Sheriff’s Golf Tourney A Success

Diamond Bar – Walnut and Diamond Bar Sheriffs stations recently held their annual Booster Club Golf Tournament. The tournament was a huge success and another testament to the support, both monetary and action-based, behind the station. Not only do the funds help generally, but the funds aid specifically the volunteer and auxiliary programs within the communities of service.

This support is vital to maintaining the safety of the public and continuing to sustain the communities as safe and enjoyable.

Thanks were made specifically to Booster Club President Gil Rivera, the Board of Directors, and the sponsors who donated generously. Thanks have also been given to all participants for the tournament’s great success.

Walnut, Diamond Bar – The Walnut-Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Booster Club will host a golf tournament in honor of former Diamond Bar Mayor Jack Tanaka on April 2, 2018. Tanaka passed away in August of last year after a battle with cancer. He spent 10 years as a city council member and mayor.

“Jack was always the first to contribute to our annual golf tournaments, always stopping by the booster club booth at the city birthday party, and a fervent supporter of the volunteers who serve at the Sheriff’s station,” said Booster Club President Gil Rivera.

Since 1987, the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Booster Club has provided thousands of dollars to the Reserve, Volunteer, Explorer, and Disaster Communication Services (DCS) programs for the Cities of Diamond Bar and Walnut, and the community of Rowland Heights, to finance needs not funded by the County, Cities, or the Sheriff’s Department.

“Each year we hold an annual golf tournament to raise funds for this event among other needs the department needs that are not on the budget from the county,” said Sheriff Booster President Gil Rivera ofwww.SellYourCasa.com. “They give generously of their time to help in many areas including patrol and vacation home checks, in addition to thousands of hours at sobriety check points and school traffic assistance

This cannot be accomplished without participation from local businesses, as well as individual citizens. Membership in the Booster Club helps ensure that needed funding for these auxiliary programs is available to help protect our communities and provide a high degree of safety for our citizens.

“Thousands of hours are donated annually by our department’s volunteers, explorers, reserves and disaster communication specialists,” Captain Alfred Reyes said in an earlier statement last year.  “From vacation checks and traffic control to color guard and keeping disaster communication equipment ready in case of emergency, these are a few of the many services they provide the community.”

If you would like to contribute and/or cannot attend and would like to donate, the Booster Club is looking for 150 minimum promotional product donations to help in honoring the volunteers.
The registration will be at 9:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and followed by a Shotgun Start of 11:15a.m. on  April 2 at the Western Hills Country Club, 1800 Carbon Canyon Rd., in Chino Hills. A luncheon will immediately follow the tournament.

Tanaka, was first elected in 2005, served twice as the city’s mayor and served on the City’s Planning Commission for more than three years. He said he wanted to spend more time with family, but will still remain active in the community who he considers family.
A retired U.S. Army Sergeant and former peace officer with the California Youth Authority and State Department of Corrections, Tanaka was first elected to the Diamond Bar City Council in 2005.
A constant fixture in the community, Tanaka and his wife Wanda devoted much of their time to helping out in the community especially youth. From the Miss Diamond Bar Pageant and the local Humane Society to community birthday parties and city concerts, the Tanaka’s were always there to lend a helping hand.
The Tanakas moved to Diamond Bar in 1976 and have since remained actively involved in community matters. In 2012, the couple was honored with Lions Clubs International’s Lion of the Year Award, the organization’s highest honor and usually given to only one person in the world. This is one of many reasons he has earned the honor of being recognized by the Sheriff’s annual event.

Suspect Arrested for Carrying a Loaded Firearm and Impersonating His Brother

A vehicle that was impeding traffic was spotted by the California Highway Patrol on a routine patrol on Fairway Dr. and the 60 Freeway at 8:18 am on August, 24, 2017. Officers stopped the vehicle and upon contact with the driver, noticed a handgun holstered on the suspect’s hip. The suspect claimed that he was a security guard. 

The suspect has been identified as Alejandro Raygoza, a 25 year old of the City of La Verne. Raygoza could face up to 1 year in county jail.

Reygoza provided an ID which he claimed was his, but deputies discovered upon questioning that the ID was actually the suspects brother’s. The suspect was not licensed to carry firearms.

The driver was arrested for carrying a loaded firearm and search of the vehicle yielded two loaded handguns, one shotgun, an expandable baton, pepper spray, four magazines, and a security guard badge.

Bail was set at $35,000 but with the help of a bail reduction personnel, the suspect was able to convince the commissioner to authorize a bail reduction to $25,000.

Raygoza paid the bail via bail bond and was released on the same day, August 24, at 11:45pm. Raygoza will be arraigned at Pomona Superior Court on October 24, 2017. 

Safety Tips From LASD

Walnut – As your Walnut Diamond Bar Sheriff Captain, I would like to encourage you to be proactive in your community as honorary “volunteers” in helping our community remain safe. We would like to promote a few safety tips you should find helpful:

1.      Don’t become a victim of mail theft.  Remove your mail from your mailbox promptly after delivery.  Enroll in the USPS Informed Delivery Program

2.      Keep your car doors locked and do not leave personal items such as back packs, laptop cases, and electronic devices in plain view. 

