Pomona Unified Cosmetology Program Expands to IE Schools

POMONA – The Pomona Unified Adult and Career Education’s Barbering and Cosmetology program has expanded partnerships to include eligible high school students from nearby school districts who are interested in taking advantage of the innovative and popular course offering, which launched last year.

The PUSD Adult and Career Education Program is articulating with the San Antonio Regional Occupational Program – which serves students from Bonita Unified and Pomona Unified – and Baldy View Regional Occupational Program – serving students from Chino Valley, Claremont, Upland and Chaffey school districts – to provide the articulated course.

This is the first time that two regional occupation programs have collaborated to meet the needs of high school students in Pomona and surrounding districts.

“This innovative model supports Pomona Unified students who wish to pursue a career after high school, while also extending admission to local high school students who desire the same high-quality level of training but don’t have access to it in their areas,” Board of Education President Andrew Wong said. “This speaks volumes of the caliber programs PUSD offers and how the partnerships we forge are able to benefit all students.”

Under the collaboration, high school students from these districts will have the opportunity to pursue Barbering and Cosmetology State Board licensure requirements, complete the two-year course and become workforce-ready by the end of the senior year.

“This offers students an incredible opportunity to pursue their careers and receive hands-on training while in high school,” said Enrique Medina, director of Career Readiness at PUSD. “We welcome all additional applicants to our program and appreciate Baldy View and San Antonio’s collaborative approach to provide real-world education and mentorship for our students.”

In order to receive a Certificate of Completion in Cosmetology, students must enroll in their junior year of high school and complete the 1,600-hour course over the next two years. Upon graduation from high school, students will begin accepting clients in preparation for the State Board exam.

Client operation hours will run from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. All work will be performed by students in training.

“We are thrilled to expand program enrollment and look forward to its continued success,” Pomona Unified Superintendent Richard Martinez said. “The increasing popularity of this program speaks volumes of the high-quality education and vocational training available to our students. We hope they will take advantage of this opportunity to develop 21st century skills.”

The San Antonio and Baldy View ROP programs are currently accepting applications.

State Leaders Encourage PUSD Seniors To Vote

Pomona – Nearly 300 Pomona Unified high school seniors recently got a lesson on the importance of civic engagement and making their voices heard at the polls from the state’s top public official in charge of encouraging voter participation: California Secretary of State, Alex Padilla.

Padilla, who was joined by state Senator Connie Leyva, discussed with students the importance of being engaged citizens and how the right to vote is the essence of democracy during a Sept. 18 session at the Village Academy High School Conference Center.

“This event presented our students with a powerful opportunity to learn the importance of having an engaged electorate and the role and responsibility every generation has in shaping this country’s future,” Board of Education President Andrew Wong said. “Voting is a powerful tool, and I am grateful that we had two of our state’s top leaders visit one of our campuses to demonstrate its significance.”

The event was organized in conjunction with the District’s Service Learning Program, which supports and encourages students and teachers to engage in community service learning projects.

During the program, Padilla advised students to recognize the importance of politics and its relation to a strong community.

“The greatest potential for registering more eligible voters to vote is engaging young people,” said Padilla, who was sworn in as Secretary of State in January, and has committed to modernizing the office, increasing voter registration and participation, and strengthening voting rights. “There is no substitute for personally inviting someone to participate in the voting process.”

Prior to addressing the full assembly, Padilla and Leyva met separately with Associated Student Body leaders and challenged them to reach out to their peers to become more aware of the civic benefits of voter registration and participation.

One student ready to accept the challenge is Fremont Academy ASB President, Elena Guzman, who also serves as the student liaison on the Pomona Unified Board of Education.

“Both my parents are Hispanic and do not vote. I grew up not wanting to vote,” Guzman said. “My brothers convinced me voting will help my future as well as the future of my peers and friends.”

Leyva, whose district includes Pomona, encouraged students to be active in the political process and to practice due diligence when assessing candidates and elected officials.

“Whom you vote for matters,” said Leyva, who is serving her first term in the State Senate. “The worst thing you can do is nothing.”

Pomona Unified’s Service Learning Program, which helped organize the event, is an instructional strategy in which community service opportunities are integrated into the curriculum, with the goal of enhancing the core curriculum and helping students meet academic standards and develop a sense of civic responsibility.

At the event, eligible students also got the chance to register to vote.

“Civic engagement is a key component to a complete and well-rounded education and the Service Learning Program is one tool we use to encourage our students to be active and productive members of our community,” Superintendent Richard Martinez said. “We care about involving all of our communities, especially our young adults, in the process of making policy.”

