Sheriff Department Recognizes Volunteers

Diamond Bar, CA – Last week the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Booster Club hosted their 27th Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner at the Diamond Bar Country Club, to a crowded room of over 105 guests. The night honored volunteers who have given their time and energy to assisting the department on a volunteer basis.

DCS member Mark Coon, Explorer Isaiah Garcia, Reserve Deputy Victor Hassan, Volunteers Sebe Garton, Fernando Prado, Lois Van Akin, and Larry Wang were recognized as Volunteers of the Year for their respective areas. Congressman Ed Royce, representatives from the State Senate and Assembly in Sacramento, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, and members of the Diamond Bar and Walnut City Councils attended to show their appreciation.

“Our station has one of the finest volunteer programs in LA County,” said Captain Alfred Reyes. “We have over 100 volunteers who proudly serve our communities.”

The recognition dinner, which is funded by the Sheriff Booster club via donations to their non-profit 501 c 3 organization, serves two purposes: first to acknowledge the countless hours the Disaster Communication Services (DCS) members, Deputy Explorers, Reserve Deputies, and Volunteers donate to the Station during the year. The second purpose was to recognize specific individuals from each program who went above and beyond in their service to the station and the community.

“Each year we hold an annual golf tournament to raise funds for this event among other needs the department needs that are not on the budget from the county,” said Sheriff Booster President Gil Rivera of www.SellYourCasa.com. “They give generously of their time to help in many areas including patrol and vacation home checks, in addition to thousands of hours at sobriety check points and school traiffic assistance.”

WVUSD Trustees Recognize Students, Parents For Making A Difference

Fifth grade artists are recognized as honorable mention winners in the Music K-8 Magazine Cover Contest.

WALNUT—Super star students and parent volunteers from Maple Hill and Westhoff elementary schools were honored by the Walnut Valley USD Board of Trustees on April 19.

In addition, the Board recognized 14 talented young artists named winners in the 2017 Music K-8 Magazine Cover Contest and the 2017 Board Representatives.

Maple Hill Elementary all-star parent Natalie Johnson received the Partner in Education Award.

“When there is fun at Maple Hill, Natalie is front and center,” said Principal Kelly Morris.

Natalie, a Maple Hill alum, serves as the community club 2nd vice president in charge of fundraising.

This year, she planned and organized a new VIP Dance, along with the annual fall fundraiser, luau lunch, Hawk Walk pep rally, and jog-a-thon.

Natalie’s personal priority is to be a champion for kids. She also strives to make sure they receive the same love and excitement she received at the school, Morris said.

“Her events generate excitement and joy in the lives of all our children and teachers. She is a true memory maker!”

Fifth grader Leah Owens received Super Star Student Award.

“Leah has been capturing all our hearts since the first grade. She is incomparable, dynamic, effervescent, and beyond loving,” Morris described.

She has the gift of connecting with people, whether they are strangers or life-long friends.

“Leah has such a light within her, but also knows how to encourage the light within others,” Morris said.

This year, Maple Hill created a new school slogan: Kind Hearts, Strong Minds, Brave Spirit, Hawk Pride.

“Leah is the poster child and embodies all of these qualities!” Morris added.

Current and former teachers were also on hand to pay tribute to the student of the year who volunteers, greets students, makes announcements, and shares “Hawk Pride” all around the campus.

“On numerous occasions, I have watched Leah showing kindness to students who are struggling to make friends,” said 4th grade teacher Samantha Valadez.

“She sees the best in people and easily finds ways to make meaningful connections.”

Two valuable members of the Westhoff Elementary community were honored with the Partner in Education Award.

Parent Valerie Lu quickly became a volunteer in her children’s classes when they started school in 2013, and now serves as the community club vice president.

Valerie collaborates with other parents and stepped up to coordinate phone banking during recent bond campaigns. She helps lead and serve at all schoolwide events including culture fair, walk-a-thon, movie night, Santa’s workshop, and colonial fair. She is also the co-chair for the 5th grade promotion committee and is currently making keepsake invitations for students.

“Westhoff staff members feel that she is responsible, reliable, humble, and never seeks recognition for all that she quietly does behind the scenes,” said Principal Denise Rendon.

Dedicated volunteer Preston McChesney has been helping out in his two children’s classes for the past several years. He is always available when needed and has a positive attitude that rubs off on others.

