According to the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Station, “Apparently, over 200 goats had been brought in to clear the open field of dry overgrown brush and grass. But sometime during the night, they hatched their escape plan by pushing over a perimeter fence.”

Law enforcement’s job description includes a variety of situations, and they must be prepared to handle most of any given situation. However, Deputy Aaron Scheller most likely didn’t think he was going to have to use his “training and experience” on this day to corral the herd of goats that were in the front yard of a residence. But, he helped turned them around back to a nearby open field on Fallow Field Drive in Diamond Bar.

“It took two hours but all of the 200 goats were captured and returned to their corral.” The goats were of course eating the residents’ grass along the way back to the field too. The event even resulted in the goats getting their 15 minutes of fame on ABC7 live news.

So for future reference, if there happens to be a herd of goats in your yard, call the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Station.

Diamond Bar– So You Think You Can Dance? A resident of City of Diamond Bar, Sheaden Gabriel, had the opportunity to participate in the show on Fox where young kids were able to showcase their dancing talents.

He premiered at the show on July 11 and was voted as the top 5 contestants. Although he was recently eliminated, he states, “So blessed and thankful for this amazing experience. I just love my So You Think You Can Dance family. Thank you for following me on this journey and though it had come to an end, I’m excited for what’s to come.”

Also having the opportunity to perform at the Teen’s Choice Awards, Sheaden says, “Had the best time last night performing with my So You Think You Can Dance squad at Teen choice Awards 2016. It was amazing!!!!!”

City of Diamond Bar residents are extremely proud of Sheaden and knows this is not the end for him, he will continue to grow and be amazing on his journey.

Family Fun At NNO

Chino/DB/Walnut – The City of Chino, Diamond Bar, and Walnut held their National Night Out events on August 2, along with many neighborhoods throughout the nation.

National Night Out is a nationwide crime and drug prevention awareness campaign designed to generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts. It strengthens neighborhood spirit and law enforcement-community partnership to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting crime.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Sheriff’s Department. It will involve more than 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases around the world. More than 35 million people are expected to participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime.”

On August 2, residents in neighborhoods across the nation were asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside with neighbors and law enforcement. Many neighborhoods host a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, and flashlight walks.

The Walnut/Diamond Bar Station celebrated the National Night Out event from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the Rowland Heights Community Center at Pathfinder Park (18150 Pathfinder Road, Rowland Heights). The community enjoyed food, giveaways, and live music.

The City of Walnut held their National Night Out event at Creekside Park. Residents enjoyed food trucks, a performance by Cold Duck, and The Avengers: Age of Ultron movie shown afterwards.

“Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for National Night Out,” stated the City of Walnut Facebook page. They provided a quick recap video for the community to enjoy.

However, City of Chino residents didn’t hold a big community event, but instead held multiple neighborhood barbeques, potlucks, and dessert social events throughout the community. Events that were registered received visits by the City Council Members, Deputies, Firefighters, Citizens on Patrol, and even McGruff the crime-fighting dog.

“Thank you to all of the members of our community who participated in National Night Out! The support for our Police personnel was overwhelming and we thoroughly enjoyed visiting each of the participating neighborhoods. We are so proud to partner with you in keeping Chino safe. We also want to say thank you to Target for being a national sponsor of this program,” stated the City of Chino.

Riverside- This park features various entertainment for a family filled day such as, two tennis courts, playground, picnic facilities, a rose garden, fishing at Lake Evans and Brown Lake, lawn bowling green, barbecue areas, and a restored historic boathouse that offers pedal boat rentals.

Fairmount Park is located at 2601 Fairmount Blvd. in Riverside. The park lies between the Santa Ana River and Route 60 to the north with an area of 35 acres. If you exit Market Street, the destination is on your right side, which is easy to find!

At the park, there is access to walking trails. Walks around the park and on the bridge also give a nice view to see wild life such as ducks and geese on the Lake.

One man fishing said, “this is one of few places that I enjoy fishing at.” He also said he likes going in the evening time about 5 or 6 p.m. because he caught 4 fish in one day.