Pomona – To welcome in the new school year, the Pomona Unified School District is introducing new administrators – including a new principal at Lorbeer Middle School ­– and celebrating promotions of staff members who will helm their respective departments and carry on PUSD’s tradition of success.

“The passion these educators have will ensure that our students are academically challenged through engaging curriculum and will gain the skills needed for post-secondary success,” Board of Education President Andrew Wong said. “Congratulations to our staff members on their new roles. I wish them all the best.”

Leading the Longhorns as principal of Lorbeer Middle School is 20-year educator and former Diamond Ranch High School Assistant Principal, Angelique Butler. She replaces longtime principal Krystana Walks-Harper, a 26-year educator who is now the District’s Associate Director of Pupil and Community Services.

Walks-Harper graduated from Garey High School and holds a bachelor’s in psychology from the University of Maryland, a master’s in education from Claremont Graduate University (CGU) and an administrative credential from Cal State San Bernardino. She is a doctoral candidate in education at CGU and oversees a variety of services at PUSD, including peer resources, National Academy Foundation schools, and parent support and involvement programs.

“I am proud to follow in Mrs. Walks-Harper’s footsteps and am looking forward to building on the tradition of providing a rigorous and engaging curriculum, as well as honoring the history of strengths and successes of Lorbeer,” Butler said. “I firmly believe in the importance of developing a solid, collaborative partnership with our parents, so that we may meet all the needs of our developing students and offer them the highest quality of education.”

Butler, a graduate of Pomona High School, holds master’s degrees in economics and school counseling. She began her service with the District as a 6th Grade teacher at Emerson Middle School before moving to Diamond Ranch High School.

Other new appointments include:

Tamatha Williams, Assistant Principal at Diamond Ranch High School – In the District since 1995, Williams has served as a teacher, teacher specialist and academic coach. She holds a bachelor’s in behavioral science from Cal Poly Pomona, a master’s in education from Claremont Graduate School and a doctorate in education from Cal Poly Pomona.

Anthony Rice, Assistant Principal at Garey High School – The former dean of students at Pomona High School, Rice is leading as assistant principal at his alma mater. He joined the District in 1999 as a secondary teacher, and is a former football coach with a master’s in Education.

Dr. Bryan Stoops, Dean of students at Garey High School – Stoops is a new hire from the Chino Valley Unified School District and holds a bachelor’s in drama from UCLA, a master’s in educational multimedia and a doctorate of education in organizational leadership from the University of La Verne.

Behrad Hosseinzadeh, Dean of students at Pomona High School – New to Pomona Unified, Hosseinzadeh comes from the Glendale Unified School District. He holds a bachelor’s in criminal justice, a master’s in history from Cal State Fullerton, and a master’s in educational leadership and administration from Concordia University.

Jennifer Wagner, Director of Educational Technology – With the District since 1995, Wagner previously served as program administrator of Educational Services/Instructional Technology, bolstering technology programs, increasing tech resources for students and making tech devices more accessible.

Zoila Savaglio, Director of State and Federal Programs – Savaglio will oversee the office that ensures that state and federal programs are aligned to district initiatives, with a focus on increasing student achievement. She will coordinate such programs as Title 1, Gifted and Talented Education, English Language Learner program, Migrant Education program and the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) process. She has been with the District since 1990.

Maryann Gonzalez, Coordinator of Child Development – Previously the child development program assistant, Gonzalez has been with the District since 1991 and holds a master’s degree in human development.

Vicki Vazquez, Program Assistant of Child Development – Working at such locations as Long Beach Community College and Disney’ Children Center, Vazquez holds a bachelor’s degree in human development and a master’s degree in human development leadership.

“I am confident that each of these amazing leaders and their expertise will continue to positively shape our students through high-quality instruction,” Superintendent Richard Martinez said. “The Pomona Unified family welcomes all of these educators and we look forward to a successful 2015-16 school year.”

Pomona – On Fri., Sept. 4, Garey High School hosted a special program highlighting one of their college programs.

According to the Pomona Unified School District, Garey High Class of 2015 graduate, Juan Ledesma, shared his inspiring story of how Bright Prospect helped him realize his dream of pursuing a degree in political science at UCLA.

Now in its 13th year, Bright Prospect empowers high potential, low-income students to gain admission to, succeed in and graduate from four-year colleges and universities by providing a comprehensive support system that begins in high school and continues throughout college, resulting in a 91 percent college graduation rate.