3.      Report suspicious vehicle and people who may be casing an area to commit a crime. 

4.      If you are considering installing a burglar alarm, be sure to place a sensor on upstairs bedroom sliding glass doors. 

5.      If you own a late 1990’s to early 2000 Honda or Toyota, consider installing an anti-theft device such as an audible alarm, kill switch or steering wheel lock.

6.      Utilize the vacation check program.  (Residence can request patrol checks of their property while on vacation).

7.      Get involved, join a Neighborhood Watch Program.         

These are simple tips that could help you avoid being a victim of a senseless and random crime. Keep an eye out for anything or anyone that may be an obvious sign of a crime or safety issue. Thanks for making this such a great community.

Avoiding Apartment Rental Scams

Walnut-Diamond Bar-The Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Department has offered the following tips when looking for apartments to avoid rental scams.
Finding an apartment can often be time consuming and emotionally frustrating. Time constraints and financial considerations can often place the apartment seeker in a vulnerable position where they can fall prey to Apartment Rental Scammers.
While Apartment Rental Scams come in a variety of schemes, they basically boil down to two types: Either the scammer has no authority to offer an existing apartment for rent or the scammer is trying to rent a fictitious apartment. In either case, the goal of the scammer is to get the victim to pay money upfront for a list of available apartments in the area or to arrange the rental of a particular apartment.

How Rental Scams Work
Scammers know that finding the right apartment or vacation rental can be hard work, and a seemingly good deal is hard to pass up. They’ve been known to game some vacation rental websites and bulletin boards. The take-away: when you’re looking for a rental, its caveat renter renter beware.
Hijacked Ads
Some scammers hijack a real rental or real estate listing by changing the email address or other contact information, and placing the modified ad on another site. The altered ad may even use the name of the person who posted the original ad. In other cases, scammers have hijacked the email accounts of property owners on reputable vacation rental websites.
Phantom Rentals
Other rip-off artists make up listings for places that aren’t for rent or don’t exist, and try to lure you in with the promise of low rent, or great amenities. Their goal is to get your money before you find out.
Signs of a Scam
Being savvy when you’re in search of a rental is well worth the effort. Here are some signs you may be dealing with a scam:
They tell you to wire money
This is the surest sign of a scam. There’s never a good reason to wire money to pay a security deposit, application fee, first month’s rent, or vacation rental fee. That’s true even if they send you a contract first. Wiring money is the same as sending cash once you send it, you have no way to get it back.
They want a security deposit or first month’s rent before you’ve met or signed a lease. It’s never a good idea to send money to someone you’ve never met in person for an apartment you haven’t seen. If you can’t visit an apartment or house yourself, ask someone you trust to go and confirm that it’s for rent, and that it is what was advertised. In addition to setting up a meeting, do a search on the owner and listing. If you find the same ad listed under a different name, that’s a clue it may be a scam.
They say they’re out of the country
But they have a plan to get the keys into your hands. It might involve a lawyer or an “agent” working on their behalf. Some scammers even create fake keys. Don’t send money to them overseas. If you can’t meet in person, see the apartment, or sign a lease before you pay, keep looking. What if the rental itself is overseas? Paying with a credit card or through a reputable vacation rental website with its own payment system are your safest bets.
How to Report Scams
If you find yourself the target of a rental scam, report it to your local law enforcement agency and to the FTC. Contact the website where the ad was posted, too.

Diamond Bar Welcome’s New Sheriff’s Captain

Diamond Bar-Walnut Sheriff’s Station has a new leader. Captain Al Reyes, a 32-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, took over command of the station this past October.

Captain Reyes’ career with the Sheriff’s Department began in 1984. After graduating from the Sheriff’s Academy as a Deputy Sheriff, he was assigned to the Hall of Justice Jail as a custody deputy, and then as a patrol deputy at both East Los Angeles and Norwalk Sheriff’s Stations. In November 2000, Captain Reyes was promoted to the rank of sergeant and supervised patrol functions at both Century and Lennox Sheriff’s Stations. He was also an Operations Sergeant at Norwalk Sheriff’s Station. Seven years later, Captain Reyes was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the Norwalk Sheriff’s Station where he worked as a shift watch commander and Service Area Lieutenant for the unincorporated areas of South and West Whittier. He also served as an Operations Lieutenant for Norwalk and Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Stations.

In 2015, Captain Reyes was assigned to Sheriff’s Headquarters where he served as the aide to the chief of East Patrol Division. Captain Reyes has an associate degree in liberal arts from Mt. San Antonio College, and is working toward a bachelor’s degree in leadership at Trident University International. The Diamond Bar-Walnut Sheriff’s Station serves Diamond Bar, Walnut, Rowland Heights and unincorporated areas of Covina Hills and West Covina.

Diamond Bar: Free Vacation Home Checks

Diamond Bar– Going on vacation this summer? The City of Diamond Bar encourages you to call Diamond-Bar Walnut Sheriff’s Station and add them as part of your pre-travel preparation.

