Chino Valley YMCA Reindeer Romp

Chino- On December 3, the Annual Chino Valley YMCA Reindeer Romp event was at Ayala Park in Chino. They had the 5k and the 1/4 mile Kid’s run (8 and under only).

The 5k is the first leg of the Chino Triple Crown – participate in the Chino Valley YMCA Reindeer Romp 5k, Run for Russ (February 4, 2017) and the DairyAire (March 4, 2017) and receive a special Triple Crown medal!

All entrants in the 5k and kid’s run received a long-sleeve shirt and finisher medal.

The Kid’s 1/4 mile (8 and under only) started at 8:00 am, Chino Valley YMCA Reindeer Romp 5k started at 8:15 am

There was also a costume contest, Participants wore their best holiday wear and competed for a special prize.

The Chino Police Department also participated in the Chino Valley YMCA Reindeer Romp; Captain Simmons, Corporals McArdle and Carrino, and Officers Franks and Officer Gray took 1st in his division! Chino PD commented on their facebook saying, “Congrats to all of the participants and thank you to the YMCA for hosting such a great community event.”

Drug Lab Leads to Explosion

CHINO, CA – On Sunday November 27, 2016 at approximately 1:55 p.m. Chino Police Officers and Chino Valley Firefighters responded to a report of a residential fire in the 4900 block of G Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered that an explosion had occurred in the back of the residence.  The fire was extinguished prior to the officers’ arrival.

Located at the residence was 20-year-old Chino resident, Adrian Corona who was suffering from severe burn injuries to his face and upper body.

The investigation revealed the source of the explosion as a Butane Honey Oil (BHO) extraction laboratory used to manufacture marijuana hash oil. Investigators from the Chino Police Department and the Chino Valley Fire District quarantined the area and processed the scene once investigators determined it was safe to enter.

Emergency personnel closed G Street for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

Corona was transported to an area hospital with severe burn injuries. Investigators are seeking charges against Corona for his involvement in drug manufacturing.

Annual Tree Lighting and Holiday Events

Chino – Chino Mayor Yates will “flip the switch,” one final time at the annual tree lighting ceremony on the City Hall lawn on Tuesday, December 6, 2016.

Prior to the tree lighting ceremony, a reception will be held at 5:45 p.m. in the City Hall Lobby for outgoing Mayor Dennis Yates.  The community is invited to attend and extend their well wishes as the Mayor embarks on retirement.

At 6 p.m. the annual Tree Lighting ceremony will begin.  Kicking off the tree lighting is Chino Community Chorus, a crowd favorite, who will be singing holiday classics.  Santa, will also make a special guest appearance and will be available for pictures.   Light holiday refreshments will be served.   The tree lighting ceremony marks the beginning of the holiday season in Chino.

In December, Santa’s Sleigh begins making its way through the city. Santa’s Sleigh is a program of the Chino Police Officer’s Association and gives youth the opportunity to experience the magic of Christmas.  This program gives families the opportunity to take pictures with Santa, interact with police officers, and visit with Santa’s Sleigh riders. This is truly a memorable experience for Chino youth. The sleigh will travel through neighborhoods during the month of December. Dates, neighborhoods and times of the Santa Sleigh Program are yet to be published.

On December 10, the beloved Chino Youth Christmas Parade and Fair will take place. The Parade will step off from Yorba Avenue and Riverside Drive at 9 a.m. and continue east on Riverside Drive before heading south on Central Avenue, ending near City Hall.  The parade features classic cars, horse drawn carriages, school bands and local youth organizations.

The Fair, free to the public, is located at the Civic Center and will start at the conclusion of the Parade.  This fair features craft and food vendors, carnival rides and entertainment. At noon, the Mayor will announce the Christmas parade float winners.

Join CVFD in Spreading Holiday Cheer

The Chino Valley Fire District asks the public to join our firefighters in spreading holiday cheer through the annual Spark of Love Toy Drive. Off-duty Chino Valley Fire personnel will be collecting toys at their annual toy drive event on Saturday December 3, 2016 and Sunday December 4, 2016, from 8am to 5pm in front of Wal-Mart in the City of Chino (3943 Grand Avenue). The Chino Valley Fire Professional Firefighters Union will offer free photos with Santa Claus from 10am to 4:30pm during the toy drive. All new, unwrapped toys and sports equipment collected during the toy drive will be distributed to local charities serving the Cities of Chino and Chino Hills.