Every student receives college readiness programming, one-on-one coaching, application assistance, and ongoing mentoring from peers and professionals from 10th Grade through college graduation. The program serves students ages 14 to 26, from all seven high schools in Pomona Unified, as well as high schools in the Chaffey Joint Union High School District. The program currently serves more than 1,200 Pomona Unified students.

In addition, the ceremony included a $7,500 donation to the college-readiness program from Los Angeles County Supervisor, Hilda Solis, and speeches from Garey High Principal, Stacey Wilkins and PUSD Superintendent, Richard Martinez.

Pomona: Giveaway Provides 1,800 Backpacks To Students

Pomona – Hundreds of Pomona Unified children received complimentary backpacks and school supplies at District Family Support and Resource Center’s annual Backpack and School Supply Giveaway on Aug. 5, a week before the start of the school on Aug. 12.

Now celebrating its fourth year, the event provided Pomona Unified families with more than 1,800 free backpacks filled with age-appropriate school materials, including books, pencils, folders and binders.

“With the start of school just around the corner, it is great to see our kids enthusiastic about getting their new backpacks and school supplies and I want to thank the Family Support and Resource Center for bringing this program to them,” said Board President Andrew Wong. “Through this event, the District is helping to ensure our students are able to focus on learning and successfully tackling the new school year.”

The Family Support and Resource Center supports Pomona Unified students and families with a variety of services and referrals that address mental health, alcohol and substance abuse, health care and housing, as well as emergency basic support referrals and assistance for clothing, food, utilities, furniture/household items or school items.

Originally organized to assist the District’s homeless student population, the backpack giveaway event has become a vital resource for Pomona Unified families and students who need school supplies and books for the new school year.

The items were donated by several community groups, including Feed the Children, Christ’s Church of the Valley in San Dimas and School on Wheels, which provides tutoring, school supplies and other educational assistance to children in Southern California.

Pomona: PUSD Launches Immersion Program

English-Mandarin coming to Pantera Elementary

Pomona – One class of Pantera Elementary kindergarteners will learn how to read, write and communicate effectively in both English and Mandarin through the introduction of the Pomona Unified School District’s latest dual-language immersion program.

Launched on Aug. 12, the first day of school for Pomona Unified students, the new program will provide Mandarin and English language instruction to 25 kindergarten students, ensuring they receive an exciting and challenging educational opportunity where they will gain the bilingual skills needed to succeed in a 21st century world.

The inaugural class at Pantera (located at 801 Pantera Drive in Diamond Bar) is already full, but Pomona Unified is accepting sign-ups for the 2016-17 academic year.

“Pomona Unified is incorporating this new English-Mandarin dual-immersion program to provide our students the tools they need to succeed in a globally competitive and multicultural market, all while improving their literacy skills and engaging in the District’s rigorous core curriculum,” Board of Education President Andrew Wong said.

The program follows a 50:50 model, where 50 percent of instruction will occur in the target language of Mandarin and 50 percent of instruction will be in English, including 30 minutes of daily English language development dedicated to English learners. The class is comprised of native English speakers and native Mandarin speakers, enabling both sets of students to interact and learn new vocabulary skills.

“This program presents our students with a unique opportunity to speak multiple languages both inside and beyond the walls of a traditional classroom,” said Pantera Elementary School Principal Todd Riffell. “Students’ education will be enhanced because of the cultural awareness, acceptance and rich language that is shared and exchanged between students enrolled in these classrooms.”

As students advance in the program, they will demonstrate proficiency in both languages, navigating complex material in English and Mandarin. Students enrolled in this program also have the chance to earn a State Seal of Biliteracy on their high school diplomas.

As part of the District’s 2015-18 Local Control and Accountability Plan, Pomona Unified is also expanding its English-Spanish language immersion program – which just completed its first year at Westmont Elementary – to Montvue Elementary School this fall.

“Pomona’s dual-language program embraces and acknowledges the rich cultural diversity of our community,” Superintendent Richard Martinez said. “By the time students reach the 6th Grade, they will have spent seven academic years immersed in bilingual, bicultural and biliterate studies, which will prove invaluable as they continue their education.”

Pomona – Nearly 100 band members from Pomona Unified’s high schools and middle schools were surprised with $45,000 in musical instruments – from oboes and saxophones to string basses and chrome chimes.  The students will be able to use their new instruments during their impressive performances, including their next big showcase at Pomona Day at the Los Angeles County Fair at Fairplex in September.

Thanks to a partnership between entertainment company, Live Nation, and Fairplex, more than 20 instruments were donated to band students at Diamond Ranch, Pomona, Garey and Ganesha high schools; and Fremont Academy, Lorbeer, Emerson and Simons middle schools, during a surprise ceremony on July 30 at Diamond Ranch High School.

