The Mosquitoes Are Back
Beware of these critters!
Staff Reports
Ontario – The onset of warm weather has increased mosquito breeding in the West Valley. Vector Control surveillance has seen increased adult mosquitoes in their traps designed to catch females looking for a blood meal and those looking for a water source to deposit their eggs.
The West Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District warns residents that the breeding season is upon us, and preventing mosquito breeding in your backyard early will pay off in the long run! The District has sent reminder letters to residents to clean up pools and water sources now so they won’t have to worry about visits from mosquitoes or mosquito control technicians!
This is a perfect time to take a moment and remove those pesky critters from your yard. A few weeks ago, the District conducted aerial surveillance flights for suspect water sources in backyards in the northern portion of the district (Rancho Cucamonga, North Ontario, Montclair), and sent letters out to residents with neglected swimming pools shortly thereafter. Technicians visited homes to help reduce mosquito breeding threats throughout the following week.
The District reminds residents that the West Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District is a Public Health Agency, and its mission is to provide help and protection against mosquitoes and other vector-borne diseases. The District also provides mosquitofish, a small, guppy-like fish that residents can put in water sources such as ponds, fountains, and water gardens to control mosquito breeding.
The District is here to help with mosquito problems, and will even take anonymous calls regarding green pools or other mosquito breeding sources. It takes everyone’s participation to help fight mosquito-transmitted diseases, including West Nile Virus and Malaria.

Eastvale: Rocks and Rubies
As a new feature to the Eastvale Community News, we want to highlight the some of the good things, and a few of the frustrations that happen around Eastvale.
Do you know a person or a business that has stepped above and beyond to make the community a better place? Have you experienced something that you would like to change?
The following incidents are shared by members of our community, and are anonymous:
- RUBIES to Eleanor Roosevelt High School students, for choosing the beautiful Emily Huong as your homecoming Queen! You have shown the world what kind of heart this community has.
- RUBIES to the kind lady at Albertson’s, who randomly bought me flowers and gave them to me. I was having a horrible day and you brought a smile to my face.
- RUBIES to the kind stranger that took the time to tell me my disabled son was a “handsome, special little lad”. You made my heart smile.
- RUBIES to the Pet Patrol, for taking such good care of my dogs in this ungodly heat!
- RUBIES to the all the Eastvale Football teams who have played so hard in this heat! We love supporting you guys!
- RUBIES to the awesome guy in the black Chevy who paid for my Starbucks! I returned the favor and passed it on. You started a great trend that day.
- RUBIES to the kids I saw picking up the trash along Limonite. Great job, boys!
- ROCKS to the grey Honda who almost took out a bicyclist by Harada. Slow down! There are kids and adults that want to live.
- ROCKS to the landscaper who was spraying my lawn and making my poor dogs suffer after he swore he wasn’t doing anything.
- ROCKS to the gardener who just stopped showing up to take care of our lawn. Good customer service goes a long way.
If you are interested in sending in a “rock” or a “ruby,” please email them to Jennifer Madrigal at Jenniferanapr@hotmail.com.

Howell Resigns: Who Will Fill Her Seat?
By: Jennifer Madrigal
Eastvale – With the November 30 resignation of Eastvale City Council Member, Kelly Howell, the City must now make the difficult decision of how to fill her seat. According to the City’s existing ordinance, “If a vacancy occurs in a City Council seat, the City Council may, within thirty days from the commencement of the vacancy, fill the vacancy by appointment or call for a special election.” The cost of a special election could be up to $70,000, and with the next election season less than a year away it would seem that the best solution is for the council members to appoint someone to fill her spot until then.
The process of deciding who will fill her seat is one that requires thorough discussion and will ultimately be a tough decision. However, Mayor Bootsma feels that the logical decision will be to appoint someone to fill her spot. “Most likely we will have candidates send in resumes and hold interviews in January, with a decision being made by mid-January,” said Bootsma. The council member position and what action will be taken to fill her seat will be discussed in more detail at the December 11 City Council Meeting, held at Rosa Parks Elementary at 6:30 p.m.
Kelly Howell has served the City of Eastvale since 2010, and was part of the City’s first Council as well as the Incorporation Committee. She made the difficult decision to resign in order to spend more time with her two children. She is currently a Special Education teacher and in a Master’s Program, as well as serving as Assistant Director of the Eastvale Community Foundation. Howell has been an integral part of the thriving growth of Eastvale; she will be missed.
