Inland Empire– Ongoing operations have been conducted to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians to help prevent accidents. Here is a recap of the news releases from Riverside County’s Sheriff’s Department and Corona Police Department.

Norco- On May 20, Norco’s Sheriff’s officers conducted a Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation on Hamner Avenue and Second Street between the hours of 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Officers paid special attention to drivers and pedestrians who sped, made illegal turns, failed to stop for signs and signals, failed to yield to pedestrians, and other violations. During the operation, a total of 67 citations were issued for the following: 38 for failing to stop at red light, 25 for failing to stop for pedestrian in crosswalk, 3 for distracted driving,  and 1 misdemeanor warrant.

Corona- On May 22, the Corona Police Department responded to the 2000 block of Promenade Avenue of a vehicle versus a pedestrian traffic collision. At arrival, officers found a 15-year-old deceased body. Corona Police Departments Collision Reconstruction Team responded to handle the investigation. They believe the victim purposely entered the roadway. The driver involved was not injured or cited and the investigation remains active.

Jurupa Valley- On May 23, in Jurupa Valley, a fatal traffic collision occurred on Van Buren cross of Etiwanda. The driver was a 26-year-old male who was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was driving a Honda civic traveling south on Van Buren Boulevard, in which he veered off the roadway and struck a tree. Corona- On May 28, Corona Police Department and Corona Fire Department responded to the area of Hidden Valley East on the I-15 freeway for reports of a severe injury related traffic collision. A Ford Fusion driven by Debbie Ward of Norco entered the roadway and in the path of two motorcyclists, which were Zachariah Macias, 24-years old of Norco, and Phillip Borja, 25-years old of Upland. Borja struck the driver’s side and Macias took an evasive action to avoid colliding with the Ford Fusion, forcing him to drive eastbound in the westbound lanes of travel on Hidden Valley. Both motorcyclists ended up striking a Volkswagon Beetle driven by Marissa Frantz of Corona. The second collision caused Borja’s motorcycle and the Beetle to both catch fire. Both Macias and Borja were transported to Riverside Community Hospital for serious injuries. Macias was released from the hospital but Borja died at the hospital from the injuries he received. No arrests were made, and no one was cited. This collision is being further investigated by the Corona Police Department’s Collision Response Team. Walnut High Student Killed

Walnut– Walnut High School Student, Fernando Basurto, 18, was shot and killed on Thursday, May 19.

The Walnut/Diamond Bar Station responded to the 18400 Block of Desidia Street, Rowland Heights for a “gunshot victim” call. Immediately, they were directed to the alley, where the victim had been shot, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Basurto was treated by paramedics but pronounced dead at the scene.

After the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives conducted an investigation, they’ve learned that the victim was shot at approximately 11:41 p.m. Witnesses recalled seeing two acquaintances with the victim hanging out in the garage of an apartment complex, when two Hispanics in their 20’s had confronted them. The verbal confrontation led to a physical altercation, which at some point a gun was pulled out and the suspect allegedly started firing at all 3 victims. The Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Basurto was the only one hit, in the upper torso.

The two suspects immediately fled east from the alley and out of view after the shooting. The other two victims were not injured, and it is unknown whether this incident was gang related.

Walnut High School announced that they have mobilized a crisis team who are available on an ongoing basis, including Grade Level Counselors, school psychologists, and direct personnel.

There is no additional information available at this point, but this is an ongoing investigation.

Man Arrested For Attempted Robbery/Kidnapping

Chino Hills – A Chino Hills resident was arrested last week for attempted robbery and kidnapping at a local Rite Aid.

On Sunday, May 8, a suspect entered the Rite-Aid off 4200 Chino Hills Parkway and allegedly demanded drugs from the attending pharmacy. The suspect demanded OxyContin, Suboxone and other prescription drugs, while threatening to use a gun to hurt someone if he did not get them. Chino Hills Police say that the pharmacy technician refused to give the suspect the drugs, so the suspect “jumped over the counter and chased her into a restroom,” according to a news release.

Then the suspect grabbed the pharmacy technician by both arms and “forcefully pulled the pharmacy technician to the pharmaceutical area,” said the news release. The Store Manager attempted to intervene.

Instead, the suspect held the pharmacy technician’s hands behind her back and ordered the Store Manager to give him all the drugs. The suspect threatened to hurt the technician if the Store Manager did not comply.

“After a brief standoff, [the suspect] released the pharmacy technician unharmed, and fled the store,” said the Chino Hills Police Department.

After the suspect left the store, Deputy D. Emery of the Chino Hills Police Department apprehended him within a block of the scene of the crime, according to Chino Hills Deputies.

The suspect was identified as John C. Annabel, 29. The Store Manager confirmed that Annabel was the man who entered the store and Annabel was subsequently arrested.

EASTVALE – March Crime Recap

Eastvale – The following crime incidents have been reported by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the City of Eastvale.

On Sunday, March 2, at about 2:23 p.m. Eastvale officers responded to the 12000 block of Limonite Avenue to investigate a burglary in progress. Two adult male suspects were observed removing the protective security packaging from items in the electronics department of the local Target Shopping Center. After both men exited the building, an individual who reported the theft was able to provide a vehicle description to authorities.

Once deputies arrived on location and were able to locate the vehicle, an enforcement stop was conducted. According to the press release, “Upon making contact, the suspect opened the door to the vehicle releasing a large pit bull that immediately charged the deputy. The deputy was forced to defend himself and fired two rounds at the dog, striking it. The dog is expected to survive. None of the suspects or deputies were injured during the altercation.”

The suspects were identified as Salvadore Lopez Garcia, 38, of Fullerton, who was detained outside the business with stolen property in his possession. The second suspect was identified as Sage Hall, 25, of Canyon Lake. Both men were booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for burglary, possession of stolen property, and conspiracy.

On Friday, March 14, deputies assigned to the Eastvale Police Department were conducting high visibility proactive patrols throughout the City when they observed a black 2000 Honda Accord driving in a residential neighborhood. The deputies observed the driver fail to stop for a stop sign and conducted a traffic enforcement stop. Upon contacting the driver, the deputies learned he was on probation and had been recently released on bail. An investigation revealed the suspect had stolen merchandise earlier in the day as well as additional stolen items from various victims throughout the surrounding communities, along with illegal controlled substances. The suspect, identified as James Perez, 28, from Jurupa Valley, was arrested and booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center and is being held on $25,000 bail for commercial burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of burglary tools, violation of probation and committing offenses while out on bail.

On Thursday, March 20, at 5:30 p.m., a search warrant was served by officers assigned to the City of Eastvale’s Special Enforcement Team. During the service of this search warrant, no subjects were detained inside the residence located in the 6000 Block of Massey Way. Officers discovered the residence had been modified for the sole purpose of cultivating, processing and packaging marijuana for sale.  Officers seized 295 marijuana plants.  Additionally, electricity was being bypassed around the meter, causing a serious fire hazard and resulting in approximately $5,000 per month in stolen electricity.

 

On March 25 at around 8:00 p.m. deputies observed a vehicle drivingwestboundon Limonite Avenue, failing to navigate inside the lane and using incorrect signal direction when changing lanes. Deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a possible DUI. The vehicle slowed, but continued onto the northbound entrance ramp of the I-15 where it came to a stop. The driver refused to lower the window and sped off when asked to turn the vehicle off. A pursuit then ensued and the vehicle continued northbound on the I-15 exiting at Cantu Galleano Road, stopping at the intersection of Cantu Galleano and Caden Way.  The driver was the sole occupant and refused to supply a breath or blood sample. There were no injuries during the pursuit or damage to private property. The suspect was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center.
