Commercial Burglaries
Date: July 15, 2023
Location: Norco
Details: On July 15, 2023, at 2:24 a.m., deputies from the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to multiple commercial businesses in the 12500 block of Limonite Avenue, in the city of Eastvale and the 1400 block of Hamner Avenue in the city of Norco, regarding alarm activations which occurred within minutes of one another. Responding deputies discovered adjoining business at both locations were burglarized. Based on the initial investigation, it appears the incidents are related. The suspects are believed to be adult males who were both masked and gloved. This is an ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time.

Accidental Drowning
Date: June 30, 2023
Location: Jurupa Valley
Details: On June 30, 2023, around 4:28 p.m., deputies from the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to an accidental drowning at Rancho Jurupa Park in the 4800 block of Crestmore Road. Responding deputies learned that an adult male had entered the water and swam approximately thirty yards into the lake to retrieve a fishing rod. The male went underneath the water; however, witnesses stated he never resurfaced. Cal-Fire, Jurupa Valley Park Rangers, and Riverside Sheriff’s Helicopter Rescue 9 assisted with the search. The male was located by Rescue 9 and pulled ashore with the assistance of a Cal-Fire boat. Life-saving measures were performed; however, the male succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the male will be released by the Coroner’s Office upon notifying the next of kin.

Incident: Homicide
Date: June 17, 2023
Location: Norco

Details: On June 17, 2023, at about 7:04 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a report of an assault at a residence in the 300 block of Sixth St., Norco. Upon arrival, deputies were directed to a male subject at the side of the residence. The subject had traumatic injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Deputies secured the area as a crime scene and investigators from the Jurupa Valley Sheriff Station responded. The Central Homicide Unit also responded and assumed the investigation. The deceased victim’s identity will not be released pending notification to next of kin.
This investigation is currently on-going and no further information will be released at this time.
Update: The victim in this case was identified as Gabriel Diaz, 40-year-old resident of Norco. During the course of the investigation, several witnesses were interviewed and the scene was processed for evidence. The homicide occurred at Diaz’ residence. Investigators identified the suspect as Jaziel Valdez, 17-year-old resident of Norco. Valdez also uses an alias of Ivan Camacho. After the homicide occurred, Valdez stole a gray Chevrolet Silverado truck, CA license 6E80093, from Diaz’ residence.

Incident: Fatal Traffic Collision
Date: June 17, 2023
Location: Jurupa Valley
On Saturday, June 17, 2023, about 2:35 a.m., deputies from the Riverside Sheriff’s Jurupa Valley Station, responded to the report of a vehicle vs. pedestrian hit and run traffic collision at Market Street and 24th Street, in the city of Jurupa Valley. Deputies and Cal Fire arrived on-scene and located the victim on the northbound shoulder of Market Street. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Jurupa Valley Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation. There is no suspect in custody and it is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the collision.
The victim’s identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Incident: Shoplifters Arrested

Location: Eastvale
Details: Per the Jurupa Valley Station social media page, on May 28, 2023, Eastvale SET deputies conducted an enforcement operation at a retail location in the 12000 block of Limonite Ave., in the City of Eastvale. In a six hour span, six different offenders attempted to flee the retail store with stolen merchandise. All thieves were quickly apprehended and arrested.

Incident: Homicide
Date: May 9, 2023

Details: On May 9, 2023, at 3:30 pm, deputies from the Norco Station responded to a report of a juvenile medical aid at the 100 block of 8th Street in Norco. When deputies arrived, they found a female 17-month old juvenile not breathing. Life saving measures were conducted by deputies and Cal-Fire but the juvenile was unresponsive and was pronounced deceased. Investigators from the Jurupa Valley Station responded and believed the death to be suspicious. The Central Homicide Unit was contacted and responded to assume the investigation. The victim’s mother, Jennifer Johanna Allen, a 32-year old female from Norco, was later arrested for murder. During the course of the investigation, evidence was obtained showing fentanyl played a role in the juvenile’s death. Incident: Illegal Marijuana Dispensary
Date: May 4, 2023

Details: On Thursday, May 4, 2023, at 5:30 p.m., deputies from the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station Special Enforcement Team (SET) responded to the 1700 block of Production Circle regarding a disturbance. Upon deputies’ arrival, numerous subjects attempted to flee, but several were detained. Jurupa Valley SET deputies located evidence of an illegal/unlicensed marijuana dispensary and secured the location. Jurupa Valley SET deputies obtained a search warrant for the property and requested assistance from the Riverside Sheriff’s Marijuana Enforcement Team (MET).
During the service of the search warrant, deputies located approximately 115 pounds of processed marijuana, 10 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, 100 pounds of marijuana concentrate, 2,400 marijuana vapes, and 1,200 edible marijuana items. The estimated value of the seized items was determined to be over $1,000,000.