“Our teachers say that they can count on tons of support from this Dad!” Rendon said.

Preston can often be found sitting on the floor helping classroom reading groups, chaperoning field trips, setting up class parties, and even taking pictures for parents who aren’t there. And most importantly, he is an excellent role model for Westhoff students.

“He inspires all of us with his positive attitude, his devotion to his beautiful family, and genuine kindness he shares so freely. Thank you, for the generous donation of your time!” said Rendon.

Fifth grader Valentina Galvan was recognized with the Super Star Student Award.

Valentina exemplifies good character and sets a wonderful example for her classmates, according to teacher Kimberley Dalton.  She “buddy” reads with struggling readers or those learning English, and brings a smile to those around her because she is so encouraging.

This year, the active student council member led school spirit rallies, organized a school-wide book drive for an orphanage in Rosemead, collected socks for the homeless people, and helped run a note-writing campaign for those serving in the military.

Valentina is always willing to help those around her, and at the same time, maintains excellent study habits, great grades, and citizenship.

“Valentina has a natural sense of goodness and she will do extraordinary things!” Rendon said.

Fourteen elementary students were recognized as winners in the international 2017 Music K-8 Magazine Cover Contest.

Music Specialist Greta Baker introduced the talented 5th grade artists who received certificates of special recognition and color prints of their original designs.

This year’s top WVUSD winner is 2nd Runner-Up – Nadia Tsai from Vejar. Top Finalists are Justin Kung- Castle Rock and Sarah Fan – Westhoff. Finalists are Gloria Nien – Maple Hill, Melody Song – Quail Summit, and Ashley Chiu – Castle Rock. Honorable Mentions are Ashton Chen – Evergreen, Riley Phan – Walnut, LeAnna Fan – Vejar, Mia Zhang – Castle Rock, Alyssa Ma – Maple Hill, Sabrina Lin – Maple Hill, Amin Rasheed – Vejar, and Isabella Torreyson – Vejar.

WVUSD Trustees recognized the 2017 Student Representatives Abigail Nakaishi – Diamond Bar High and Katelyn Rowley – Walnut High for dedicated service.

The seniors are appointed to serve one-year terms, acting as liaisons between their campuses and the Board. Each month, the teens attend open meetings and present detailed reports of campus activities.

Distracted Driving: Be Aware! A Month of Enforcement

Diamond Bar – This month is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and CHP officers will be acting accordingly in and around the Diamond Bar Area.

This past week, April 5th was an enforcement day, as will be April 19th. Officers will be on the look out to give citations. Moreover, officers have been and will continue to speak to drivers of all ages warning them of dangers of distracted driving.

According to California law, the phone must not be observed to impair the driver’s ability to see, nor can it block the potential deployment of an airbag. Many judgments of officers of what this means is based on a case-by-case scenario, with the officer’s discretion.

Distracted driving and reckless driving is the number one killer of teens in America, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A driver must not hold or operate electronic devices, including smart phones. For a phone to be legally visible in the car, a phone must be mounted on the dash, the center console or one of the lower corners of the windshield, according to CHP.

Man Convicted For Murder May Avoid Life

Diamond Bar – A man accused of killing a gas station attendant over 20 years ago was convicted last week in the two decade old murder may avoid serving a life sentence because he was a teenager at the time, authorities said Tuesday.

Lino Jesus Acero, now 38, was 17 years old when he walked into an Arco gas station on Nov. 18, 1994, in a robbery attempt that killed Mahfouz Ghabour. Acero was convicted of being the trigger man when he went behind the counter and shot Ghabour in the chest. He fled with an accomplice empty handed, officials said.

The jury, who deliberated for only a few days, convicted Acero last Monday. Using a handgun in a crime would normally lead to a life sentence without parole, but because of a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year found that such punishment was cruel and unusual for juveniles.

Acero faces at least 25 years to life in prison, authorities said. He’s scheduled to be sentenced June 10 when the judge can order the life sentence or a reduced sentence.

Gas Prices Are Dropping In Diamond Bar

Diamond Bar – Gas prices have dropped for the 11th consecutive day in the San Gabriel Valley, according to AAA.

On Wednesday, Los Angeles County gas prices dropped another half-cent to $3.036. This is following a nine-day consistent decrease in prices, adding to 2.7 cents.