CVFD will continue collecting donations at all seven fire stations and Fire Administration through December 24, 2016, in partnership with ABC 7’s Spark of Love Toy Drive.

Each year, we receive many donations for young children, but are always short on items for children between the ages of 11 and 18. Suggested donations for children that fall within that age range include: earphones, gift cards, sunglasses, skateboards, scooters, basketballs, footballs, blow driers, curling irons, and flat irons.

Your continued support and donations are very much appreciated and will go a long way to help brighten the holiday season for many children throughout the Chino Valley.

 

Walnut Avenue Elementary School celebrates its Golden Anniversary

Bubbling with excitement, Walnut Avenue Elementary School students lined up Friday morning (Nov. 4) to form a giant 50 on their school playfield. A photographer atop a very tall ladder captured the moment as part of the Chino school’s 50th Anniversary Celebration assembly.
The school — built with some of the proceeds of an $8 million bond — opened its doors on March 15, 1966 to help accommodate growth in Chino, said Principal Karen Morales, who served as mistress of ceremonies for the assembly in the school quad. At the time of Walnut’s opening, an average home cost $14,000. Today, the new homes behind Walnut cost $536,000, Morales said.
The principal said she has spent 24 of her 25 years in the Chino Valley Unified School District at Walnut as a teacher, and later as an administrator.
“I was here for the 25th (anniversary),” she said. “I was here for the 40th, and now I am here for the 50th. You can be sure I will be back for the 75th.”
Morales said the school also has a great academic legacy. She said the school’s Academic Performance Index (API) score increased 85 points in 2002, the highest increase that year of all San Bernardino County schools.
About five of Walnut’s teachers actually attended the school as children, and several other teachers have children attending the school, Morales said. Instructional Coach Kris Ives has the longest tenure at Walnut, 27 years.
She provided all the students and staff with a commemorative water bottle to mark the occasion.
San Bernardino County Schools Superintendent Ted Alejandre also attended the assembly, commending the school on reaching its golden anniversary, and for being such a beautiful campus.
“I’m home!” former Walnut Avenue Elementary School Principal Ken Hawkins told the assembly crowd. Coming from Indiana for the event, he encouraged students and staff members to make their memories of the school about people. “Smile at someone every day…do something good for someone every day,” he said.
Walnut Avenue sixth-grader Ramon Montes-Torres was the official student speaker for the event. At the school since kindergarten, Ramon thanked several individual teachers for helping him learn different skills throughout the years. He said he wants to be a civil engineer.
Other speakers included Chino Valley Unified School District Board of Education President Andrew Cruz, board members Irene Hernandez-Blair and James Na, and Walnut’s Parent Faculty Association President Aida Jimenez.
Student Council President Elsa Mercado led the Pledge of Allegiance for the assembly, and music teacher Lindsay Roche played the “Star Spangled Banner” on the French horn.
Kindergarten and transitional kindergarten students sang songs, and the sixth-graders danced and sang to “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang.
An anniversary festival, featuring games, entertainment and food, was held that evening.

 

The Great American Smokeout Anti-Smoking Event for Teens

Chino teens can participate in the Great American Smokeout on Thursday, November 17, 2016 from 4:00-6:00 p.m., at the Chino Experience Teen Center, 13196 Monte Vista Avenue, Chino, CA.

The event will feature life-saving/anti-smoking information, door prizes, an art showcase, music, and light refreshments. At this powerful event, teens are challenged to live healthy, tobacco-free lives.

The Great American Smokeout occurs annually on the third Thursday of November and is intended to encourage young people to stop smoking or not start at all.  The Teen Advisory Committee Chairperson and Teen Center participant, Noemi Lemus said, “I am looking forward to participating in this year’s event.  It is so important to get this message out there, and show teens how smoking can affect the rest of their lives.”

According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S., yet about 42 million Americans still smoke cigarettes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking-related illnesses in the United States cost more than $300 billion each year, including nearly $170 billion for direct medical costs for adults and more than $156 billion in lost productivity due to premature death and secondhand smoke.