The Sheriff’s Station will be offering free vacation checks for the days you will be out of town, which includes a Sheriff’s Deputy or trained Volunteer Patrol member who will perform a security inspection outside of your home. They will do inspections including: checking the doors and windows for signs of forced entry, and collection and disposing of unsolicited commercial flyers lying on the driveway or porches.

The Sheriff’s Station also suggests other ways to further protect your home while you are away including: postponing the delivery or your mail, have one of your neighbors pick up your mail or newspapers to prevent it from piling up, and installing exterior lights that operate on a dawn-to-dusk, or timer function to create the illusion that you are home.

Golf With Your Local Sheriffs In Chino Hills

CHINO HILLS – The Walnut-Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Booster Club will host a golf tournament in honor of the sheriff department’s 150 volunteers next month.
The tournament will begin at 11:30 a.m. April 4 at the Western Hills Country Club, 1800 Carbon Canyon Rd., in Chino Hills. A luncheon will immediately follow the tournament.

“Thousands of hours are donated annually by our department’s volunteers, explorers, reserves and disaster communication specialists,” Captain Jeff Scroggin said.  “From vacation checks and traffic control to color guard and keeping disaster communication equipment ready in case of emergency, these are a few of the many services they provide the community.”
Prizes for the longest drive, closest to the pin and hole-in-one will be awarded during the luncheon. The cost for a single player is $100. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

Diamond Bar Burglary Suspect At Large

The investigation continues after an extensive search went cold

Diamond Bar – The incident began around noon on Wed., Sept. 2 in Diamond Bar when Deputies from Walnut/Diamond Bar Station responded to a Burglary Just Occurred call in the 800 block of Pantera Drive.

The victim of the burglary gave Deputies a description of the suspect and the car he was driving.

According to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, while the Deputies were responding to the call, they saw the suspect driving the vehicle, as described by the victim, away from the residence.  At that time Deputies attempted to stop the suspect and when he did not yield, a pursuit ensued.  After approximately five minutes, the ground units terminated their part and a Sheriff’s Air Unit arrived overhead and monitored the pursuit from the air.

The suspect drove eastbound on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway, and continued to the northbound Orange (57) Freeway, west on the Foothill (210) Freeway, and south on the San Gabriel (605) Freeway, where he exited at Washington Boulevard in Pico Rivera.  The Air Unit had been surveilling the suspect the entire time.

Once the suspect left the freeway, he abandoned his vehicle and ran into the San Gabriel River wash. Deputies set up a containment perimeter and a Sheriff’s K-9 was brought to the scene to search for the suspect.  The wash is chock full of dense brush and covers an extensive area. Assisting with the search operation are Deputies from Pico Rivera and Walnut/Diamond Bar Stations, and California Highway Patrol personnel.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., the search operation for the burglary suspect concluded.  The suspect was not located; however Detectives are actively investigating his whereabouts.

WALNUT: Major Drop In Crime For Walnut-Diamond Bar

Walnut-Diamond Bar – The citizens of Walnut and Diamond Bar have cause to be very proud of their local law enforcement. The dedication and commitment they have shown for the people they have sworn to protect is very apparent in the latest crime statistics.

According to Captain Jeff Scroggin of the Walnut-Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Station, the area has shown significant decreases in crime rates. “The Part I crime rate for the entire area served by Walnut-Diamond Bar Station is down 25.79% as of April 16, 2014. The City of Walnut’s crime rate is down 46.5%. The City of Diamond Bar’s crime rate is down 27.9%, and the crime rate for the entire unincorporated areas served by our station is down 12.9%. Part I crime rates are based on the FBI’s Uniform Crime Index. The categories used for the FBI Uniform Crime Index are homicides, rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults, burglaries, larceny theft, grand theft auto and arson. The FBI uses these statistics to determine crime rates and these rates help us compare cities relative crime rates, and can help us determine which areas are the safest. It is always hard to place an exact cause on why crime rates go up and down because they always fluctuate based on the crime trends we face,” said Scroggin.

Scroggin also said that they have had some good fortune in seeing the categories of burglary and larceny theft rates lower in both of the contract cities and unincorporated areas. They have also made a number of excellent arrests related to burglary. The burglary and theft categories are typically the crimes that happen the most in the area and have the greatest impact on local crime rates.

“We usually have a very low incidence of any crimes classified as violent, such as homicide, rape, robbery and assault. Along with our contract cities, our station has been working hard to reenergize and increase our Neighborhood Watch program. This effort has been met with some renewed enthusiasm by all the communities we serve. Diamond Bar has supported a “Report for Reward” program to encourage residents to call whenever they believe criminal activity is occurring, and the City of Walnut also recently started a similar reward program. Diamond Bar has also hired an additional deputy to work on special problems within their community and the entire station is really focused on reducing the number of daytime residential burglary through increased patrols and greater community awareness of the crime trends facing our community,” Scroggin continued.

Captain Scroggin says that community involvement is the key in helping to keep crime rates low. He encourages everyone to become part of a Neighborhood Watch program, or even become a volunteer at the Sheriff’s Station to help with additional community patrols. The more the community is involved, the better they can be at keeping this area one of the safest in all of Southern California.