Incident: Retail Theft Investigation
Date: April 30, 2023
Location: Eastvale
Details: On April 30, 2023, at 1:33 p.m., deputies from the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to a business in the 12000 block of Limonite Avenue, in Eastvale, reference a theft. Witnesses reported four black females, in their 20’s, entered the business, filled bags with miscellaneous merchandise such as purses and clothing before attempting to leave the location. Prior to the suspects exiting the business, a bystander attempted to prevent them from leaving, and a physical altercation occurred. Prior to deputies arrival, the suspects fled the location with an estimated $1500 of stolen property.

Incident: Major Injury Traffic Collision
Date: April 29, 2023
Location: Eastvale
Details: On April 29, 2023, about 1:02 PM, deputies responded to the area of Archibald Avenue and Fairchild Drive, in the city of Eastvale, regarding a single-vehicle roll over traffic collision with the driver trapped inside the overturned vehicle. After removing the driver from the vehicle, he was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.
The Jurupa Valley Station Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Incident: Driving Under the Influence Traffic Collision
Date: April 29, 2023
Location: Jurupa Valley
Details: On April 29, 2023, about 5:27 PM, deputies responded to the 9900 block of Limonite Avenue, in the city of Jurupa Valley, regarding a minor injury traffic collision. Two of the parties from one vehicle sustained minor injuries. The first victim a 43-year-old female and her 13-year-old male passenger were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
During the investigation it was determined the second party had consumed alcohol prior to the collision. The suspect 45-year-old, Rafael De La Torre Jr., also a resident of Jurupa Valley was taken into custody and taken to a local hospital for treatment and subsequently booked into Robert Presley Detention Center for 23153 (a) CVC driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in injury.

Incident: Death Investigation
Date: April 22, 2023
Location: Norco
Details: On Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 2:57 p.m., deputies assigned to the Jurupa Valley Station responded to a parking lot located in the 3500 block of Hamner Avenue, Norco, to check on the welfare of a male who was seated in a Dodge van. When deputies arrived, they found a 58-year-old male seated in the vehicle and was unresponsive. Deputies entered the vehicle and determined he was deceased.
Investigators from the Jurupa Valley Station responded and assumed the investigation. During a search of the vehicle, investigators found a suicide note and a revolver. The decedent appeared to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest. The investigation is ongoing. Eastvale – Several thefts have taken place at nearby Eastvale businesses. However, the Eastvale Special Enforcement Team (SET) has done a great job investigating these incidents and arresting suspects.
In late 2022, Eastvale SET deputies began investigating a grand theft from a business located in the 12000 block of Limonite Avenue of Eastvale.
The suspect “walked into the store and grabbed as many items as she could and left the store with approximately $1,000 worth of product without paying,” stated a Riverside County Sheriff’s news release. For several months, “SET deputies tracked retail thefts and identified the unknown suspect to commit several grand thefts throughout the Inland Empire.”
SET deputies later identified the suspect as Gardenia Herrera, 31-year-old resident of Perris, and arrested her on March 5, 2023. Herrera was subsequently convicted and is serving a 4-year sentence.
Eastvale SET deputies continued this investigation working with local agencies and retail loss prevention members. They discovered several suspects linked to organized retail thefts throughout the Inland Empire. One of those suspects was Veronica Damian Estrada, a 39-year-old resident of Moreno Valley. Eastvale SET deputies arrested Estrada on April 26 in Moreno Valley.
Upon arrest, deputies located “several thousand dollars worth of stolen items in her vehicle,” stated a news release. “Deputies served a search warrant at Estrada’s residence and located thousands of stolen retail items estimated at $40,000 dollars in retail value. Estrada was subsequently booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center for several felony charges related to organized retail theft.”

Incident: Possession of a Replica Handgun on a School Campus
Date: April 13, 2023
Location: Jurupa Valley
Details: On Thursday, April 13, 2023, at 11:01 P.M., deputies from the Jurupa Valley Station were dispatched to the report of a possible school violence threat. Deputies were informed there was a photograph posted on social media that showed what appeared to be a student in possession of a firearm on the school campus. Deputies investigated this incident and identified the person in the photograph as a 14-year-old high school student. A search of the student’s residence was conducted. The firearm depicted in the photograph was located and determined to be a replica firearm. The juvenile was arrested and booked into Riverside County Juvenile Hall for possession of a replica firearm on a school campus.

Incident: Hate Crime Assault with a Deadly Weapon
Date: March 31, 2023
Location: Norco
Details: On March 31, 2023, at 5:55 P.M., deputies assigned to the Norco Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of two males fighting in a parking lot in the 3100 block of Hamner Avenue, Norco. Upon arrival, deputies located one of the males, who stated his wife had been struck by the suspect’s vehicle and fled the scene. Further investigation revealed an unidentified white male adult used racial slurs toward the victim and her family. The victim exited her vehicle to address what was being said, at which point the suspect continued to use racial slurs and threatened to assault the victim. The suspect struck the victim with his vehicle, and the victim’s husband exited their vehicle and struck the suspect in defense of his wife. The suspect fled from the area in a silver older model four-door vehicle on Hamner Avenue.
The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries to her lower legs and was treated at the scene by paramedics. Deputies and Investigators are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence to identify the suspect.