While the average price per gallon is 2.4 cents less than a week ago, it is in fact 4.9 cents more than just one month ago, and a whopping 24.7 cents higher than a year ago, quotes AAA and Oil Information Service.

In Orange County, the cost of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline decreased for the 11th consecutive day Wednesday. This decreases regular gasoline another half-cent, to $3.019.

Orange County reflects a similar gas price pattern to that of Diamond Bar. Gas prices in Orange have dropped 3.8 cents over the last 11 days, which is 2.5 cents less than a week ago. Yet, still, the same gallon of gasoline is approximately 2.8 more than a month ago in Orange, and another 24.5 cents higher than one year ago.

So the new figures beg the question: are gas prices getting better, or are they getting worse?

Former K-Mart Center Gets Renovated

Diamond Bar – Many citizens in the city of Diamond Bar are wondering just what is going on at Diamond Bar Boulevard (where the “old K-Mart” used to reside), and there is thankfully some new revealing information.

While the property is managed by private owners, construction is currently underway. According to Community Development Director Greg Gubman, there have been several approvals solidified thus far of new tenants in what will become the renovated building. Of those tenants,

Sprouts Market and Ross are confirmed, and will be completed and operational by the projected date of Dec. 2017.

Gubman also said that there have been a few approved establishments for the empty lot space just adjacent to Diamond Bar Boulevard: Chipotle and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, the latter of which will have a drive through. These are also estimated to be completed by the end of the year, though that completion time may run into early next year.

There will be additional tenants occupying the renovated former K-Mart building, and the private owners of the property are still securing those tenants.

When asked how this will benefit the city, Director Gubman said, “These various retail uses will help diversify the revenues for the city of Diamond Bar.” This is not only needed in the community, it is greatly desired, as the current state does not provide benefit or aesthetic appeal.

One of the goals delineated by the City Council at the beginning of the year to promote long-term economic development was the following: “In cooperation with the property owners, redevelop the K-Mart site to include retail and restaurant options.”

The city is now fulfilling that objective, much to the relief of many Diamond Bar residents.

$30,000 Reward Offered For Diamond Bar Couples Murders

Diamond Bar – Supervisor Janice Hahn announced last Wednesday a reward of $20,000 for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the person(s) responsible for a Diamond Bar couple’s murder. In addition, the City of Diamond Bar approved an additional $10,000 reward, totaling $30,000 in reward money.

On October 20, 2016, a family friend visited the home of a senior couple, in the 3300 block of Bent Twig Lane, Diamond Bar, to check on them. The couples’ family, who were unable to reach them, asked the friend to check on the couple.
The husband and wife team, who operated a studio out of their home and taught art lessons were discovered deceased in their home.

Cheng Long Wang, 60, and Mei Chu Chung, 57, were pronounced dead at the scene from multiple stab wounds.
The $20,000 reward was approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors earlier this month, and the city of Diamond Bar approved a $10,000 reward thereafter.

According to a press release issued by the LA County Sheriff’s Department, both Cheng Long Wang, known as David, and Mei Chu Chung, known as Marian, emigrated from Taiwan in the year 2000.

“They were creative and well-respected within their community, and in an instant, the home which this gentle couple shared with others as a place to learn and be creative was turned into a crime scene where they were brutally attacked, stabbed to death and likely robbed,” the statement read.
At a press conference held at the Hall of Justice, the Homicide Bureau unit commander, Captain Steve Katz, introduced one of the couple’s children, Dr. Gary Wang.  Dr. Wang explained how difficult the loss of his parents has been –not just for him and his sister, but for his 4-year-old daughter.  He revealed how his little girl missed video chats with grandma and cried at night for her grandparents; and relayed how he had to put their death in terms she could understand by explaining that grandma and grandpa “went to heaven.”
Dr. Wang made an emotional plea to the public, asking them to provide any information which may help solve the murder of his parents, for their justice, the release said.
“This couple were married for 30 years and were the classic example of an American success story,” Sheriff McDonald said.  He recognized the retired couple for having raised a successful family, as evidenced by their children who both became doctors, and for having dedicated time to their community by offering art lessons in their home.
Supervisor Janice Hahn, 4th District, thanked Sheriff McDonnell, Captain Katz and the Homicide Bureau detectives for their hard work on this investigation.  In an effort to encourage witnesses to step forward, she announced a monetary reward approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.  The reward of $20,000 was offered in exchange for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the couple’s murder.
Captain Katz presented a second monetary reward which was approved by the city of Diamond Bar for $10,000, offered in addition to the Board of Supervisors’ reward offer.

