Walnut – Two Walnut High School seniors, Serena Hou and Patricia Wong, signed letters of intent on Nov. 12 to play golf in college. Their families, teammates, and coach were on hand for the lunchtime ceremony.“Congratulations to both of you – we’re proud and excited,” said Principal Jeff Jordan.

“I’m very excited,” said Hou, who will play at Southern Illinois University. “I’ve been working so hard all my life to reach this goal and my parents have been very supportive. And now we’re here!”

Wong will play at Pepperdine University next year.

“My hand shook a little during the signing, but it’s a wonderful day,” the 17-year old Wong exclaimed. “I feel so blessed for this crazy opportunity!”

Pepperdine was also Wong’s first campus visit.

“It went so well, I said ‘this is my last visit – I want to go here!’” said Wong.

Wong said she couldn’t have achieved the dream without the support of her family.

The Mustang Girls’ Golf Team with Coach Cecil Wood had a perfect 28-0 regular season. The team won the CIF Championship, CIF Southern Section championship, and competed in the state semifinals, explained Athletic Director, Jerry Person.

“Good luck in college!” Person said.

Santa Ana – On Halloween evening, when most youngsters look forward to costumes, candy and fun, real terror struck when three 13-year old girls were killed crossing the street while trick-or-treating.

On Fri., Oct. 31, at about 6:45 p.m. in the 1400 block of E. Fairhaven Avenue, twins Lexi and Lexandra Perez, and their friend, Andrea Gonzales, were walking in a crosswalk when a Honda CRV struck and killed them, and fled the scene.

Captain Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department stated, “Witnesses say the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. I didn’t see any skid marks, so it doesn’t appear they slowed down whatsoever. They left these three young women laying in the street, and left without calling, without stopping, without rendering aid. It’s hard to even fathom doing that.”

It is reported that a witness followed the Honda to a strip mall not far from the crime scene and watched a male driver and passengers once again flee the scene.

On Sun., Nov. 2 the Santa Ana Police Department issued a news release stating that multiple arrests had been made in connection to these hit and run deaths. Allegedly at fault, is Jaquinn Ramone Bell, 31, who was found at a Motel 6 in the City of Stanton. Bell – who reportedly has a criminal history dating back to 2009 – was charged with vehicular manslaughter, driving on a suspended license, and fleeing the scene of a crime. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Dec. 16, and faces a maximum sentence of 17 years if convicted.

It is reported that Bell had two children with him when he struck the girls in the crosswalk, and then abandoned his vehicle. Other members of Bell’s family were also arrested and then released on Nov. 2.

Orange County: Newport Beach Man Sentenced For $16 Million Fraud

STAFF REPORTS

Santa Ana – On Fri., Oct. 17, Dinesh Valjeebhai Shah, 65, of Newport Beach, was sentenced to seven years in prison for conspiring to commit real estate fraud, including 13 felony counts of forgery, five counts of conspiracy to commit a crime, identity theft, and grand theft.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s office, Shah and family members, recruited friends and family to become pretend, or “straw buyers,” by forging loan applications with false information in order to procure loans on a number of properties in Orange County, to the tune of more than $16 million.

Through the falsification of deeds and loan documents from 2006 to 2009, funding for 15 properties – all approved by Washington Mutual Bank – was obtained, with those straw buyers never planning on controlling the properties.

The Shah’s businesses, New Age Realty, First Property Escrow, City First Realty, and Associates Investments Group, located in Tustin, came under scrutiny following a complaint by a realtor. Three other family members involved in these crimes were previously convicted and sentenced.

Walnut’s Festival Was “Rooted In Fun”

BY RAYMOND MENDOZA

walnut-festival-2014Walnut – Residents once again came out in droves on Sat., Oct. 11, for the annual Walnut Family Festival – the City’s largest event with games, food and entertainment.

This year’s event theme was, “Rooted in Fun,” marking the City’s declaration as “Tree City U.S.A,” for being environmentally conscience.

As always, the day was started with an 8 a.m. Pancake Breakfast sponsored by the Lions Club, and followed by the parade from Lemon Avenue to Suzanne Road. The parade included special appearances from City officials, local charity organizations, and the Walnut High School Blue Thunder Marching Band.

During the opening ceremonies at Suzanne Park, Congressman Ed Royce joined the Walnut City Council on stage to welcome the residents to the event and congratulate the City on being known as one of the best cities to raise a family with a high quality of life.

“I have an opportunity as a member of congress to see a lot of parts of the world, but when I go to the schools here in Walnut and I see the community events, we all feel really good because this is really, really the example of what all of us aspire for in the United States,” Royce said. “This quality of life, these opportunities for our children – thank you for making it possible.”