Incident: Drug Dealer Arrested

Details: On March 22, Eastvale patrol deputies and the Eastvale Special Enforcement Team (SET) responded to a call to investigate screams coming from a residence. When they got there, they stumbled on a drug dealer with a firearm. The suspect was arrested and booked. No one was found to be in distress.

Update: The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, Jurupa Valley Station/Eastvale, conducted a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) / Driver’s License checkpoint on Friday, March 17, 2023. The checkpoint was on Schleisman Rd., west of the intersection with Archibald Ave., between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. The checkpoint yielded the following results:

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired.
During the checkpoint, deputies will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The safety of our community is and always will be our mission. Driving under the influence is dangerous and puts a further strain on critical resources.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving.

Incident: Multiple Theft Suspects Arrested in Enforcement Operation
Location: Eastvale
Details: On Thursday, February 23rd, 2023, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office – Eastvale Special Enforcement Team conducted an enforcement operation aimed at combating retail theft near the 12500 block of Limonite Avenue, in the city of Eastvale. The purpose of the operation was to identify and arrest retail theft offenders. Deputies partnered with local retailers and loss prevention staff during the operation, which resulted in the arrests of nine suspects for various felony and misdemeanor charges. Stolen property was recovered, and criminal offender(s) were booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center.

Incident: Hit & Run Fatal Traffic Collision

Details: On February 16, 2023, about 6:35 PM, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, Jurupa Valley Station, responded to a fatal hit and run collision on Sumner Ave. and 68th Street, in the city of Eastvale.

Incident: Suspects involved in multiple Catalytic Converter Thefts Arrested
Location: Eastvale
Details courtesy of the Riverside Sheriff’s Department: During the last few months of the year 2022, multiple Riverside County residents were victims of catalytic converter thefts where the suspects brandished a firearm at victims to discourage them from interrupting their criminal activity. Deputies assigned to the city of Eastvale Special Enforcement Team worked tirelessly and cooperatively with several neighboring law enforcement agencies to include San Bernardino County agencies in attempts to locate and arrest the suspects.
The partnership with all agencies proved to be successful on January 17, 2023. During the early morning hours, a black Dodge Challenger became involved in a high-speed vehicle pursuit through several counties. The vehicle ultimately crashed, and two juvenile suspects were arrested. Deputies searched the vehicle and located an AR-15 rifle BB gun, floor jack, reciprocating saw and saw blades.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department would like to thank all the cooperating agencies who assisted in the investigation and apprehension of these suspects. It is without doubt the partnership and communication between agencies played a key role in this investigation.

Incident: Suspect released on bail
Location: Eastvale Details: Michael Marende was arrested for Sexual Battery in December after groping a woman in a business parking lot off Limonite Avenue. He was released from court on February 7. Official documents state he is on summary probation for 12 months, required to register as a sex offender, prohibited from being within 100 yards of 12660 Limonite Avenue in Eastvale (local Target), and cannot relocate from California.
Eastvale Crime Facebook pages are posting updates of his whereabouts to keep the community safe. They refer to him as “two-tone” due to his hair being two colors. Many residents have commented on posts that he has followed them or made remarks to women. Community members state he resides in the Heartland Community off Scholar Way and Limonite and walks in the area often. Anyone that experiences any uncomfortable encounters with him or sees him near the Target off Limonite, should call the Police as soon as possible.
Original report:
On December 21, 2022, deputies assigned to the city of Eastvale responded to a business in the 12500 block of Limonite Avenue regarding a report of a sexual battery. The victim informed deputies that an unknown male intentionally walked closely behind her and groped her as she was walking from the parking lot.
Based on the suspect description and store surveillance, deputies recognized the suspect as Michael Marende, a 32-year-old resident of Eastvale. Deputies attempted to contact the suspect close by the shopping center, but he fled from them and was not apprehended.
On December 22, 2022, deputies responded to a follow-up call regarding Marende loitering in the same area. Marende attempted to run away from the deputies, but was detained and arrested. Marende was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for Sexual Battery.