“We are grateful to these two great partners for providing our students with this much-needed equipment, enabling us to bolster our music and arts programs and inspire students to pursue their creative talents,” said Board of Education President Andrew Wong. “We look forward to hearing the wonderful music they’ll be playing with these new instruments.”

The donation was made to underscore the importance of preserving music programs in public schools, according to Dale Coleman, a Pomona High School alum and Vice President of Business Growth and Development at Fairplex, who coordinated the donation.

Donated instruments include violins, bell stands, standard basses, clarinets and trombones.

“Music is a passion of these students and it such an important fabric of society and our culture,” said PUSD Superintendent Richard Martinez. “We are honored to be the recipients of this generous donation of instruments, many of which are unique and expensive, but essential for our band programs to continue growing and thriving.”

Pomona: PUSD’s Camp Imagination Inspires

Pomona3rd Grader Walter Adling’s cardboard robot stands over two feet tall, with a long, long neck, a see-through brain and a transparent stomach filled with a rainbow of popsicle sticks and yarn.

“Its insides are made of infinite cherries,” Walter said.

Walter’s robot is one of dozens of toys created by students this summer at Pomona Unified School District’s first-ever Camp Imagination, a unique program in which 100 incoming 3rd Graders from Diamond Point, Roosevelt and Washington elementary schools were challenged to let their imaginations reshape recycled materials.

“Students used their own creative instincts to find solutions to real-world problems, and though they were guided along the way, they were engaged in college-level work that involved research, innovation and collaboration to make their projects come to fruition,” Board President Andrew Wong said.  “I’m proud of all of our students, teachers and staff members who helped make this inventive pilot program a success.”

The literacy intervention program, which ran from June 15 to July 2, helped struggling readers to become engaged learners by promoting creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving.

It was inspired by the short film, “Caine’s Arcade,” which tells the story of a 9-year old East Los Angeles boy who, over his summer vacation, built an elaborate arcade out of cardboard and recycled materials in his father’s used auto parts store.

At Pomona Unified, students worked in small groups to strengthen their literacy skills, using such programs as Accelerated Reader, exploring scientific concepts and incorporating iPad technology for some of the projects, which ranged from three-dimensional Minecraft to life-sized playhouses.

“Programs that incorporate STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and make learning fun are critical to ensuring students are inspired to pursue these concepts as they move forward in their academic careers,” said Diamond Point teacher, Jorge Sanchez, who helped develop the curriculum along with the schools’ principals and teachers.

As part of the project, students also wrote business plans, created their own poems and songs, and made iMovies documenting their experiences.

“A lot of students were having so much fun that they didn’t realize they were learning reading, writing, collaborating, thinking critically and journaling,” said Janice Lim, a board member of the Pomona Unified Partners in Learning (PUPIL) Foundation, which helped fund the program and provided Camp Imagination T-shirts to students.

The support of the foundation – which promotes state-of-the-art student learning opportunities in STEM – has played an important role in increasing programs like Camp Imagination at Pomona Unified.

“The camps encourage hands-on exploration and enable our students to develop critical thinking skills, resourcefulness, empathy, perseverance, teamwork and other 21st-century skills” said Superintendent Richard Martinez. “We hope to continue to explore STEM design concepts and academic rigor through this project-based format, and I want to thank PUPIL for their support in our efforts.”

Pomona Students Sample College Life

More than 60 college-hopeful high school students, including 21 from the Pomona Unified School District, participated in the 10th Annual REACH Business Summer Camp, hosted June 8-28 by the University of La Verne.

Pomona – 21 Pomona Unified School District students spent three weeks getting a glimpse of college life during the University of La Verne’s annual REACH Summer Business Camp, where they experienced a stimulating and enriching academic environment as they explored the world of business.

As a way to help students “Reach” their potential, the camp – which is celebrating its 10th anniversary – provides high school juniors from underserved communities with an introduction to the business field. Nearly 100 percent of students who attend the program go on to pursue a college degree.

“Working with the REACH program is just one of the ways Pomona Unified encourages students to pursue higher education,” Board President Andrew Wong said. “They learn that attending a university or college is attainable and feasible for them, and by getting an idea of what the academic standards are like, they are able to better prepare themselves for college.”

The University of La Verne’s College of Business and Public Management hosted the annual camp
June 8-28 for more than 60 college-hopeful students who took classes in accounting and finance, business ethics, economics, management and organization, marketing and website development.