Mayor Tragarz thanked everyone for braving the 90 degree weather, especially the community members at the Festival booths raising money for local non-profit organizations.

Walnut Family Festival newcomers, Robert and Renee Carpenter and their son Jacob, were excited to mix with the community and said the Festival was a perfect opportunity to do so. The Carpenters were residents of Monterey Park in Los Angeles until they moved to Walnut six months ago, where the couple immediately agreed that Walnut was a perfect place to raise a family, make friends and retire.

“We’re very happy here,” Robert said about becoming a Walnut resident and enjoying community event like the Walnut Family Festival.

The Carpenters even made their family a little larger at the festival, as they adopted a dog named Buster from the Redland’s Animal Shelter booth.

“I like the adoptions,” Renee said. “I like that they’re putting it out there and getting people to adopt.”

President of the Lions Club and 37-year resident, Jack Keating, said he was glad to be helping raise money for small City projects with the help of his organization’s booth. Keating said he also expects to raise an estimated $400 to $500 from his booth’s popcorn sales this year, which would go toward any of the programs the Lions Club has, including purchasing trees for the City, or the scholarships the group gives to Walnut High School graduates. Keating said the Festival never disappoints and that the strength of the community is what makes Walnut such a great city.

“The festival is about treating and involving yourself with all the people who live in the City of Walnut,” Keating said.

Eastvale: Another Boy Scout Seeks Merit Badge

BY K.P. SANDER

Eastvale – It seems at least a couple of scouts in Eastvale’s scout troop 433 had the same idea. Not one to stand in the way of a young lad getting a Communications Merit Badge, I happily offer you the second in the “Boy Scout Seeks Merit Badge” series. Good luck, Dylan. I’m feeling pretty confident about my next Batman Video Game purchase.

Hello Editor:

My name is Dylan Pavone. I am 13 years old, a Boy Scout from troop 433 and this article is for the communication merit badge. I would like to thank you for reading this and if you would put this in as a newspaper article I would really appreciate it, thank you. My article is on the top 10 Batman games we have today. Batman games are better than any other because they are unique in all of their own ways from gadgets to story lines, and how there all different. Thank you for reading this letter.

-Thank you, Dylan Pavone

Top 10 Batman Video Games

Let’s start with a countdown. Number 10, Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes, what makes this Batman game good is that it does not just have Batman and Robin, but as well as the whole Justice League with him, along there are lots of recognizable places that you would see in Gotham.

To number 9, Batman Return of the Joker. What makes this video game good is that Batman has long ranged weapons although he does have a lot of guns, which is something he is not that big of a fan.

Alright Number 8, Revenge of Shinobi. This game may not feature Batman as the main character, but he does show up in it. So there you are on a train to go defeat Peter Parker himself until he turns to Batman which is pretty scary because NO ONE beats the great Bat, but after a short time he turns into Satan which is not that bad compared to Batman, but for his appearance in the game made it good.

Now to number 7, Gotham City Imposters. This game is completely different from what we know as Batman, because he works alone, but the entire thought of a multiplayer Batman game blew everyone away. Not just that, but it’s a 1st player shooting game along with grappling hooks and other gadgets, but you fight all over Gotham.

Number 6, The Adventure of Batman and Robin (SNES). This game is all about moving platforms, and what makes this one great is that you get to chose what type of gadgets you can bring to battle. Not only these, but you get to fight Gotham’s worst villains.

Half way there, now to number 5, Batman Returns (NES). What makes this game number 5 is that it took the side view to well beat them up like the Teenage Super Mutant Ninja Turtles along with flying kicks, super moves, and dash attacks.

Number 4, The Adventures of Batman and Robin (GENENSIS). Gadgets and move along with platforms, and you might need a game genie because this game is not that easy to beat, and the only things you need are batarangs and fists.

To number 3, Batman Returns (SNES). They made this Batman look like a beast, and not just that, but as well he is a tank and has Brutal strength. The best part about this entire game is that you get to throw bad guys into the wall like nothing.

Number 2, Batman (NES). What makes this Batman game close to 1 is the amazing wall jumping that you can do. With his rocket pistol, and his mighty batarangs this game is one of the best.

The one you’ve been waiting for, Number 1, Batman Arkham Asylum/Arkham City. These games are the greatest games of Batman history because all the many places you can go to, as well with fantastic game play, gadgets, stealth, and pure strength makes this game number 1.

Orange County: Hurricane Swell Is Surfers Dream

STAFF REPORTS

Orange County – Although Hurricane Marie, centered about 800 miles off the Baja coast, has diminished into a tropical storm, our local beaches are still experiencing quite a ride.