Eastvale – Two Riverside County Sheriff Deputies were killed in the line of duty within the last month. The first was Deputy Isaiah Cordero who was fatally shot on December 29, 2022, and the second was Deputy Darnell Calhoun who was fatally shot on January 13, 2023. Prior to these incidents, the last time a Riverside County Deputy was killed in the line of duty was in 2003, according to Sheriff Chad Bianco during a press conference.
On Dec. 29, shortly after 2 pm, Deputy Cordero initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 3900 block of Golden West Ave. in Jurupa Valley. As Deputy Cordero approached the vehicle, the driver pulled out a gun, shot Deputy Cordero, then fled the scene. A witness called 911 and nearby residents attempted to assist Deputy Cordero until law enforcement and paramedics arrived, according to Sheriff Bianco. Law Enforcement from Riverside County and San Bernardino County began a massive manhunt and located the suspect in San Bernardino County. A vehicle pursuit continued to Jurupa Valley off the 60 and 15 freeway. The pursuit ended with a single car accident and a shootout, where the suspect was fatally killed. Deputy Cordero passed away that afternoon.
The suspect was later identified as William Shea McKay, who had an extensive criminal history and was arrested three times prior. However, during his last trial, the judge lowered his bail and allowed him to be released twice, according to Sheriff Bianco. His bail should have been 25 years to life, he added.
Deputy Isaiah Cordero, age 32, was an 8-year veteran of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. He started as a correctional deputy at Robert Presley Detention Center in 2014 and continued at the Larry Smith Correctional Center and Indio Jail. He became a Deputy Sheriff in 2018 and was transferred to the Jurupa Valley Station in 2020. “Deputy Cordero learned from his mother the value of serving and helping others. His goal from the day he was hired was to become a motor deputy,” said Sheriff Bianco. “He was a jokester around the station, and all of our deputies considered him their little brother.”
Deputy Cordero is survived by his parents. His funeral service and procession took place on Friday, January 6 in Riverside.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department posted the following: “We are humbled by the tremendous show of support yesterday as we laid Deputy Isaiah Cordero to rest. From members of the public lining the streets, to the thousands who attended the service both in person and online, to the immense show of law enforcement agencies from across the country, your presence over the past week has kept us going. To the Cordero family: we promise to keep Isaiah’s memory alive. You are forever a part of the tan and green family.”

On the evening of Jan. 13, Deputy Darnell Calhoun answered a domestic violence call in the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane, near Lake Elsinore. Deputy Calhoun was the first to arrive, but law enforcement is unsure about the initial contact. Deputy Calhoun was found wounded in the street by the second Deputy to arrive, according to Sheriff Bianco at a press conference. A gunfight between the suspect and the second Deputy ensued. The suspect was hit, treated at the scene, and transported to the hospital. The suspect is in critical condition and was later identified as Jesse Navarro, 42, of Lake Elsinore. Deputy Calhoun passed away that evening.
Deputy Calhoun served as a Police Officer for the San Diego Police Department for two years and began at the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in February 2022.
“Deputy Calhoun’s character as an encourager, a protector and a mentor embodied the Service Above Self pride of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department,” stated the Help A Hero website. “His relationship, love and service to Jesus Christ emboldened his impact on the many walks of life he encountered.”
“Deputy Calhoun, 30, was a husband, a father of two young boys (ages 2 and 4), and a third baby boy on the way. Darnell loved and served Jesus with his church community joyfully. He will be remembered as a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin, a son-in-law, a brother-in-law, and a loyal friend. “
On Jan. 17, the City of Lake Elsinore hosted a candlelight vigil in honor of Deputy Darnell Calhoun. Hundreds of people gathered to remember the Deputy and mourn together as a community. An additional vigil was held on Jan. 18 in the City of Murrieta at the Town Square Park Amphitheater.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office released the following message on behalf of the Calhoun family:
“Since the tragic loss of Darnell, our family has received an outpouring of love and support from our community for which we are immensely grateful. While we are heartbroken, we also celebrate the gift of Darnell – the husband, father, son, brother, and deputy. His life, though cut short, is a blessing. Our faith in Jesus will carry us through this and we know we will be reunited with Darnell once again. His life, his commitment and dedication to his family and his community will remain an inspiration. He was genuine, kind, loyal, and had the heart of a servant. We take great comfort in knowing that Darnell led a life well lived. We are grateful to our community, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, and law enforcement agencies around the country that have uplifted us.
While we respect and are thankful and grateful for the community, we ask that the media respect our privacy during this difficult time. Thank you for your continued love and prayers.”

Incident: Sexual Battery

Details: On December 21, 2022, deputies assigned to the city of Eastvale responded to a business in the 12500 block of Limonite Avenue regarding a report of a sexual battery. The victim informed deputies that an unknown male intentionally walked closely behind her and groped her as she was walking from the parking lot.
Based on the suspect description and store surveillance, deputies recognized the suspect as Michael Marende, a 32-year-old resident of Eastvale. Deputies attempted to contact the suspect close by the shopping center, but he fled from them and was not apprehended.
On December 22, 2022, deputies responded to a follow-up call regarding Marende loitering in the same area. Marende attempted to run away from the deputies, but was detained and arrested. Marende was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for Sexual Battery.

Incident: Suspects Arrested in Commercial Burglary
Location: Eastvale
Details: On December 3, 2022, at 12:00 PM, deputies assigned to the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station began a burglary investigation at a business in the 6300 block of Archibald Avenue in Eastvale. Deputies learned the victim suffered a house flood and stored their entire life valuables at this business. Property valued at over $100,000 dollars had been stolen.

Deputies assigned to the Eastvale Special Enforcement Team (SET) assumed the investigation and through various investigative means, identified two suspects responsible for burglary. The investigation led SET deputies to another business in the city of Buena Park. A search warrant was served at the business and several thousand dollars worth of various stolen property was recovered and returned to the victim.
On December 8, 2022, while continuing to investigate the burglary, SET deputies and Riverside County Sheriff investigators served a search warrant at a home in the city of Lakewood. During the warrant, Randy Erickson, a 34-year-old resident of Lakewood, was arrested for his involvement in the burglary.