Students also received valuable insight from local business owners who explained the key role leadership plays in entrepreneurship. They were also challenged to come up with their own ideas for a business and complete a thorough business plan.

“It was an amazing opportunity and unforgettable time for all of the students who gained confidence knowing that they can attend college,” said Monique Cardenas, a business teacher at Garey and Village Academy high schools, who assisted La Verne professors with lesson plans and helped students with their research projects.

“Students gained a unique understanding of the role of business in the economy and the importance of obtaining a post-secondary education,” Cardenas said. “It was exciting to see the sparkle in their eyes.”

The camp is held at no cost to students, who live in campus dorms, eat in dining halls and sit in on classroom lectures for the duration of the program. Those who complete the camp earn five elective credits through the Pomona Unified Regional Occupation Program and one unit from the University of La Verne.

“Our students have taken a significant step toward their college degrees and now have a better understanding of the business field thanks to the REACH Summer Business Camp,” Superintendent Richard Martinez said. “I want to thank the University of La Verne and our other community partners for encouraging our students to explore their career aspirations and giving them the hands-on opportunity to do so.”

Pomona: PUSD To Expand Language Programs

Pomona – Pomona Unified School District plans to expand dual-language immersion programs and full-day kindergarten programs, and boost spending for secondary athletics, online Advanced Placement courses and technology support as part of its 2015-18 Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).

The plan – a requirement of the state’s school funding system – guides District efforts in improving student learning, with particular emphasis on foster youth, English learners and students who are socio-economically disadvantaged. It identifies goals for each year, strategies to achieve those goals and funding sources.

“During the course of our outreach efforts, we have found that the priorities of our parents, community members and stakeholders include rigorous academics and programs to ensure all students – including our foster youth, English learners and socio-economically disadvantaged – are college- and career-ready by the time they graduate high school,” said Board President Andrew Wong. “This plan builds on our District’s successful programs and creates new avenues for student support.”

The 2015-18 plan pledges to continue programs that have shown success in improving graduation rates and reducing absenteeism, dropout and expulsion rates, including professional development, the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) college preparation program, reducing student-teacher ratios in elementary and middle school math and English Language Development sections, improving access to technology and broadening the course of study.

The District will expand its dual-language immersion offerings to include an English-Spanish program at Montvue Elementary School and an English-Mandarin program at Pantera Elementary School. Full-day kindergarten will be added at 11 additional schools. All elementary schools will now have the program.

The District will also bring new programs forward, including a literacy focus program and extra support for arts and music programs. Schools will add learning support by way of more nurses, counselors, school site specialists and math coaches for elementary and high schools. Funding for technology devices and additional computer technicians will also be increased to boost student and adult learning.

Pomona Unified developed the LCAP after analyzing a District survey that drew more than 3,000 stakeholder comments, reviewing data on student performance and consulting parent, faculty, staff and student groups, including the Associated Pomona Teachers Union and California School Employees Association during more than 20 meetings between January and June.

Stakeholders asked for continued safe and clean schools, increased staff and a broader range of coursework, technology and health services. Other avenues the District expects to explore in the future include more science labs, school modernization projects and disaster preparedness.

Pomona: PUSD Awarded $75,000 State Grant

Expansion of After-School Learning Program

Pomona – Three Pomona Unified School District schools are among 67 schools in the state selected to share $4.6 million in state grants aimed at expanding before- and after-school programs to give students safe places to go outside of school hours, while also providing them opportunities to participate in enrichment activities.

The State Department of Education selected Barfield Elementary, Harrison Elementary and Lexington Elementary to receive $7,310, $37,060 and $31,277, respectively, to expand The Learning Connection (TLC), Pomona Unified’s after-school tutoring and homework assistance program.

“We are thankful that three of our schools will be able to use these grants to not only continue strengthening the valuable TLC program, but also provide our working parents and students, many of whom are low-income, academic assistance in a safe environment,” PUSD Board President Andrew Wong said. “I also want to thank our TLC instructors for serving as role models and inspiring students to achieve their maximum potential.”

The grants are part of the state’s After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program, which is known as The Learning Connection at PUSD. There, students can receive homework support, academic enrichment in the core subjects of literacy, math and science and additional enrichment that includes healthy living activities, exploration of the visual and performing arts, technology, engineering, service learning and leadership development.

TLC, offered at several school sites throughout the District, is staffed by credentialed intervention teachers who supervise enrichment activities that reinforce skills learned during the regular school day and act to build self-esteem and social skills.