Maple Hill Crowns Spelling Champ

DIAMOND BAR—After an exciting final round, Maple Hill Elementary fourth grader Eric Choi won the Scripps Spelling Bee on January 12.

“I don’t have any words to describe how I feel right now!” the beaming nine-year-old exclaimed after being named grand champion.

During the last 20 minutes of the contest, Choi battled second grader Jon Wong.

Both boys stepped up to the microphone to correctly spell words like pugnacious, castellated, Lilliput, and constabulary.

Many of the nearly 30 words from the nail-biting finale were “never seen before in order to test the spelling skills of the students,” said Principal Kelly Morris.

“They should be commended!” she said.

In December, each first through fifth grade class hosted a spelling bee using official Scripps words.

The classroom champs were then given 500-word study lists to prepare for the finals.

During Thursday’s contest, the grade-level winners were awarded medals, and then went head-to-head for the championship-round.

The school’s top spellers include Justin Tran – 1st, Jon Wong – 2nd, Emily Aldaz – 3rd, Eric Choi – 4th, and Sabrina Lin – 5th.

Choi will represent Maple Hill in March during the Scripps Inland Valley Regional Spelling Bee semifinals held at Mt. San Antonio College.

Choi said that reading a lot probably helped him clinch the title.

“My favorite books are the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan.”

 

DeAnda Honored At County Teacher Of The Year Luncheon

The Walnut Valley Unified School District (WVUSD) 2016 District Teacher of the Year, Frank DeAnda from the Ron Hockwalt Academies, was among 73 top teachers from around the county celebrated during an awards luncheon on September 16. Educators took the stage at the Universal City Hilton ballroom to receive tributes, awards, and congratulations from Los Angeles County Schools Superintendent Dr. Debra Duardo. WVUSD will pay tribute to the 2015-2016 Teachers of the Year during the 19th annual Salute to Teachers slated for October 19.

 Diamond Bar, Walnut High make Newsweek’s 2016 list

Walnut Valley’s high performing schools have once again gained national recognition. Diamond Bar and Walnut High Schools are featured in Newsweek’s 2016 report of the 500 best high schools in America. The news magazine’s annual list highlights public high schools that do the best job of preparing students for college. A total of 51 California schools were recognized. Newsweek rated 15,819 high schools in the country based on factors including student scores on state tests, SAT and ACT exams and Advanced Placement tests. The rankings also consider graduation rate, the ratio of counselors to students, student participation in AP courses and the percentage of college-bound students.

 STEM Tech Trek winners

Congratulations to four WVUSD middle school students who received scholarships to attend the week-long Tech Trek camp held at UC Irvine last summer. Madeline Wang from South Pointe, and Prabhleen Kaur, Lily Rzonca, and Annie Guo from Suzanne were nominated by their 7th grade science teachers and selected by the Walnut/Diamond Bar AAUW Chapter committee. The annual STEM camp is designed to encourage young women to continue studying science and math in middle school and beyond. On September 15, the campers, who are now 8th graders, reported on their experiences at the Diamond Bar Library. “I was so happy Madeleine was selected to attend this worthwhile event since she was always inquisitive, interested, and a motivated leader in my 7th grade science class,” said South Pointe teacher Shelly Yamashiro.  “The camp provided a chance for the girls to experience all aspects of science & technology, such as developing apps, working with liquid nitrogen and dry ice and interviewing notable NASA scientists, just to name a few.  I know Madeleine (and the other girls that participated) are now seriously thinking about their amazing futures in science!”

Suzanne math teacher receives award

Suzanne Middle School math teacher Amy Erickson is among 34 teachers from around the country selected as winners of the 2016 Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished Mathematics Teaching in Middle and High School. The award gives recognition of high school and middle school mathematics teachers whose teams participate in Mathematical Association of America AMC Competitions. Awardees are acknowledged for their encouragement and commitment that is making a noticeable difference in students’ problem-solving abilities and love of mathematics. In addition, winners are awarded a $500 stipend.