The longer a person avoids tobacco, the healthier they’ll get, which is why the Chino Teen Advisory Committee, Healthy Chino, Chino Valley Unified School District, and the American Cancer Society have partnered to observe the annual Great American Smokeout.

CH Police Department Arrest Man For Soliciting

Chino –  A West Covina man was arrested on Thursday, October 27 for the illegal solicitation of pornographic photographs and videos of young girls.

Matthew Blanchard used various social media accounts to receive and ask for the images and videos. Detectives arrived at Blanchard’s residence with a search warrant and proceeded to confiscate the suspect’s electronic devices.

Blanchard’s booking photo is being released by Investigators as they believe more victims could be tied to the case.

Jewelry Heist Suspects Wanted

Chino- On October 27, two suspects entered the Superior Market located on 12375 Central Ave next to the Chino Police Department, where they stole from the Jewelry Store inside. The two male suspects also targeted the Superior Market located at 1130 West Sixth Street in Corona on October 31.

According to the Corona Police Department, the victim said two black male adult suspects entered the store and walked to the jewelry kiosk. The suspects asked about the jewelry and the employee opened the display case for them. As the employee briefly turned around, one suspect leaned over the counter and removed two trays of jewelry. Although a witness left before the Corona PD was able to arrive, the witness let the employee know that the suspects got into a white van and left the parking lot. The victim reported a loss of approximately $30,000 in merchandise.

The suspects were described to the Corona Police Department and video surveillance was released.

Video surveillance of the theft identified the two suspects as Deanthony Lamar Block and Dajuan Lee Calvin Robinson. The two are now wanted by four agencies; Corona Police Department, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Chino Police Department, and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Great CA ShakeOut “Drop, Cover, and Hold on”

Chino- On Thursday, October 20, millions participated in the annual Great California ShakeOut drill that takes place worldwide. The practice was to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” at 10:20 a.m. during the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill. It’s a drill that began as an annual event for California starting in 2008.

By participating in this drill, it’s become a great way for families to be prepared and become organized in the emergency of a big earthquake and how to recover quickly. In 2015, there were 10.5 million who had participated in California, and over 53 million who had participated worldwide.

The City of Chino participated in the Great CA ShakeOut. The city used this opportunity to test Chino Notify, the mass-emergency notification system used by the city. According to the City of Chino, they upgraded the City of Chino mass-notification system to allow community members a choice in the types of alert notifications to receive and the preferred method to receive them. If you were previously registered, you continued to receive emergency alerts from the Chino Notify. City of Chino also requested that registrants revalidate their information in order to access the updated features and subscriptions.

Also according to the City of Chino, the City Manager, Matthew Ballantyne states, “It is critical for community members to register and maintain their contact information in our mass-notification system.  We know cities with the ability to communicate with residents during emergencies and natural disasters can save lives.  Chino Notify is an additional communication tool in our arsenal of emergency preparation.”

University professor gives Chino High students advice on applying to college

process recently received advice from Dr. Begona Echeverria, a University of California, Riverside professor.

Dr. Echeverria met in the school library on Oct. 3 with about 75 students from Diana Murillo’s Advanced Placement math classes. Dr. Echeverria gave advice on college essays and offered to give free feedback to students who emailed their essay drafts to her.

“She provided valuable insights into the admissions process and how (student) essays can make a difference in getting into our top colleges and universities,” Murillo said.

Dr. Echeverria also talked about misconceptions some students have about top colleges, and reminded students not to rule those schools out when applying for higher education.

“She attended Stanford University and spoke highly of the experience she had,” Murillo said. “She was not thinking of applying there until one of her teachers encouraged her. It changed her life.”

Dr. Echeverria volunteers every year to talk to Murillo’s students, the Chino High math teacher said.

Brakes on Breast Cancer!

Chino – During the entire month of October, 139 auto repair shops from across the United States will offer free brake pads to their customers to help put the Brakes on Breast Cancer.

Brakes for Breast Cancer’s team is run by Dr. Vincent Tuohy at the Cleveland Clinic where they have effectively performed trials for a breast cancer vaccine. The team is working to test the vaccine on humans later on this year. If successful with their tests, the United States will officially have a vaccine for triple negative breast cancer.