“This is a true community effort, allowing our children access to a secure learning environment where they can both thrive academically and enjoy time with their friends after school,” said Superintendent Richard Martinez. “We are extremely grateful to our Learning Connection staff and to the California Department of Education for their generous funding to support student achievement.”

The program runs from the end of the school day until 6 p.m.

Pomona – Academic achievement was the prevailing theme as 1,500 Pomona Unified School District graduates participated in commencement exercises during the first week of June. Students in the Class of 2015 received diplomas and turned their tassels from right to left, many of them looking forward to the next step of their educational careers.

The PUSD graduates will be headed to an impressive number of leading universities, among them UCLA, USC, UC Davis, UC Irvine UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, Cal Poly Pomona, Pitzer College and Vassar College. Jeremy Tran, the Valedictorian for Diamond Ranch High School, earned the District’s top grade point average, at 4.944. Tran will attend UC Berkeley.

“The rewards of a rich and diverse education will resonate emphatically throughout a graduate’s life,” said Board of Education President Andrew Wong. “Our mission is to provide for our students the foundations of accomplishment and to develop the skill sets necessary to meet the challenges in the 21st century. We applaud the Class of 2015 and wish them the best of luck.”

grads; Ganesha High with 250 grads; Village Academy with 95 grads; Fremont Academy with 68 grads and Palomares Academy with 28 grads. Among PUSD’s alternative education campuses, Park West High graduated 43 students and the School of Extended Education Options and the Pomona Alternative School combined to graduate 39.

The District has also seen a steady rise in graduation rates since 2010, the year that the California Department of Education adjusted its reporting to track students over all four years. In 2010, the grad rate was 71.8 percent; today it is well over 83 percent, topping the state average of 80.8 percent and the Los Angeles County average of 78 percent.

“These tremendous results demonstrate that we are succeeding in our mission to see our students earn their high school diplomas and leave our schools with the tools and skills they need to excel in the next steps of their lives,” Superintendent Richard Martinez said. “Helping our students reach their goals takes the dedication of our entire Pomona Unified family, including our staff, our parents and our community. I wish our Class of 2015 graduates continued success and we cannot wait to see all they achieve in the future.”

 

Diamond Ranch Student Wins Prestigious Scholarship

Pomona – Diamond Ranch High School senior, Brendan Chin, is one of 1,000 students from across the nation selected to receive the Gates Millennium Scholarship, providing him with a good-through-graduation scholarship to any college or university of his choice.

The Pomona Unified student was chosen from among tens of thousands of applicants for the Millennium Scholar Program, established in 1999 through a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Winners of the scholarship were officially announced on May 1.

“It is with great pride and joy to announce that one of our stellar students has been selected to receive this award and make his dreams of pursuing higher education a reality,” said Board of Education President, Andrew Wong. “This speaks volumes of the caliber of students Pomona Unified produces and the academic and social support our schools provide to prepare them for the 21st century workplace.”

Chin will use the scholarship to pursue a degree in computer science at UC San Diego.

“This award is a huge honor and I am so grateful to have gotten this opportunity,” Chin said. “I want to thank Diamond Ranch, my teachers and peers for supporting me throughout this journey. I hope to make my alma mater proud.”

The Millennium Scholarship program helps high-performing students attain their dream of attending four-year universities and colleges through graduate school. Each year, it enables 5,000 students to attend and graduate from 800 of the most selective private and public schools in the country, including Ivy League colleges, flagship state universities, United Negro College Fund member institutions and other minority-serving universities, according to UNCF.

“This is yet another example that our young people of Pomona Unified can compete with the best of the best,” Superintendent Richard Martinez said. “This scholarship will provide Brendan, who has done phenomenal work at Diamond Ranch, the opportunity to excel in his chosen field and become a model of our next generation of leaders.”

Gold Ribbons For Seven PUSD Schools

Award honors outstanding, innovative schools throughout California

Pomona – On May 5, Seven Pomona Unified schools were named California Gold Ribbon Schools, the state’s highest award recognizing academic excellence and innovation.

Receiving the awards were Lorbeer Middle, Emerson Middle, Ganesha High, Garey High, Palomares Academy of Health Sciences, Pomona High and Simons Middle schools.

“There are so many exemplary programs our Pomona Unified schools offer, and this award demonstrates the amazing work our staff is doing to strengthen and improve them for the benefit of all our students,” said Board of Education President Andrew Wong.

The Gold Ribbon Award was created to honor schools in place of the California Distinguished Schools program, which is on hiatus while the state creates new assessment and accountability systems and revises how it calculates its Academic Performance Index, a key factor in the old award system.