The surf peaked on Wed., Aug. 27, with 25-foot waves pummeling the shores. For experienced surfers, this was a dream come true. Some of the world’s best surfers – Peter Mel, Laird Hamilton and Kelly Slater – were reportedly seen enjoying the monster waves on local beaches.

Said one surfer, “This is the type of wave you can get in Hawaii.”

While the recent surfing may be awe-inspiring and the stuff dreams are made of for those that can handle it, the rising swells and tides put a whole different spin on things for local authorities. Hundreds of people had to be rescued from the water, which kept lifeguards busy. Along with swells of this nature come rip tides and currents that are often not apparent until you’re in the midst of them. Even strong swimmers can find themselves in trouble.

Along with the rescues, some homes were in trouble as well as O.C. Fire Authority personnel worked to keep the flooding at bay. And police had their hands full this past week as traffic around the local beaches came to a standstill with everyone wanting to line the piers and view the spectacle.

There is a fine line between the excitement and the damage that storms can cause. While enticing and beautiful to behold, sometimes just watching the surf from solid shore is the best way to experience a phenomenon like this.

Pomona: Ontario Woman Pleads In Fatal DUI Case

Staff Reports

DUI Crash

Pomona – On Mon., Aug. 25, Raelene Martinez, 21, plead no contest in a DUI fatal collision case from an accident that occurred on Sun., Apr. 7, 2013, which took the life of her passenger, Serena Vargas.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, the collision occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on San Antonio Avenue, south of San Bernardino Road in Pomona. At the time, the 20-year old Martinez was said to have left the scene of a party – where she had been drinking alcohol – following an altercation. She got behind the wheel, with four other passengers in the car.

Martinez began to fight with the front passenger because she believed the person was involved in the fight at the party. At that point, Martinez took her hands off the steering wheel and began hitting the front passenger. The car lost control, hit a curb and two other vehicles, and then flipped over.

A back seat passenger, Vargas, 19, was ejected from the car and died at the scene. The three other passengers were also injured. Martinez was hospitalized, and later arrested and charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI casing injury, driving with a .08 percent blood alcohol causing injury, and a special allegation of personally inflicting great bodily injury in the commission of a crime.

The D.A.’s office stated that Martinez’ sentencing was scheduled for Aug. 29 in Los Angeles County Superior Court in Pomona. Under the terms of a negotiated plea agreement, she was expected to receive six years in state prison.

Orange County Toll Roads: Thousands of Violations?

STAFF REPORTS

Orange County – The website, www.thetollroads.com, states, “Sign up and drive today! With the end of cash toll collection, now all drivers enjoy a nonstop, stress free, time saving, reliable commute on The Toll Roads.” However, the “stress free” part might be a bit of a premature tagline.

In recent reports there have been as many as 17,000 violations in a single day since Orange County toll roads recently eliminated manned cash-collecting toll booths and became all electronic. Because of this transition, some of the fees are being waived for first-timers, but toll agencies are going to start enforcing penalties soon enough.

The Transportation Corridor Agency has eliminated the manpower in favor of electronic signaling for which commuters can utilize a special transponder, or pre-pay tolls online. There are always violations that occur in the toll roads, but the new system is obviously a source of mass confusion. Many drivers have been reported pulled over on the side of the road near the electronic booths trying to figure out what to do. With an estimated 250,000 motorists using the four Orange County toll roads each day, that’s a lot of perplexity.

If you sign up for an account online and provide bank or credit card debit access, you can receive a transponder and not worry too much about it. Those without accounts are required to pay one-time tolls online within 48 hours of their usage or suffer the consequences.

The agencies are trying to educate consumers on the new system and assist with the transition. For now they are said to be waiving the $57.50 violation penalty fee through Labor Day, as long as the toll is paid within a 30 day time frame. They are also installing more signage, and flashing information on nearby freeway information boards to help guide those heading for the toll booths.

It makes sense that the confusion has added significantly to the number of calls coming into the toll agencies. They have temporarily increased customer service representatives to help alleviate the backlog and provide assistance.

Visit wwwthetollroads.com to gather more information. You can pay online, or even download their payment app, One-Time Toll, to help you on your way. Just remember, don’t stop at the booth, just head on through or you’ll hold up the line. If you go through a toll booth, you’ll have to pay it in some fashion. With a little patience and education, it can be penalty-free.