On December 11, 2022, officers assigned to the city of Seal Beach Police Department assisted SET deputies in locating an additional suspect, Daniel Ray Hendrix, a 34-year-old resident of Jurupa Valley. Hendrix was found and arrested in the city of Seal Beach for his involvement in the Eastvale burglary. At the time of his arrest, Hendrix was found to be in possession of an unregistered firearm, along with methamphetamine.
Both suspects were booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center for several felonies. Deputies were able to recover and return some of the stolen property to the victim. Many additional items have yet to be found.

Incident: Checkpoint

Details: The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Jurupa Valley Station/Eastvale, conducted a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) / Driver’s License checkpoint on Friday, December 16, 2022. The checkpoint was on Limonite Ave., west of the intersection with Hamner Ave., between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. The checkpoint yielded the following results:
807 vehicles screened
64 vehicles screened in secondary inspection
6 Field Sobriety Tests (FSTs) conducted
2 arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol
1 arrested for driving under the influence of drugs
3 arrested for driving with a suspended driver’s license
12 citations issued for driving without a driver’s license

On October 17, 2022, at 12:14 AM, deputies from the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of a shooting at a residence in the 12000 block of Craigburn Circle in Eastvale. Upon arriving, deputies located two males suffering from gunshot wounds. One male was pronounced deceased at the scene and the other male was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care. A crime scene was secured and the Central Homicide Unit responded to assume the investigation. The identities of the victims are being withheld pending next of kin notification. There are no suspects outstanding and the investigation is on-going.
Update: The victim in this case has been identified as Kelvin Jackett, a 51-year-old male resident of Eastvale. The investigation is on-going.

The process of converting a residence into an indoor marijuana nursery in the City of Eastvale is not only illegal under California law but it also brings hefty fines from city Code Enforcement. Additionally, the amount of electricity used to operate an indoor marijuana nursery not only poses a fire danger to the home, but places neighboring homes in danger who share the same power box. Residential power lines were not designed to draw 15 times the amount of power compared to the consumption of a normal family household.
To put all this into perspective, the Eastvale SET team recently served a search warrant at [an Eastvale] residence and located an indoor marijuana nursery. The occupants of the home were arrested for felony charges and the home owners were provided with a hefty $250,000 fine from Code Enforcement. As far as the amount of power draw from this home, the electricity bills ranged between $5,000 and $6,000 per month. That’s a lot of power!
The Eastvale SET team highly discourages anyone from operating and indoor marijuana nursery in the City of Eastvale. October is National Pedestrian Safety Month and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department—Jurupa Valley Station, will raise awareness about the safety of people walking throughout the month, emphasizing that “safe drivers, safe speeds and safe vehicles save lives.”
“Whether in a parking lot, crosswalk, or sidewalk, we are all pedestrians at one point,” Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s Deputy Richard Comstock said. “Drivers, please slow down and be extra careful around people walking. Put yourself in their shoes and drive how you would want someone to drive when you are walking.”
The safety of people outside of vehicles is a significant traffic safety concern, with at least two pedestrians or bicyclists killed on California roads every day. Between 2010 and 2019 in California, pedestrian deaths increased more than 40 percent and bicyclist deaths went up more than 60 percent. In 2020, 6,516 pedestrians were killed in the United States an average of 18 pedestrians a day and one pedestrian killed every 81 minutes.
Speeding, poor lighting, mid-block crossing and impairment are the main factors in pedestrians being struck by vehicles.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department—Jurupa Valley Station, offers the following safe driving and walking tips:
Drivers
Do not speed and slow down at intersections. Be prepared to stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
Avoid blocking crosswalks while waiting to make a right-hand turn.
Never drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Pedestrians
Use signalized crosswalks where drivers expect foot traffic.
Watch for approaching vehicles and be careful crossing the street, especially busier streets with higher speed limits. At 30 mph, a driver needs at least 90 feet to come to a stop.
Get in the habit of wearing light colors, reflective material, and walking with a flashlight at night so it is easier for drivers to see you.

INCIDENT: Armed Robbery Suspect Wanted
Location: Eastvale
Details: On Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at 11:28 pm, Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s station deputies responded to a robbery in the 7000 block of Archibald Avenue, in the city of Eastvale. The victim reported a male entered the business, brandished a firearm, and demanded cash from the register. The victim complied and the suspect fled on foot, southbound on Archibald Avenue.
The suspect is described as a black male adult, approximately 5’09” tall, weighing 120 pounds, last seen wearing all black clothing, with a dark colored hooded mask covering his face. Anyone with information regarding this incident, please contact Deputy Picon at (951) 955–2600.