The individual Pomona Unified campuses were recognized for best practices that can be replicated at other school sites, including boosting parent and community involvement, increasing STEM programs such as robotics, closing the achievement gap and reducing absenteeism through programs such as Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and other engaging electives.

“I’m so proud of our teachers, administrators and staff for their collaborative efforts in providing rigorous educational opportunities to our students and for improving the educational environments for the students to thrive in,” said PUSD Superintendent Richard Martinez. “These Gold Ribbon awards are a true testament to Pomona Unified families and Pomona Unified team working together to help our students succeed.”

PUSD Stabbing

Pomona – On Tues., Mar. 24, at approximately 12:25 p.m., Pomona Police Officers responded to the Pomona Unified School District Office regarding a stabbing.

The victim, Amy Blevins, 39, of Pomona, was walking to her vehicle when she met up with the suspect, and exchanged pleasantries.  According to the Pomona Police Department, the suspect then stabbed Blevins and fled the scene.  Offers were unable to locate him at that time.

Blevins was transported to a local hospital for the treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Subsequently, the suspect – Jonathan Serrano, 22, of Pomona, was located and arrested.  At his arraignment on Thurs. Apr. 2, Serrano pled guilty for assault with a deadly weapon.  He was sentenced to two years in State prison.

Pomona – Two Pomona Unified schools have funded a memorial scholarship and constructed high-tech science labs for elementary and high school students – including space for a robotics program – thanks to a $100,000 grant aimed at strengthening science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs.

La Verne Science and Technology Charter School and Palomares Academy of Health Sciences each received a $50,000 endowment from the Todd Family Foundation to establish science and technology facilities and programs. The donations were made in memory of Dr. Shane Todd, a scientist and Pomona Unified alumnus, who died in 2012.

“These new science facilities are generating sparks of creativity in young minds,” Pomona Unified School District Board of Education President, Andrew Wong, said. “Thanks to the Todd family’s generosity, we are reinforcing our commitment to educate students in cutting-edge and in-demand fields.”

La Verne Science and Technology, a charter school focused on STEM programs, used the funding to build a modern science lab, which is open after school for its robotics programs. The school will continue to expand the use of this new science lab. Plans are in the works to establish a computer coding program.

The facility, dedicated as the “Dr. Shane Todd Science Lab,” is a teacher- and student-friendly space that features digital microscopes, computers for research, a teacher demonstration area, student work stations that foster collaboration and the latest in interactive science notebooks.

“These leading-edge learning tools are inspiring our students to explore science in ways that weren’t possible before,” La Verne Science and Technology Principal Dolores Lobaina said.  “Through a plethora of new, hands-on activities, our students are learning how to tackle the hard questions.”

Palomares Academy of Health Sciences divided its share of the donation among several science-based projects, including a robotics program in its new Dr. Shane Todd Science Center and an outdoor atrium that encourages students to explore earth sciences.

In honor of Todd – described as a Renaissance Man – Palomares also established a scholarship program in which students submitted designs for a Renaissance Man mural. A reveal of the mural and the first, second and third place winners of the scholarship will be named in May.

“The spirit and inspiration that Dr. Todd has brought to the Palomares Academy is part of his legacy,” Palomares Principal, Camille Ramos-Beal, said. “We are grateful to the Todd family for recognizing Palomares Academy as a beneficiary.”

Superintendent Richard Martinez reinforced the critical role STEM courses serve to equip students for the quickly evolving job market.

“Preparing our students for careers in STEM is a top priority for our District,” Martinez said. “This donation opens up a world of possibilities for discovery and innovation and is preparing our students to become the next generation of leaders.”

 

 

Pomona Unified School District Celebrates New Dental Health Center

Pomona – The Palomares Academy of Health Sciences held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Jan. 9 to celebrate the opening of a new school-based oral health center run in partnership with the Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) College of Dental Medicine.  This is the fourth school-based comprehensive dental clinic in PUSD.

PUSD has worked in partnership with local universities, including WesternU, to offer students unique educational experiences and services. Since fall 2013, WesternU, in partnership with PUSD, began providing free and low-cost oral health services – including free dental exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants – to uninsured and underserved children ages 17 and younger. While meeting the needs of these children, the program also serves as a teaching laboratory for third- and fourth-year dental students, who perform all procedures under the supervision of licensed dentists.

Palomares is the opening of the fourth dental clinic at PUSD, with others located at the Mendoza Center, The Village @ Indian Hill and Alcott Elementary School.