Band of Brothers

BY PASTOR MARK HOPPER

Pastor Mark Hopper Diamond Bar

Pastor Mark Hopper

As we continue our journey through the Bible, we were recently studying the Old Testament book of 2 Samuel, about the life of King David. There are a variety of people and events recorded in this book. One passage that caught my attention was in Chapter 23. In this chapter, there is a list of David’s Mighty Men. Thirty different men are listed in this passage, and each one of them distinguished themselves with valor and courage in battle. Some stood alone when other soldiers fled. Some defeated powerful opponents.

In many ways, these mighty men would be equivalent to our country’s Medal of Honor recipients; men who have demonstrated great acts of courage in battle or risked their lives to save others.

In the HBO series entitled, “Band of Brothers,” we see the bond that develops between men who experience combat together. Several of the men who were interviewed for that series shared that they felt closer to their fellow soldiers than to their own family members. David’s Mighty Men were his inner circle. They were his closest friends and trusted advisors.

I am convinced that every man needs the friendship and encouragement of other men. Most men act like they are the Lone Ranger or Rambo in the movies. Men tend to be independent and isolated from the friendship of other men. Even the Lone Ranger had a companion in Tonto.

Men, let me encourage you to allow some other men to become part of your life. Give them the freedom to encourage you when you are discouraged and to warn you when you may be straying into dangerous territory. And let me encourage you to be a friend to them. They need your friendship and support as much as you need theirs. Look for some men who share common interests with you. Find some things to do together, such as camping, fishing, hiking or building; things that can be the first step to building a lasting friendship.

Most of us will probably never experience the hardships of military combat, but most of us can find a friend or two that we can share life’s’ journey with. We all need a Band of Brothers.

BY JENNIFER MADRIGAL

EASTVALE- A suspect has been arrested in the hit and run fatality of 21-year old Troy Davids. The suspect’s name is Casey Coltrain, a 26 year old Riverside County resident who will be charged with 2nd degree murder and hit and run. According to Lt. Yates, who has been actively working this case, “This has been an active investigation with thousands of hours used to find this suspect. We never stopped looking for the suspect responsible for this horrific crime and thanks to the hard work of investigators we were able to make an arrest”.

According to a Press Release from the Riverside County Sheriff Department, the suspected driver of a black sedan struck and killed Davids as he rode his bike home from work on April 25. The car sped off, and was last reported turning southbound on Scholar Way. According to the police report, witnesses said the driver didn’t even stop. Davids was transported to the local Ontario Kaiser hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

A few weeks ago, it was revealed that there was a tan Chevrolet Suburban that may have possibly witnessed the accident. Eastvale Police Department’s Traffic Division and local volunteers set up a checkpoint near the incident location on Hamner and Limonite and handed out flyers. The hope was that by getting the public more involved, someone who may have witnessed the incident would come forward with more information. The flyers provided a brief summary of a fatal hit and run traffic collision in the hopes of identifying possible witnesses. At the conclusion of the public outreach, five citizens came forward and provided information to Traffic Investigators about the case. The Eastvale Police Department had also assigned a full-time traffic officer to this case and the officer actively followed up on the many leads that came in.

“The Davids family has been an active part of this investigation. Cooperating and helping us in any way possible and we hope that this arrest can bring them some type of closure”, said Lt. Yates.

Walnut – This month, 5th Graders presented year-end research projects during the Exhibitions at C.J. Morris and Castle Rock elementary schools.

The end-of-the-year event is the culmination of the students’ K-5 learning experience at the international schools. 95 C.J. Morris students voted to choose the topic of Homelessness, based on one central idea: children worldwide face many challenges and risks. Each team chose an area to research and spent several weeks on their presentations. Topics included homeless in our community, state, country, and world. Each group developed an oral presentation, technology and creative component, and action plan for families, at the event held on May 15.

“We can all help homeless children all over the world and give them happiness,” said Team Action members, Joshua McBride, Eddie Cabrera, Kyle Tchen, Abbey Arzola, and Ginger Alvarez.

The team suggested several ideas to help out, including sending money to shelters, giving gift cards, donating clothing, food, or adopting homeless children. The group also made t-shirts, wrote a song, and created an iMovie for their project. They agreed they got to know each other and liked working together during the past weeks.

At Castle Rock Elementary, 5th Graders presented “Sharing the Planet” inquiry-based research projects during their I.B. Exhibition held on May 22. 86 students used their IB skills, attitudes, and attributes acquired in the elite program.

15 groups researched the topics of their choice, based on modern-day issues ranging from Water Usage to Renewable Energy and Global Warming. Presentations included display boards, technology and artistic components, mathematical data to support their findings, and action plans. Students created videos, hosted live debates, and were eager to answer questions after the program.