Dr. Tuohy’s reasearch will continue until he finds a vaccine for ovarian cancer, prostate cancer and a multitude of other diseases, so it’s important that you donate on their website.

According to the Brakes for Breast website, in the last 5 years over $360,000 has been raised.You can support Dr. Touhy’s research and help create a world where your daughters and granddaughters will never have to worry about the tragedy of facing breast cancer.  Go to a location near you to help!

CVMC Takes 1st Place!

Chino- On October 4, the Chino Valley Medical Center was awarded first place in the Pink Glove Dance video contest for 2016. CVMC was honored to host the $10,000 check presentation ceremony to award the charity of choice, The Let It Be Foundation. The City of Chino Police Department thanked all those who voted and showed support on their Facebook page.

Medline’s Pink Glove Competition is a breast cancer prevention campaign that unites the community, healthcare practitioners and survivors to raise money for a cure and to honor those who have been affected. The original Pink Glove Dance video debuted on YouTube in 2009, where 200 people from Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon danced in support of breast cancer awareness.

Last year, CVMC took first place in the Small Bed Category that brought $10,000 for the win which was donated to Relay for Life. Also, taking a second place win in the School Health category. The Let it Be Foundation was started by the Rosen Family and says, “To understand that when a family is confronted with a life threatening childhood diagnosis, it is just too big to fight alone.” This foundation assists and cares for families who have children suffering through life-threatening diagnosis. Christen Grelling, MSN, FNP, PHN and Interim Chief Nursing Officer of CVMC states, “We are thrilled to dance for a great cause. We want to bring awareness to the survivors, they are our heroes.”

Coffee with a Cop Event

Chino – The Chino Police Department will be holding their next “Coffee with a Cop” event on Tuesday, October 4, 2016. “Coffee with a Cop” has proven to be a very successful community engagement initiative in the City of Chino. Each event held thus far has consistently opened the lines of communication between residents and the police officers who serve them.

Part of the Chino Police Department’s Strategic Vision is Community Outreach and “Coffee with a Cop” is one way for police officers to build relationships with the community members one cup of coffee at a time. The majority of contact law enforcement has with the public occurs during emergencies or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective time for relationship building and some community members may feel officers are unapproachable on the street. “Coffee with a Cop” provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the Chino Police Department through relaxed, one-on-one interactions. There is no agenda, no guest speaker and no power point presentation: just coffee and conversation.

The event will start at 3:30 p.m.  and is expected to end at approximately 5:00 p.m.  It will be held at the Starbucks located at 4013 Grand Avenue #A where coffee will be served.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Chino Bike Day

Chino- On Saturday September 24, Chino Bike Day was presented by Healthy Chino, Chino Police Department, and BOBIE’s Cycling Club at Ruben S. Ayala Park.

The participants that attended the event were able to enjoy a multitude of activities including: Community and Family Bike Rides, Helmet Fitting and Giveaway, Bike Repair Station, Bike Obstacle Course, and Kids’ Activities and Crafts.

The event started at 7:30 a.m. with a 15-Mile Community Bike Ride, followed by a Bike Safety Workshop, and ended with a 6-Mile Family Bike Ride. Local resident Angelica Cuen attended the event and said, “I really appreciate how our community leaders put this together to try and unite and get to know the people of the community. My kids had a blast. They loved hanging out and riding the whole 6 miles with the officers.” This Bike Day also became a bonding experience within families. Cuen’s parents also attended and her dad, Hernando Carreno, stated, “I’m thankful for the opportunity to participate in fun and healthy events within my community with my children and grandchildren.” It can also be hard to find safe areas to bike ride, however, Yvonne Carreno says, “I loved the opportunity to bike ride within my community. It was safe and fun. We usually have to go to another community to bike ride but now I feel we were shown a little gem within Chino.”

The City of Chino reminded everyone of the ABC Quick Check: A is for Air, B is for Brakes, and C is for Chain. As well as thanking the community partners; Healthy Chino, Chino Police Department, BOBIE’s Cycling Club, Chino Valley Medical Center, and Kaiser Permanente.