 Two Sisters host workshop at Quail Summit

Renowned educators/authors/professional development presenters Gail Boushey and Joan Moser, known as “The 2 Sisters”, visited Quail Summit Elementary on September 15 to provide demonstration lessons for primary level teachers. The 2 Sisters travel all over the world providing engaging, on-point workshops on literacy and math structure, targeted instruction and developing life-long learners. The pro bono workshop at Quail Summit was considered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “It was an extraordinary gift to have them at our school,” said Principal Jeanette Koh.

 Collegewood ‘Grades of Green’ sparks change

Pitzil Milagro, a 4th grade student leader at Collegewood Elementary recently spoke before the Los Angeles County Public Works Board of Directors to explain the school’s Grades of Green Team accomplishments. Collegewood won 1st place in the Trash Free Lunch Challenge last year.  The school-wide efforts made a significant decrease in lunchtime trash – from a whopping 20 bags – down to just 3 bags of waste each day. Students also wrote to Superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor about banning polystyrene trays at lunch which led to a districtwide ban on the trays. The Board agreed that Collegewood’s environmental efforts should be inspirational to schools everywhere!

The event starts at 3 p.m. and ends at 9:30 p.m. Included will be carnival rides and games, a food court, a performance by The Answer, Military recognition, and end with a firework showing starting at approximately 9 p.m.

Diamond Bar- Diamond Bar High School, 21400 Pathfinder Rd., will be hosting a 4th of July Blast!

This event will start at 5 p.m. with a musical performance by the band, Cold Duck; followed by a firework show that will start promptly at 9 p.m. Parking and admission are free. You may bring a picnic dinner or purchase concessions from local non-profit vendors.

Diamond Bar – A backyard swimming pool can provide hours of summer fun for families, but without proper safety measures in place, it can also pose a danger to young children.

According to statistics kept by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the United States and approximately one in five people who die from drowning are age 14 and younger.

Also, for every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency care for nonfatal injuries that result in severe brain damage and long-term disabilities such as memory problems, learning disabilities, and permanent vegetative state.

To help prevent a pool-related death or injury, backyard pool owners are urged to ensure that they have in place the following layers of protection:

  • A self-closing and locking fence enclosing the pool area, clear of ladders or other furniture that can be used by children to climb over.
  • A responsible adult with swimming experience and trained in CPR and other lifesaving techniques always supervising children in or near the pool.
  • Visible and quickly accessible water rescue equipment, such as a rescue hook pole and life buoy, as well as a list of emergency phone numbers, a wireless phone and CPR instructions.

DB Wine Soirée A Success

Diamond Bar- Chairs Nancy, Lyons, Rick Rogers and Tony Torng sincerely thank everyone who helped make the 23rd annual Wine Soirée such a resounding success.    Special thanks to Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe and Julie Knabe for leading us this year as Honorary Chairs.  The Diamond Bar Center was buzzing with activity that Sunday afternoon, April 24, as hundreds of people gathered for an exciting afternoon of festivities all focused on our Diamond Bar Library and literacy in our community.  The food tasting was exceptional with generous servings of delicious food offered by Albertsons Market, Aljibani Halal Market, Chili’s Grill and Bar, Claro’s Italian Restaurant, Del Taco, Diamond Palace, Encore Teppan, Got Taco Party?, Graber Olive House, It’s A Grind, Jeseca Creations, Jasmine Mediterranean, Julie’s Café, Mandarin Taste Restaurant, Mr. G’s Pizza, NiNi Bakery, The Noodle, and The Whole Enchilada.  Thanks to Total Wine and More for hosting our first French Wine Tasting Table.  Cal Poly Innovation Brew-Works generously hosted a table of their delicious micro brews.  Visit them is person and thank them for their support for literacy in our community.

By participating in the annual Wine Soirée, you know you will have great afternoon with old and new friends and know that all of the proceeds go directly to your local Diamond Bar Library and literacy in our community.  Those attending this great event can feel good that all the fun they are having – the food and wines they taste, the auction and raffle items they win, the music they enjoy – all the proceeds from this will go to improve our quality of life and learning.  The annual Wine Soirée is an institution in Diamond Bar and is a great way to meet new and old friends and neighbors.  If you are interested in participating in next year’s Soirée, contact Rick Rogers at www.dblibraryfriends.org.

Evergreen Odyssey of the mind team going to World Finals

Diamond Bar—Seven Evergreen Elementary students combined creativity and STEM skills to solve challenges that have put them in a class of their own.