A Chino resident, Mary Gonzales says, “ I went two weeks ago (at the concert in the park) it was nice a lot of families having fun enjoying dancing and barbecue. I was also there about 2 months ago for a huge car show that had a DJ and a taco man.”

The bonding experience between parents and kids are memories you won’t forget. Michael Mascarenas says, “I like Fairmount Park mostly because of the environment, its family friendly, they allow pets, my daughter loves to fish in the lakes, and the park itself is big and roomy with nice playgrounds.”

Families enjoy taking the drive to Fairmount to escape the heat. Indio resident Marlena Arcides loves to take her three boys and says, “We always take a walk around the whole park and stop in the rose garden area and finish off at the play ground. Robert said his favorite part is the tank, Isaac said his favorite is the play ground and Damian said he likes everything about it.”

Within Fairmount Park, there is also a service kitchen for banquets and meetings that may be rented through the Park and Recreation Department at (951) 826-2000. Also, there is a nine-hole golf facility that you can go to whether you are new or an experienced golfer. The Fairmount golf course has a lighted driving range with mats or grass hitting areas, 2 practice greens, a meeting facility and snack bar and we are open 365 days a year.

Don Lugo Graduate Competes In Olympics

Chino – A 2000 graduate of Don Lugo High School in Chino will seek her fourth Olympic gold medal in this year’s Olympic Games.

Diana Taurasi will attend the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as a member of the United States women’s basketball team.

Taurasi has previously won three Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) championships in her 12 years with the professional basketball team, the Phoenix Mercury, according to the Chino Valley Unified School District. She also was named WNBA Most Valuable Player in 2009, and was on the All-WNBA First Team nine times.

Prior to her professional career, she played for the University of Connecticut, assisting the team in winning three National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) titles in the early 2000s.

The three Olympic gold medals she won for basketball were obtained in 2004, 2008, and 2012.

Many were anticipating the Olympics opening ceremony held on Friday, August 5. With Rio just one hour ahead of the Eastern Time zone, the 2016 Summer Games will be the most live Olympics ever, according to NBCOlympics. NBCU will present 2,084 hours of Olympic programming across 11 networks. The Games will conclude on Sunday, August 21, with the Closing Ceremony on NBC.

CVUSD Juniors Score Better Than State & Nation On SAT

Chino- Chino Valley Unified School District 11th graders who took the SAT in March scored significantly better than similar students statewide and nationally on the standardized test that is widely used for college admission.

District wide, the 2,009 CVUSD 11th graders taking the test (evidence-based reading and writing, and math) had a mean score of 1,005. The State mean score was 965, and the national mean score was 971.

Chino Valley’s mean score on the evidence-based reading and writing portion of the test was 505. The State’s mean score was 486, and the national mean score was 490.

Chino Valley’s mean score on the math portion of the SAT was 501. The State mean score was 479, and the national mean score was 481.

The “new” or redesigned SAT was administered for the first time in March. The redesigned test is scored differently as well as on a different scale, so comparisons between results on this test and previous versions cannot be immediately drawn, according to Julian A. Rodriguez, Director of Assessment and Instructional Technology.

Participation in the test by Chino Valley 11th-graders greatly increased from previous years because the SAT was offered to all students, the District paid the students’ test fees and took care of the registration process.

Ayala High had 89% of its 11th-graders taking the test; Chino High, 83%; Chino Hills High, 77%; and Don Lugo High, 64%.

Prior to the 2013/2014 school year, CVUSD student participation in the SAT “hovered around 45%, consistently,” Rodriguez said. The district’s highest percentage of participation was 48.3% in the 2013/2014 school year, according to Ed Data Education Data Partnership. Participation percentage rates were formerly calculated for students who took the test at any time in their high school careers.

Now that the district is a part of the SAT School Day program, it can begin tracking participation numbers based on students who take the test that single day.

 

Suspect Attempts To Take Deputy’s Gun And Vehicle

Chino Hills- The Chino Hills Police Department arrested a suspicious suspect last week after attempting to grab a Deputy’s gun and vehicle during an altercation.