INCIDENT: Suspects Arrested in Multiple Retail Thefts from Several Jurisdictions
Location: Eastvale
Details: On August 24, 2022, deputies assigned to the city of Eastvale Special Enforcement Team and Jurupa Valley Special Enforcement Team served a search warrant at a residence located in the 900 block of Leonard Lane, San Jacinto. The search warrant stemmed from a grand theft investigation that originated from a retail business in the city of Eastvale. Deputies followed up on leads and identified David Gonzalez (47 year-old-resident of San Jacinto) and Ronald Natac (51-year-old resident of San Jacinto) as the suspects. Deputies learned both suspects had committed several other grand thefts in the cities of Corona, Hemet, San Bernardino and Riverside. Upon service of the search warrant, evidence of the grand thefts was located. Both Gonzalez and Natac were booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center for grand theft and conspiracy to commit grand theft.

INCIDENT: Suspect arrested in Dangerous Butane Honey Oil Extraction Laboratory
Location: Eastvale
Details: On August 17, 2022, deputies assigned to the City of Eastvale Special Enforcement Team worked jointly with the Riverside County Marijuana Enforcement Team (MET) and the Riverside County Fire Department Hazardous Material Team, to serve a search warrant at a residence located in the 12000 block of Norwegian Street in Eastvale. The search warrant stemmed from an anonymous “We-Tip” providing information about Ronald Brett Lilly operating a highly explosive butane honey oil extraction laboratory from his residence. Upon service of the search warrant, investigators located a volatile butane honey oil extraction laboratory. The laboratory needed to be depressurized and safely dismantled by specially trained personnel. Also located in the residence, were hazardous chemicals, several pounds of marijuana, a handgun, and several thousand dollars in cash. Lilly was subsequently arrested and booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center for various felonies.

INCIDENT: Shooting Suspect Arrested
Location: Norco
Details: On August 10,2022, about 11:13 A.M., deputies from the Norco Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of a shooting inside a residence in the 4400 block of Valley View Avenue in the city of Norco. Upon arrival, deputies located a male adult suffering from a gun shot wound. The victim was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
While at the residence, deputies detained an adult male determined to be involved in the shooting. Investigators from the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station responded and assumed the investigation. Preliminary investigation revealed this incident was the result of a family dispute involving parties that lived at the location. Gary Haneline, a 78-year-old resident of Norco, was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for assault with a firearm.

INCIDENT: Threat of Workplace Violence
Location: Eastvale
Details: On July 19, 2022, deputies from the Jurupa Valley Station responded to a business in the 5000 block of Goodman Way in the city of Eastvale, regarding a threat of workplace violence. Deputies learned an employee at the business, later identified as Steven Schultz, a 43-year-old resident of Apple Valley, made concerning statements of violence to several other employees. Deputies arrived to the business and arrested Schultz without incident. A search warrant was prepared and executed at Schultz’s residence in Apple Valley. Multiple un-serialized firearms, known as “ghost guns”, were located, along with high capacity magazines and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Preliminary investigative findings suggest Schultz was manufacturing ghost guns at his residence. Schultz was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center and charged with numerous felony violations, to include criminal threats and weapons charges. He is being held in lieu of $1,000,000 bail.
This incident is an excellent example of the “See Something, Say Something” philosophy and how critical it is to report suspicious activity to law enforcement. The actions taken by the suspect’s co-workers were instrumental in this case. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is committed to safeguarding the communities we proudly serve. Norco – The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Norco Station, conducted a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) enforcement operation within the city of Norco on July 1 and July 9.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department wants to remind the public about the importance of being safe and sober when you are driving. They provided the below statement:
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is dedicated to keeping the public safe and urges people to stay at home or use a designated sober driver if you plan to drink.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana can also impair, especially in combination with alcohol and other drugs. Do your research and understand how certain drugs you are taking may affect your driving ability.
Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about “driving” or “operating heavy machinery,” which includes driving a vehicle. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence is not.
If you plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying at home.
Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, and a suspended license.
Funding for these operations is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

INCIDENT: Drive-By Shooting
INCIDENT DATE: May 22, 2022; update June 1, 2022
WHERE: Eastvale
Details:
On Sunday, May 22, 2022, at 6:08 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a shooting in the 6500 block of Red Oak Drive in the City of Eastvale. Upon arrival, deputies learned that a vehicle drove down the street, and an occupant from inside the car fired numerous rounds at an occupied residence. The gunfire struck no victims; however, several vehicles parked in the driveway sustained significant damage.
Update as of June 1: Jurupa Valley Station Investigators continued the shooting investigation. During follow-up interviews, investigators learned the shooting stemmed from an internal family dispute, and the suspect, Juan Huerta, was identified. On June 1,2022, Jurupa Valley Station investigators and Special Enforcement Team members served a search warrant in the 2900 block of Missouri Avenue in the City of South Gate. A handgun and numerous live rounds of ammunition were seized. Subsequently, Juan Huerta was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for negligent discharge of a firearm where his bail has been set at $500,000.

