation, persistence, organization and initiative. Ms. Madda also touched on a new concept in education, developing social capital like social relationships that have economic benefits is also important. Social capital for students could include their teachers, mentors and coaches. The one thing that artificial intelligence can’t do well is connect with the students on a human level.

All three of these skill areas will become increasingly important as robotics replaces old jobs and new jobs emerge that haven’t even been created yet.  STEM is great but we must keep English, music art and foreign language as part of our curriculum.

About 192 teachers and administrators attended the 4 hour CHet Day without pay. Technology trainer in the district, Kim James, says that most teachers want or need technology training but they just don’t have the time to get it. Three breakout sessions for about 60 teachers on computer basics and Excel101 were led by Amanda Arrey, a first grade teacher at Howard Cattle Elementary during the seminar.

With standards to Common Core always changing we have a lot of standards that we have to keep track of with our kids.

During the sessions the teachers were shown how to create folders, how to search and how to feel comfortable finding their way around a computer and excel spreadsheets.

Ms. James at 32 years old regularly trains teachers at her school on technology. She serves on the district’s Techsploration Committee with approximately 30 other administrators and teachers. The group attends conferences and meets monthly to discuss ways to incorporate technology into the classroom. The district employs four technology training specialists full time for the sole purpose of training teachers and to be available to answer any questions that may come up. Another responsibility they have is to hold teaching assemblies for students about internet safety and digital citizenship.

There was several vendors present introducing new technology, most impressive was ViewSonic who had a view board on display that will be placed in two classrooms as part of a pilot program this year. It has a 75 inch mobile screen with an interactive design that is activated by touch like an iPad. It is also equipped with Google voice command recognition as well. Just like its predecessor the “white board”, it can be written on and erased digitally. Bugs, trees, oceans and cells in are in 3D and seem to be alive.  Some of the major sponsors of the seminar like Microsoft donated raffle prizes and Schools Firs Credit Union made sure everybody had breakfast and snacks.