Senator Leyva attends Community meeting in Chino

Chino – On September 24, Senator Connie M. Leyva attended a Community meeting that was held at the Chino Community Building from 10 a.m. to 1130 a.m. which also featured Scott Bros. Creamery and Cal Poly Pomona’s College of Agriculture.

About 30 residents from her district attended the meeting, where Senator Leyva had the opportunity to have an informal community chat with the individuals. Senator Leyva provided a brief legislative update that included information about her bills that were signed by Governor Brown, which included SB 1000 related to Healthy Communities and Environmental Justice and SB 66 related to Career Technical Education.

After Senator Leyva’s presentation, residents were able to share their thoughts and concerns about various issues related to telemarketing scam calls, job creation, and promoting smart growth development in the specified region. Among the presentation and concerns, the Scott Brothers Creamery based in Chino provided the event with delicious rich fresh chocolate milk and orange juice for all to enjoy. Also in attendance, was Cal Poly Pomona students from the College of Agriculture who had a community resource booth that contained information about the various programs offered through their college including opportunities to purchase free produce at the Cal Poly Pomona student-run Farm Store or through the purchase of a Community Support Agriculture Box (CSA box).

Chino High Band wins Grand Championship at L.A. County Fair competition; Don Lugo takes third

Chino High 77th Cavalry Marching Band and Pageantry took first place in the Los Angeles County Fair High School Marching Band Competition on Sept. 23, winning $10,000.

Don Antonio Lugo High Marching Band of Chino took third place in the Class B of the competition, earning a $500 prize.

That evening, the two bands performed at the Milk Can football game between their schools at Chino High.

Forty-one high school bands from throughout Southern California participated in the L.A. County Fair competition on Sept. 23. They were selected for the competition after participating in parades at the Fair during its three-week run.
Chino High has competed in the competition four times in the past five years. It previously won second places and cash prizes in 2012, 2013, and 2015. This was its first Grand Championship (first place) win in the competition, according to longtime Chino High Band Director Doug Bowden.

“We’ve been second for three years, so to finally win was fun,” Bowden said.

There are no immediate plans for the $10,000 other than to replace some instruments, he said.

In the past, the Los Angeles County Fair parade championships were connected with the Tournament of Roses Parade, paving the way for bands to participate in the prestigious New Year’s Day event in Pasadena. As of 2015, Tournament of Roses Parade officials no longer attend the L.A. County Fair band competition, Bowden said.

Chino High’s Band was chosen to participate in the Tournament of Roses parade in 2002.

Don Lugo High Band also won third place in the L.A. County Fair competition in 2015, right after Stephen Yanik was appointed the school’s new band director.

“I am so incredibly proud of the amount of growth our Lugo marching band has shown in just my second year here,” Yanik said. “We are not even an official parade band, yet they went out there giving their best, performing their best….and their hard work paid off. These kiddos are awesome. It was a great day to be a Conquistador, no doubt about it. We will be using the prize money to continue to work toward new equipment and supplies for this up and coming program.”

The LA County Fair Association now awards $22,000 to nine winners in the band competition (Class B, Class A, and Open divisions).

 

Thank a Police Officer Day

Chino- September 17 is the official “Thank a Police Officer Day.” The City of Chino Police Department were celebrated by the outpouring of support from the citizens of Chino and the generosity of the Chino Wal-Mart Store #3464. Multiple cards and goodies were left by citizens, and Wal-Mart brought in cake and goody bags for all the men and women of the police agency. The City of Chino Police Department responded on their Facebook page, “We appreciate you taking time out of your busy Saturday to say thanks!”

Chino- The City of Chino Police Department has partnered with the Chino Valley Medical Center (CVMC) to participate in Medline’s Pink Glove Dance Competition for the third time and has chosen The Let It Be Foundation to receive the award money if they win the contest.

Medline’s Pink Glove Competition is a breast cancer prevention campaign that unites the community, healthcare practitioners and survivors to raise money for a cure and to honor those who have been affected. The original Pink Glove Dance video debuted on YouTube in 2009, where 200 people from Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon danced in support of breast cancer awareness.