On July 27, a deputy from the Chino Hills Police Department came into contact with the suspect identified as Taylor Smith, 24 year-old, resident of San Bernardino.

Smith was standing suspiciously next to a vehicle in a commercial business complex that is located near Los Serranos Country Club and Torrey Pines Drive.

Once the deputy approached Smith, the suspect fled on foot and out of the deputy’s sight. The suspect then returned to the vehicle after a short time. The deputy then attempted again to detain Smith to investigate, but Smith resisted the lawful orders and a physical altercation occurred. In the midst of trying to gain control of Smith, Smith grabbed the deputy’s firearm and attempted to remove it from the holster.

Although the officer prevented Smith from grabbing his weapon, the suspect was able to break free from the deputy and ran to the deputies marked patrol vehicle. However, Smith’s failed attempts to gain control and take the vehicle led the deputy to arrest and take him into custody where he was booked into the West Valley Detention Center and is being held on $50,000.00 bail.

Making Friends At The Gym

A new gym opened near our house a couple of years ago.  It is close enough to where we live that we could walk to it.

However, we don’t want to wear ourselves out before we get to the gym, so we usually drive there!

One of the things that you notice at the gym is the diversity of people.  There are both men and women, younger and older.  Everyone is welcome.

I know that most of us go to the gym to get some exercise, work up a sweat and improve our health.  They offer a variety of equipment and they even have personal trainers available to help you if you need it.

But, I have noticed that there is more going on than just exercise.  I notice that people greet one another when they arrive.  I noticed that people talk with one another as they exercise.

Of course, this is not true of everyone.  Some people do keep to themselves.  They wear head phones or ear buds, and they listen to music or do other things on their electronic devices.

The people with big muscles seem to take these work outs pretty seriously and they may not want to be distracted by casual conversation.

But, I have noticed that most people go out of their way to say hello to others.  They seem genuinely glad to see people and talk with others as they exercise.

Although some people come with a friend, it appears that many people have made new friends at the gym.  Recently, I met someone who had lived in my neighborhood for over 20 years.  We had never met until we went to the gym!

I suppose the social aspect of the gym is probably just as important as the physical.  As we improve our physical health, we are also improving our personal and social health, too.

I believe that God did not intend for us to live life in isolation.  He created us to be social creatures that need others to help us grow and enjoy life.

There is a phrase that is found many times in the New Testament.  It is the term “one another”.  We are told to love one another, encourage one another and serve one another. We are also told to forgive one another and carry one another’s burdens.

When we go to the gym, we not only help improve our physical health, but we may be improving the health of others.  When we speak to others and listen to others, we may be improving their health, too.

Let me encourage you to join a gym near you and find some new friends.  You will be glad you did and they will too!

DB Council Recap

Diamond Bar – The July 19 Diamond Bar Council meeting began with several presentations. The first presentation was a City Tile to Sgt. Marc Saunders with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department upon his retirement. The Council thanked Saunders for his years of dedication, and wished him a happy and fulfilling retirement. The City Manager then introduced the new City employee Fabian Aoun, Diamond Bar’s newest assistant engineer.

During the public comments, a representative from the Diamond Bar Public Library announced several upcoming workshops, including a Disney Dance Workshop on July 27 at 4 p.m. and Conductive Art: Squishy Circuits on Aug 1 at 2 p.m. A representative from One Legacy announced the progress of the organization, and several well attended events. The events led to a greater awareness of the benefits of organ donation, as well as celebrating the lives of donors and donor receivers.

Next, the schedule of future events was read, including the next Concerts in the Park and Movies Under the Stars, on July 20 featuring Yard Sale and Inside Out respectively; the next Planning Commission meeting on July 26; Concerts in the Park and Movies Under the Stars on July 27 featuring Hot August Night and Mary Poppins respectively; the next Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on July 28; and the next City Council meeting on August 2.