INCIDENT: Copycat Threats

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department made the following announcement on May 26:
We have been made aware of “copycat threats” in the wake of the tragic school shooting in Texas.
Please be assured that our Department works diligently to identify specifics on each incident and has not been able to confirm any credible threats.
Deputy presence has been increased at school events and will continue for the remainder of the school year.
The safety and security of our children is our top priority, and these copycat incidents are not taken lightly.
Eastvale – The City of Eastvale Public Works team and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department recently met to discuss the possible installation of radar speed signs in the City. “Radar speed signs are traffic signs that alert drivers of their speed when driving by, helping them stay within the speed limit,” stated the City.
Both teams meet every month to discuss “safety concerns, traffic concerns, traffic count updates, community feedback, and more,” according to the City. The Eastvale Public Works Team is committed to the maintenance and operation of the City of Eastvale’s infrastructure, according to the City website.
In the past, many residents have expressed their concern of speeding taking place throughout the community. Therefore, the potential speed signs may be a possible solution to the current issue.
However, when the City posted on their social media about the speed signs, many residents commented against them saying they wouldn’t fix the problem. Many suggested other solutions such as cameras, speed bumps, and more law enforcement.
Mayor Pro Tem Todd Rigby also commented on the post stating, “Part of the purpose of speed radar signs is to collect data (speed mph, time of day, frequency, etc.). This data helps law enforcement deploy traffic enforcement appropriately throughout the day and throughout the city.”
In addition, many studies have shown that radar speed signs can be effective. According to radarsign.com, “studies repeatedly show that when alerted by a radar sign, speeders will slow down up to 80% of the time. Typical average speed reductions are 10-20%, and overall compliance with the posted speed limit will increase by 30-60%.” However, many still have their doubts.
This topic was discussed at the last meeting, but no decisions have been announced by the City or the Public Works team.

INCIDENT: $6,500.00 Worth of Stolen Property Recovered During Theft Investigation
INCIDENT DATE: April 18, 2022
WHERE: Norco
DETAILS: On April 18, 2022, deputies responded to a business located in the 1100 Block of 6 Street, Norco, regarding a grand theft investigation. During the investigation, it was determined the suspect entered the property of the closed business, and stole numerous items used in agricultural and animal husbandry. Since the initial theft investigation, additional grand thefts were reported from the additional business in the 1200 Block of 6th Street, Norco.
The Norco Special Enforcement Team (SET) assumed the investigation and identified the suspect as Juan Ayala Flores, a 36-year-old resident of Anaheim. On May 10, 2022, Norco SET deputies located and detained Flores in the city of Norco. A search warrant was served at a residence in the 4100 block of Hillside Avenue, Norco. During the service of the search warrant, over $6,500.00 worth of stolen property related to the thefts was located. Deputies also recovered numerous tools and construction items that are believed to be stolen. Flores was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for grand theft and possession of stolen property.

INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision INCIDENT DATE: March 4, 2022 WHERE: First Street east of Parkridge Avenue, Norco DETAILS: On Friday, March 4, 2022, about 11:09 PM, deputies assigned to the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to the area of First Street east of Parkridge Avenue, Norco, regarding a major-injury traffic collision. When deputies arrived, they found the collision involved a single vehicle and a pedestrian. The pedestrian was found unresponsive and ultimately succumbed to injuries sustained during the collision at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured during the traffic collision, remained on-scene and cooperated with the investigation. The Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. The cause of the collision is still under investigation and alcohol and/or drugs does not appear to be a factor. The identity of the pedestrian will not be released at this time, pending notification to the next of kin. The collision investigation required the temporary closure of First Street, between Parkridge Avenue and Mountain Avenue in order to process the scene and collect evidence. INCIDENT: Fentanyl Sales Arrest INCIDENT DATE: March 2, 2022 WHERE: Various locations in the city of Eastvale, Norco, Jurupa Valley, Riverside and Corona DETAILS: In December of 2021, Amanda Listoe (31-year-old resident of Ontario) was arrested in the City of Eastvale for possession fentanyl pills for sales. After her release from custody, deputies assigned to the Eastvale Special Enforcement Team (SET) developed information that Listoe continued to sell fentanyl and other illegal narcotics throughout the cities of Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, Norco, Riverside and Corona. Gustavo Chavez (32-year-old resident of Ontario) was identified as a co-conspirator engaged in the sales of fentanyl with Listoe. On Tuesday, March 1, 2022, Eastvale SET deputies contacted Listoe and Chavez in the city of Norco. A subsequent search of their person and vehicle revealed a significant amount of fentanyl pills, methamphetamine and items indicative of the sales of controlled substances. Listoe and Chavez were arrested and booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center for illegal narcotic sales. On March 3, 2022, deputies served a narcotics search warrant at Listoe and Chavez’ residence in the 3200 block of Yellowstone Drive, city of Ontario. Deputies located fentanyl pills, methamphetamine and items indicative of the sales of controlled substances. Listoe and Chavez were charged with additional charges related to narcotic sales while in custody. INCIDENT: Illegal Marijuana Cultivation INCIDENT DATE: January 3, 2022 WHERE: 14000 Block of Viva Drive, Eastvale DETAILS: On Monday, January 3, 2022, deputies assigned to the Eastvale Special Enforcement Team served a search warrant at a residence in the 14000 block of Viva Drive in the City of Eastvale. The search warrant stemmed from an illegal marijuana cultivation investigation. During the service of the warrant, the home was discovered to have been completely transformed into a greenhouse which contained a large number of mature marijuana plants. This type of work is consistent with the work performed by large scale illegal marijuana cultivation organizations. Deputies learned the electricity used to power the growing equipment was being stolen. A Southern California Edison representative estimated the theft of electricity to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. INCIDENT: Lewd Acts with a Minor INCIDENT DATE: December 1, 2021 WRITTEN DATE: January 7, 2022 WHERE: 3200 block of Belgian Drive, Norco DETAILS: On Wednesday, December 1, 2021, about 7:14 P.M., deputies responded to a call for service regarding an alleged child molestation in the city of Norco. It was reported the victim attended Montessori School of Corona, which is a private elementary school, which is where the victim met the suspect, Allyson Berndsen, a 31-year-old resident of Norco. Berndsen was employed at the school as a teacher’s aide. Berndsen also provided babysitting services for the victim at a residence in the city of Norco. The investigation was assumed by the Jurupa Valley Station’s Detective Bureau. After a thorough investigation, it was determined that a crime had been committed. On Thursday, January 6, 2022, Jurupa Valley Station detectives arrested Berndsen at her place of employment and a search warrant was served at her residence. Berndsen was later booked into Robert Presley Detention Center for 288 (a) PC (Lewd Acts with a Minor Child under 14) and additional charges This is an on-going investigation and no other information will be released at this time. INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision INCIDENT DATE: November 23, 2021 WHERE: Bellegrave Ave. and Jamestown Ave., Eastvale DETAILS: On Tuesday, November 23, 2021, about 3:03 P.M., deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Jurupa Valley Station, responded to the report of a major injury traffic collision located at Bellegrave Avenue and Jamestown Avenue, in the city of Eastvale. Upon arrival they located an unknown adult male with obvious signs of death. The Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation. Preliminary investigation indicated the driver of a silver, 2006 Toyota Avalon was traveling eastbound on Bellegrave Avenue and veered onto oncoming traffic and collided with a white, 2009 Freightliner Cascadia which was traveling westbound on Bellegrave Avenue. The driver of the Freightliner suffered no injury and cooperated with the investigation. At this time, it remains unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the collision. Bellegrave Avenue between Scholar Way and Hamner Avenue were closed for the duration of the investigation. The identities of the involved parties will not be released pending further investigation and the notification to next of kin. INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision INCIDENT DATE: November 17, 2021 WHERE: Norco Hills Rd. and Valley Dr., Norco DETAILS: On Wednesday, November 17, 2021, about 2:11 A.M., deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Jurupa Valley Station, responded to a single-vehicle traffic collision near the intersection of Norco Hills Road and Valley Drive, in the city of Norco. Upon arrival, deputies located a male adult, who had been ejected from the vehicle. The driver had suffered life-threatening injuries and was declared deceased at the scene by paramedics and Cal Fire personnel. He was determined to be the sole occupant. The Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation. Preliminary investigation indicated the driver was traveling eastbound on Norco Hills Road and collided into a brick column. Norco Hills Road and Valley Drive were closed for the duration of the investigation. The identities of the involved party will not be released pending further investigation and the notification to the next of kin. At this time, it remains unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the collision. INCIDENT: Homicide INCIDENT DATE: November 9, 2021 WHERE: 6400 Block of Wells Springs Street city of Eastvale DETAILS: On November 9, 2020, about 2:46 PM, Jurupa Valley Station Deputies were dispatched to a call of an unresponsive male adult in the 6400 block of Wells Springs Street, city of Eastvale. Upon deputies arrival, it was determined a 19 year old male adult was deceased. Through extensive investigation by investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Overdose Death Investigations and Narcotics Unit, it was determined the decedent, Javon Richard, was a victim of homicide due to a Fentanyl overdose. The investigation was worked tirelessly over the next several months and a suspect, Alvin Linton (36) from the city of Ontario, was responsible for selling the Fentanyl that killed Richard. On November 17, 2021, Linton was located and taken into custody without incident and booked for Murder. This investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Investigator Hollingsworth at 951-955-1700. As a reminder, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department wants to remind citizens of the dangers of illicit narcotics many which may contain Fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 100 times stronger than morphine and can cause death or serious bodily harm. INCIDENT: Attempted Murder INCIDENT DATE: October 30, 2021 WHERE: 1600 Block of Valley View, Norco DETAILS: On October 30, 2021, at 3:04 AM, deputies assigned to the Norco Station were dispatched to a residence in the 1600 Block of Valley View Avenue reference an assault with a deadly weapon. When deputies arrived, they located an adult male victim with numerous stab wounds. Deputies rendered medical aid to the victim until medical personnel arrived. The victim was transported by ambulance to a local area hospital for emergency medical treatment. The Norco Special Enforcement Team assumed the investigation. Deputies identified the suspect as Ethan Melnikoff, a 19-year-old resident from Riverside. On November 3, 2021, with the assistance of the Sheriff’s Department Special Investigations Bureau, a search warrant was served at the suspect’s residence where additional evidence was located. Melnikoff was arrested without incident and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for attempted murder.