The school’s Odyssey of the Mind team won a regional contest in February, then swept the state championship at UC Riverside in April, securing a spot in the World Finals.

Members clinched the state title during the “Stack Attack” event by designing and building a 15-gram structure made of balsa wood and glue that held over 800 pounds.

“It’s an amazing achievement, and an incredible opportunity for these creative thinkers and problem solvers!  Congratulations, Evergreen Odyssey of the Mind team, it’s GAME ON!” said

Principal Carolyn Wills.

Third and fifth-grade-team members Ianna Lin, Annie Chen, Alexander Kuo, Alex Teng, Carrie Chen, William Qian, and Alexander Dollar are now preparing to be part of an exciting global competition to be held at Iowa State University on May 25-28.

The close-knit team wrote the script, designed costumes, decorated a backdrop, and learned how to use tools for the contest.

“We worked together, and learned to listen and to respect each other,” said 5th grader Alexander Dollar.

In addition, the team prepared for a spontaneous problem given during the challenge.

During every team meeting, students diligently practiced solving possible problems.

“It helped us learn to work as a team, to be leaders, and to make decisions under pressure,” added teammate Alexander Kuo.

The team won the top awards in Style, Long-term, and Spontaneous events during the state championship.

Odyssey of the Mind utilizes a hands-on approach to building skills, creativity, perseverance, and teamwork.

The Evergreen team is headed up by parent coaches Sam and Jean Lin, and Natasha Dollar, and everyone is excited to represent the community during the world championship.

“It’s something the youngsters have worked for all year long,” according to parent Jean Lin.

“We really appreciate Evergreen’s STEM program that provides students with many opportunities,” she added.

“Today our children built a structure that held 800 lbs., tomorrow they’ll be holding the world!

Diamond Bar Council Recap

Diamond Bar– The Diamond Bar April 19 City Council meeting began by a proclamation, declaring April 2016 to be DMV Donate Life California month. The Council encouraged residents to register as donors on licenses and RD cards. On April 30, California State University, Fullerton will be hosting a Donate Life Run/Walk. The Council also recognized Encore Teppan as the business of the month for 2016.

During the public comments, the public liaison from the LA County Fire Department thanked the City for the opportunity to teach students at Diamond Bar High School how to properly perform hands on CPR. A representative for the Diamond Bar Public Library announced several events, including a harp and violin duet that will be performed by members of the LA Philharmonic on April 30 at 2 p.m. The East San Gabriel Valley Coalition for the Homeless also requested the assistance of the City in future events to provide transitional housing for the homeless.

The schedule of future events was read, including an Earth Day celebration on April 23; a Planning Commission meeting on April 26; a Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on April 28; an Arbor Day celebration on April 29; and the next City Council meeting on May 3.

Finally, the Council approved all items on the consent calendar, including minutes from the City Council meeting of April 5; ratification of a check register totaling $1,176,416.83; a resolution adopting a restated 401 money purchase plan adoption agreement; authorization for the City Manager to purchase Hewlett Packard servers from CDWG; a maintenance services contract with DFS Flooring for the term of April 19, 2016 through June 30, 2019; and a contract to Control Air Conditioning Corporation for the City Hall server room HVAC replacement project.

Following the Council reports and comments, the Council adjourned to May 3, at 6:30 p.m. at 21865 Copley Dr.

Diamond Bar – Are you looking for a great volunteer experience in Diamond Bar?  Basically BOOKS, the Friends of the Diamond Bar Library two non-profit bookstores, are friendly places serving the community as a resource for school, work and pleasure reading at exceptionally low prices.  Bookstore Manager Peggy Murphy is actively looking for new volunteers to staff both locations at 23447 Golden Springs Road (near the intersection of Golden Springs and Diamond Bar Boulevard) and the bookstore at the Diamond Bar Library, 21800 Copley Drive (across from the AQMD Building).  All proceeds from both Basically BOOKS directly benefit the Diamond Bar Library.

There are many special sales throughout the month so stop by both of our beautiful locations.  Basically BOOKS gift certificates are available and make great birthday gifts.

The Diamond Bar Friends’ Book Group meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Basically BOOKS on Golden Springs.  The Tuesday, May 24 meeting will feature After Claire by Marjorie Eccles.  The June 28 selection will be Istanbul Passage by Joseph Kanon.  New members are always welcome.