The Council then approved all items on the consent calendar, including the minutes from the City Council meeting of June 21; Parks and Recreation Commission minutes of May 26; Planning Commission minutes of May 24 and June 14; ratification of a check register totaling $2,706,263.01; the Treasurer’s Statement for the month of May, 2016; expenditures with Diversified Printers, Inc. for printing services; appropriation of $4,084 from the General Fund Reserves to the Fiscal Year 2016-17 Capital Improvement Program Budget, as well as a construction contract for the Diamond Bar Center restroom lighting project to Tamang Electric in the amount of $26,440; exoneration of surety bonds posted by JCCL-South Pointe West, LLC to mitigate the landslide at the location of the future Larkstone Park and the Rehabilitation of Larkstone Drive; appropriation of $80,000 of traffic improvement funds to the fiscal year 2016-17 CIP budget, as well as awarding a construction contract to All-American Asphalt, Inc.; adopting a resolution authorizing participation in the National Intergovernmental Purchasing Alliance to purchase janitorial supplies for the city facilities from Waxie Sanitary Supply; the updated program policies for the City’s Home Improvement Program; and approval of agreement with Simpson Advertising, Inc. for specialty graphic design services.

The Council held public hearings for resolutions concerning nuisance abatements against residences in 1162 Chisolm Trail Drive and 21224 Fibre Court. The Council received special assessments concerning the properties, and issued liens against the property holders.

Following individual reports and comments, the Council adjourned to Aug 2, at 6:30 p.m. at 21865 Copley Dr.

Home Makeovers With CH Home Improvement Grant Program

Chino Hills – Looking to update your home but don’t have the money to do so? Well now you can with the City of Chino Hills’ Home Improvement Grant Program that provides eligible homeowners with grants to assist in revitalizing their properties.  Eligible homeowners can receive up to $5,000 in grants. Funding for this program is provided by the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant Program.

Applications for this program are available in the Community Services Department. Read the following information for eligibility criteria and eligible improvements, according to the City of Chino Hills.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Homeowner must own and occupy the single-family residence for at least one year.
  • Gross annual household income may not exceed 80% of the San Bernardino County median income adjusted for family size:

NNO Against Crime

Chino Hills- On August 2, many community members participated in the Chino Hills National Night Out (NNO) against crime! It’s a nationwide community event that commemorates crime and drug prevention.

The event is designed to heighten awareness and to strengthen police-community relationships. In which, will give the neighbors an opportunity to gather, get acquainted, and discuss ways you can make your neighborhood safer.

City of Chino Hills residents organized an outdoor evening activity in the neighborhood for the event. Together, they planned a neighborhood barbeque, potluck, or dessert social.

Events that were registered online received visits by the City Council Members, Deputies, Firefighters, Citizens on Patrol, and even McGruff the crime-fighting dog will be taking place.

National Merit Winners In Walnut Valley

12 seniors named National Merit winners

Diamond Bar – Two distinguished 2016 Diamond Bar High School grads have joined the ranks as National Merit scholarship winners. Angela Song (Pomona College – History) and Melody C. Guo (Northwestern University – Science/Research) are among over 800 additional winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities announced on July 18.

These Merit Scholar designees join approximately 3,000 other college-sponsored winners who were selected in June. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years for undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. The final group of winners brings the number of 2016 National Merit Scholars to more than 7,300.

This year, a total of 12 Diamond Bar and Walnut High School seniors were named National Merit winners for demonstrating exceptional academic ability and potential for success in college studies. Congratulations again to previous 2016 DBHS and WHS winners: Crystal Tin-Tin Chang, Eric Chen, Charlene L. Hsu, Betty Jung Hyun Kim, Letitia So, Jonathan Sun, Miriam Hsuan-Te Sun, Margaret Wang, Dalton Trinh, and Angel Wong.

 

Officer Involved Shooting In Chino

Chino- An officer involved shooting took place on the night of July 23 after a citizen contacted the Chino Police Department to report suspicious activity in the 12100 block of Central Avenue.

At approximately 9:21 p.m. the citizen informed officers that the subject was driving a car and stopped her to ask a question. The citizen did not want to engage in conversation, and reported the man had a gun in his vehicle. The citizen directed the officers to the nearby business area where the man had parked his car.

Once an officer arrived on scene and approached the vehicle, the suspect got out of his car and refused to cooperate with the officer. Other officers were alerted once the suspect started to run on foot.