Pomona Unified School District Forges Alliance With 7-Eleven

Pomona – In its continued efforts to bolster services provided to students and their families through community collaborations, the Pomona Unified School District is forging a new partnership with 7-Eleven, who donated $7,011 during a check presentation ceremony on Dec. 11 at their Murchison Avenue store. The funds will support the District’s Mental Health Program.

All Pomona 7-Eleven franchisee owners – who will be regular contributors to the District’s charitable foundation, PUPIL; corporate representatives; and Cortez Elementary Math and Science Magnet School students, attended the festive event celebrating the gift and new community alliance.

The international convenience chain store’s donation will go toward the District’s Family Support & Resource Center, which provides mental health services and support to families who want to improve the quality of their lives and homes.

The Family Support & Resource Center supports PUSD students and families with a variety of services that address mental health, alcohol and substance abuse, domestic violence, health care and housing assistance. The center also provides emergency basic support referrals and assistance for clothing, food, utilities and school items. The Pomona Unified Partners in Learning (PUPIL) Foundation was created to raise needed funds to ensure the continued success of all PUSD students.

 

 

 

Pomona: Superintendent Martinez Selected For Summit At White House

Pomona – Richard Martinez, Superintendent of the Pomona Unified School District (PUSD), was selected by the U.S. Department of Education as one of 100 top school leaders from across America to participate in the first-ever National Connected Superintendents Summit, held on Wed., Nov. 19, at the White House.

Martinez is among exemplary local school chiefs who will be recognized for their leadership in helping transition their districts to digital learning. This unique conference will bring together officials throughout America to share promising approaches to using technology in classrooms.

“It is a tremendous honor and privilege to be invited to the White House to represent the Pomona Unified community and showcase the innovative ways our talented teachers are revolutionizing digital learning and education in the classroom,” said Martinez. “We are excited to be recognized for being trailblazers in the world of digital education and are proud to be a model of success that other schools can replicate.”

PUSD recently won two Golden Bell Awards from the California School Boards Association for its innovative use of technology in Early Childhood Education, and educational excellence at the Palomares Academy of Health Sciences. The District offers its students career pathways in computer science in partnership with Harvey Mudd College and Microsoft Corp., and courses in robotics through Cal Poly Pomona. Village Academy High School offers career courses in Film Studies and Computer Science/Information Technology.

Every PUSD classroom has Internet access District-wide.  32 Common Core/SBAC assessment-ready labs are being completed, and campus-wide Wi-Fi is expanding at all sites across the District. Mobile devices such as iPads, Chromebooks and laptops are available in PUSD’s K-12 schools, bringing educational technology into the classroom. Through community partnerships with EveryoneOn and Southeast Community Development Corp., PUSD is bridging the digital divide for District families.

“School districts across the country are helping teachers harness the power of technology to create personal learning environments for all students,” said U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. “We want to make sure every child – whether he or she is in the inner-city, in a rural community or on a Native American reservation – has access to knowledge and the chance to learn 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

The White House summit will be followed by a series of 12 to 15 regional summits that will focus on the digital progress made possible by local school districts.  The events will also include the unveiling of digital tools that facilitate incorporation of technology into short-term and long-range education planning.

To help spotlight the value of technology in schools, the Education Department is sponsoring a Future Ready Initiative aimed at showcasing outstanding school leadership and strategies.

“The Future Ready Initiative highlights the critical role of district leaders in setting a vision and creating the environment where educators and students access the tools, content, and expertise necessary for thriving in a connected world,” said Richard Culatta, Director of the Department’s Office of Educational Technology.

Future Ready superintendents demonstrate effective use of technology in some of the following ways:

 

  • Fostering and leading a culture of collaboration and digital citizenship;
  • Transitioning schools and families to high-speed connectivity;
  • Empowering educators with professional learning opportunities;
  • Accelerating progress toward universal access to quality devices;
  • Providing access to quality digital content;
  • Creating access, equity, and excellence – particularly in rural, remote, and low-income districts;
  • Offering digital tools to students and families to help them prepare for success in college;
  • Sharing best practices and mentoring other districts in the transition to digital learning.

 

“Technology has the potential to transform education in America, allowing students to learn more, to do so at their own pace, and to develop the knowledge and skills employers demand,” Culatta said. “And yet, fewer than 30 percent of classrooms have the broadband Internet to support today’s education technology needs.”

In June 2013, President Obama announced the ConnectED Initiative, starting with a goal of connecting 99 percent of students to next-generation connectivity within five years. Model schools and districts across the country are using technology to create personalized learning environments; technology will play an increasingly crucial role in the future.
