Diamond Bar/Walnut: Day At The Fair

Diamond Bar/Walnut – The Los Angeles County Fair is back for another year, open from Aug. 29 through Sept. 28. Residents of Diamond Bar and Walnut can celebrate their city spirit by visiting the Fair on their special Community Day, along with receiving an admission discount.

‘Diamond Bar Day’ is Thurs., Sept. 11 and ‘Walnut Day’ is Fri., Sept. 26. Residents can purchase tickets for just $5 for their city’s day by presenting a coupon located on city websites, or by purchasing ticketing online at www.lacountyfair.com/buytickets. For Diamond Bar residents, the promotion code is ‘diamond bar’. For Walnut residents, the online promotion code is ‘walnut’.

There are special events surrounding these Community Days at the Fair, including a parade, high school marching band competition, Community Hero Volunteer Award presentations and entertainment by community-based groups.

The Diamond Bar Day ticket proceeds will even benefit the Big Yellow Bus program, which pays for bus transportation for Diamond Bar students to attend the fair as part of a school-sponsored fieldtrip, according to the City of Diamond Bar website.

The LA County Fair is displaying a variety of attractions, including a carnival, animal farm, a Chinese lantern display, a hall of heroes, and even a brand new nightclub called, Grinding Gears. And don’t forget world-famous “Fair Food.”   There is a wide variety for everyone, along with an unwritten law that you must enjoy something on a stick. There are also wine, spirits and a beer marketplace, presented by Groupon.

Food trucks may include: The Slummin’ Gourmet, Macho Nacho, Rolling Sushi, Cup Cakery, Crepes Bonaparte, White Rabbit, and Dos Chinos. VantagePoint Church Event to Provide Free Entertainment Labor Day Weekend

Eastvale – This Labor Day Weekend, VantagePoint Church will conclude its successful Summer of Love campaign with a free evening of entertainment for the whole family.

The event, Flicks and Food Trucks, will be held on Sunday, August 31 at the Roosevelt High School outdoor amphitheater.  In addition to food trucks and a screening of the film “How to Train Your Dragon,” the festivities will also include games, raffles, an inflatable obstacle course, and a rock climbing wall.

“This summer, VantagePoint Church went out into the community and passed out water, Starbucks coffee cards, and Redbox movie codes.  We also fed the homeless and served more than 325 athletes at our Friday Night Lights Football and Cheer Camp,” said Monique Whritenour, director of community outreach.  “Flicks and Food Trucks is the final event in our Summer of Love.  It will provide the entire community with free entertainment in a safe environment.”

This is the second year that VantagePoint Church has hosted Flicks and Food Trucks.  Last year, more than 1,000 people were in attendance.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a performance by the band Western Express.  The movie will begin at 7:30 p.m.  Everything will be free, with the exception of food purchases.

“This summer, VantagePoint Church invested 1,025 service hours into being living proof of a loving God,” Whritenour said.  “Flicks and Food Trucks will be a great way to wrap up our successful Summer of Love campaign and will also allow us to celebrate Labor Day with our local community.  It is going to be a blast!”

Walnut/West Covina – It seems like every city has concerts or movies in the park nowadays, and Walnut and West Covina are no exception. In fact, this is a great form of entertainment, and with blankets and picnic baskets laid out to enjoy, and friends and family nearby, it is almost akin to a time gone by.

 

This year, the City of Walnut will entertain at Creekside Park, located at 780 Creekside Drive. On Tuesday evenings from 6 to 10:30 p.m., you and yours can enjoy some great music, followed by a family movie. If that weren’t enough, admission is FREE!

On July 2, 2014, the Eastvale Police Department and community members will be coming together in an informal setting at a local coffee house to discuss community issues and build relationships while enjoying a cup of coffee. All community members are invited to attend. The event will take place from 8:00AM – 10:00AM on July 2, 2014, at the Starbucks located at 14268 Schleisman Road.

Coffee with a Cop provides an opportunity for community members to ask questions, learn more about the Eastvale Police Department and meet your officers. There will be no agenda or speeches, just an opportunity to voice your concerns and get to know the officers in your neighborhood.

The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies, or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community, and some community members may feel that deputies are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by the United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the country, as local police departments, sheriff’s offices, and state police forces strive to make lasting connections with communities they serve.

Diamond Bar – The City of Diamond Bar has an exciting summer planned for residents and visitors. There is a plethora of recreational events taking place, and you are invited to participate in a season of fun.

 

City of Diamond Bar Concerts In the parkFirst off, clear all your Wednesday evenings and prepare to be entertained with concerts and movies under the stars. Sycamore Canyon Park (22930 Golden Springs Drive) will host this family favorite, with free admission and parking – including handicapped accessible shuttle service to and from Diamond Bar Golf Course. All events begin at 6:30 p.m., from June 18 through August 13. The concerts will start the evening off, followed by the movie feature.

Two new venues have officially opened this week and are available to help you enjoy your summer just a little bit more. Located in Hacienda Heights, Orange Grove Park, a 5.5 acre environmentally conscientious development includes strolling or jogging paths, shaded picnic tables, an exercise course, accessible playground, open space areas, and restrooms. It is located at14517 Orange Grove Avenue. Pathfinder Park in Rowland Heights now has a new Splash Pad to help you beat the heat. The 3,000 square foot pad and shade structure was completed adjacent to the existing community center building on the upper level of the park, located at 18150 Pathfinder Road. The splash pad includes areas of direct sun and shade for all to enjoy.  There are 10 sprayers with a combined capacity of 165 gallons per minute, as well as water jets appropriate for age ranges from toddlers to teens.  In addition, the area features a 1,000 square foot shade structure and seating for 50 people.  A 4,000 gallon underground tank recycles water runoff, treats the water with an ultra violet system and minimal chlorine to cleanse water before it circulates back into the splash pad.

Details: The ceremony will include performances of the National Anthem, presentation of colors and retiring of the colors from the West Covina High School Air Force Jr. ROTC. The ceremony will also include special guest speaker Ms. Rosemary Rodriguez, who will speak about her brother Joel Sabel, a West Covina resident who lost his life in Vietnam on July 10, 1967. He posthumously received the Distinguished Service Cross. Artist Karl Benjamin Mosaic Unveiling

San Antonio College and its Public Arts Council will unveil the first of a series of mosaic reproductions of internationally renowned Claremont artist, Karl Benjamin, during an unveiling ceremony.