Last year, CVMC took first place in the Small Bed Category that brought $10,000 for the win which was donated to Relay for Life. Also, taking a second place win in the School Health category. The Let it Be Foundation was started by the Rosen Family and says, “To understand that when a family is confronted with a life threatening childhood diagnosis, it is just too big to fight alone.” This foundation assists and cares for families who have children suffering through life-threatening diagnosis. Christen Grelling, MSN, FNP, PHN and Interim Chief Nursing Officer of CVMC states, “We are thrilled to dance for a great cause. We want to bring awareness to the survivors, they are our heroes.”

Chino- On August 26 a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint was conducted on Central Avenue between the hours of 8:00p.m. and 3:00 a.m. The checkpoint resulted in the following: 1080 vehicles screened, 3 DUI suspects arrested, 1 arrested for an active warrant, 21 drivers were cited/arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while suspended/revoked, and 5 other citations were issued.

The Chino Police Department is showing their zero tolerance in driving under the influence with the goal to end drunk driving, and have also released the following information with the Labor Day Weekend here:

Sadly, this festive time has also become a dangerous time for America’s roads, as many drunk drivers get behind the wheel after celebrating. For this reason, the Chino Police Department is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to stop drunk drivers and help save lives. The high-visibility national enforcement campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, runs August 19 – September 5, 2016. During this period, local law enforcement will show zero tolerance for drunk driving. Increased national messaging about the dangers of driving drunk, coupled with sobriety checkpoints and increased officers working DUI Saturation Patrols on the road, aim to drastically reduce drunk driving on our nation’s roads.

The Chino Police Department will deploy a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint and special roving DUI Saturation Patrols to stop and arrest alcohol and drug impaired drivers during the end of summer 18 day DUI campaign.  The DUI/Drivers License checkpoint will be on August 26 with DUI Saturation Patrols throughout the campaign. Police, Sheriff and the California Highway Patrol will be out looking for the tale-tell signs of drunk driving in order to stop and arrest impaired drivers throughout the region.

According to NHSTA, on average, over 10,000 people died each year (2010 to 2014) in drunk-driving crashes nationwide while California recorded 882 deaths. During the 2014 Labor Day holiday weekend (6 p.m. August 29 – 5:59 a.m. September 2), 40% of the fatalities in traffic crashes involved drunk drivers, which was the highest percentage over the five years 2010 to 2014. And nighttime proves to be the most dangerous time to be out on the roads: During the 2014 Labor Day holiday period, 83% of drunk-driving crash fatalities occurred between 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. – as compared to half of all drunk-driving crash fatalities throughout the rest of that year.

Additionally, 40% of crash fatalities on Labor Day weekend in 2014 involved drunk drivers (with blood alcohol concentrations [BACs] of .08 or higher), amounting to 162 lives lost nationwide and 20 in California. And we’re not just talking about a little bit of alcohol, either. More than a quarter (28%) of the crash fatalities that occurred on Labor Day weekend involved drivers with BACs of .15 or higher—almost twice the illegal limit.

“People need to understand that drunk driving is not only deadly, but it is illegal,” said Chief Karen Comstock. “Drunk driving is a massive problem in the United States, with more than 10,000 people dying annually. Drivers need to pay attention to their own driving, but also to others on the road who could be driving drunk,” she added. “It is your business. If you think you see a drunk driver, report them – call 911.”

The reality is that people aren’t invincible. Of the 9,967 people who were killed in impaired-driving crashes in 2014, 64% were the drunk drivers themselves. Those 6,391 drunk drivers thought they would make it to their destinations, but they didn’t.

Chino PD reminds everyone:

  • Plan a safe way home before the fun begins.
  • Before drinking, designate a sober driver.
  • Drivers are encouraged to download the Designated Driver VIP, or “DDVIP,” free mobile app for Android or iPhone.  The DDVIP app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver, from free non-alcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more.  The feature-packed app even has social media tie-ins and even a tab for the non-DD to call Uber, Lyft or Curb.
  • DRUGS, MEDICATION & ALCOHOL = CRASHES:  Recent statistics reveal that 30% of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14%) than did for alcohol (7.3%).  Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4%, slightly more than alcohol.
  • If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take your friend’s keys and help your friend make other arrangements to get to where he or she is going safely

As the summer winds to an end, remember that there’s no excuse for drunk or impaired driving.  Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.