Chaparral, South Pointe music programs receive national recognition

DIAMOND BAR— Two Walnut Valley Unified School District (WVUSD) middle schools – Chaparral and South Pointe – have been honored with the SupportMusic Merit Award from the nonprofit NAAM Foundation for outstanding commitment to music education.

A total of 118 schools across the country recognized with the prestigious award in 2016.

“This award puts Chaparral and South Pointe on an exclusive list that receives national attention – and that is something to celebrate!” said Chaparral band director Leslie Schroerlucke.

The SupportMusic designation is awarded to individual schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

The award recognizes schools that are leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the new federal education legislation, Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), that recommends music and the arts as important elements of a well-rounded education for all children.

Congratulations to Chaparral music teachers Greg Rochford-orchestra, Leslie Schroerlucke-band, Rich Langham-choir, South Pointe music teachers Susan Willmering- band, and Robin Wadsworth-choir.

“It is such an honor to be recognized for the second consecutive year by NAMM. It is fantastic to know that Chaparral is seen in such high regard,” said Principal Ron Thibodeaux.

“Our music programs are essential to our students and their families,” Schroerlucke added. “The NAMM award reaffirms once again that music programs in WVUSD are exemplary in terms of the number of students in our programs, the quality of the programs, and parent support.”

At South Pointe, over 500 students participate in music arts classes. Choir teacher Robin Wadsworth, who works with about 150 students in her classes, is passionate about the benefits of music education.

“There have been many scientific studies that show that music helps creativity, coordination, reasoning skills, and improving test scores,” she said.

Wadsworth also sites another benefit of being a part of music groups.

“Music performing groups give kids a place to belong. Playing, singing, or just listening to music relieves stress and gives groups of students that perform together a common purpose.”

Her students agreed. “Music makes me happy. When I’m sad, I sing!” said 6th grader Shannon Kelly.

“Music helps me express my feelings,” added 7th grader Maxine Magpayo.

“We are fortunate to have remarkable teachers and a district that understands the importance of the arts in education,” said South Pointe’s Principal, Susan Arzola.

DB High Ranked Best School

Diamond Bar – On Tuesday, April 19, the US News & World Report published their 2016 Best High Schools Report. Diamond Bar High School was once again ranked among the best schools in the state and the nation.

Diamond Bar High School was ranked 51st in California and 338th in the Nation. Their Magnet rank was 60th and their STEM rank was 98th. This means that they received Gold Medal Status out of 30,000 US high schools.

Diamond Bar High School’s student body makeup is 52 percent male and 48 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 89 percent, according to the US News website. In addition, the school’s data, district’s data, AP® participation rate, and test scores calculated on student performance were also listed.

Over 150 Tons of Carbon Emissions Eliminated Last Year

Diamond Bar – The City of Diamond Bar invites you to their annual Earth Day Celebration! The event will take place at the Air Quality Management District on April 23rd from 9 am to 1 pm. The Earth Day Celebration will provide the community with the opportunity to drop off unwanted electronic devices, textiles, and much more!

Last year, Diamond Bar set their new record of eliminating over 150 tons of carbon emissions at their Eco Expo. The Eco Expo took place on America Recycles Day, November 14th. Now, the City of Diamond Bar is looking to reach their goal of eliminating 200 tons of carbon emission on their Earth Day Celebration! In order to meet this new projected goal, “We decided to partner with All Green Electronics Recycling once again!” exclaimed Alfa Lopez, City of Diamond Bar Management Analyst. Last year, we chose to partner with All Green because “they made us feel that our event was in good hands during all communications and they have all of the required certifications within the E-Waste recycling industry.” Because All Green is an e-Stewards and R2 certified E-Waste recycler, the community could rest assured that no material collected would be sent overseas to developing nations or dumped into landfills.

This year’s Earth Day Celebration will include a garden mulch giveaway, e-waste recycling, and earth-friendly activities for children. Additionally, “this year, we are also super excited about our electric vehicle display and smart gardening workshop,” stated Lopez. Like always, the City takes extra measures to take care of its environment and provide essential resources to residents. Out of all the services provided at last year’s Eco Expo, electronic waste recycling was “the busiest service of that day!” said Ms. Alfa Lopez “and we hope to see more people attend.”