According to the Chino Police Department, “The suspect ran to an adjacent shopping center and encountered another responding officer. The suspect pointed his gun at the officer and the officer fired upon the suspect.”

The officers conducted CPR until the Chino Valley Fire District arrived at the scene. The male suspect was identified as Bernard Wells III, 31-year-old resident of San Diego. Wells was transported to the Chino Valley Medical Center where he died from his wounds.

Wells was on parole with warrants for his arrest, as well as had an extensive criminal history.

The City of Chino Police Department says, “The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave per department policy. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is conducting the investigation.” The Department also said, “The name of the officer involved will not be released at this time due to the on-going investigation.”

Tickets Available For Chino Hills Wine Walk

Chino Hills- On Saturday, Oct. 8 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Chino Hills Wine Walk returns for the sixth year. The event showcases premiere wine with food pairings from some of the best Chino Valley restaurants.

Early bird tickets are available through August 7th for $40. The ticket prices increases to $45 on August 8th. Each guest will receive 12 tickets to sample wine and small bites at a wine garden in the central courtyard and at numerous retailers throughout The Shoppes at Chino Hills. If tickets are available at the event, the price will be $55. The EnCork after-party takes the evening into the night with a full dinner and a live auction. EnCork tickets are an additional $60 ticket per person and are limited.

“The event sold out last year, and we are expecting another banner event this year,” said Chino Hills Community Foundation Chair Peter Rogers. “It’s a great evening for people who enjoy food and wine.”

All proceeds from the event benefit the Chino Hills Community Foundation, which is committed to enhancing the quality of life in the City. The Wine Walk will directly benefit new Foundation projects that include purchasing playground equipment for a future park in the Los Serranos neighborhood, beautifying trails in Chino Hills, and providing recreation scholarships for families in need.

Founded in 2008, the Chino Hills Community Foundation has awarded about $575,000 to a variety of programs and facilities that benefit all citizens. Most recently, the Foundation board voted unanimously to earmark $150,000 for a playground at a new City park in the Los Serranos neighborhood.

Walnut Valley Board Honors Gifted Young Artist

Walnut—Walnut Elementary student Michael Wu was lauded for his exceptional artistic talent by the WVUSD Board of Trustees on July 13.

The fifth grader recently garnered national attention as the grand prize winner in the Missing Children’s Day poster contest sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Michael, age 11, entered a drawing of a young boy hugging a teddy bear in the “Bring Our Missing Children Home” competition that aims to create awareness and promote child safety.

As national winner, Michael, his parents, and teacher Seema Bagai were awarded a trip to Washington D.C. to be recognized during the National Missing Children’s Day ceremony on May 25.

Concerts And Movies

Walnut – Walnut residents have enjoyed the annual Summer Concerts and Movies in the Park this summer. The event is coming to end as the last day of the series will be Aug. 2. The concerts are from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and the movies begin immediately after.

Local residents are invited to this last Concerts and Movies in the Park but make sure to bring a picnic complete with blanket and lawn chairs. A nice selection of food is also available for sale by local food trucks.

On Aug. 2, Cold Duck (Top 40’s) will provide live entertainment and The Avengers, Age of Ultron (PG-13) will play afterwards.

Let’s Go Shopping

Recently, my wife heard that a clothing store was having a clearance sale.  Everything was on sale because the store was closing.

The friend that shared the news said that she had found some good bargains.  It sounded like a shopping opportunity.

I asked my wife if she wanted to go, but I was surprised that she said “no”.  She said that she really didn’t need anything.  But I encouraged her to go.  After all, everything was on sale!

It seemed a little ironic.  Usually my wife is the one who wants to go shopping and I am the one who wants to stay home and save money.

But, here I was encouraging her to go even though she said she didn’t want to!  I finally persuaded her and I offered to go with her.

The store was not as crowded as I expected and there was still a lot of merchandise on the racks.  My wife headed to the women’s section and I went looking for some new socks in the men’s department.

I found some socks pretty quickly and had time to look at some of the golf shirts on sale.  It took my wife a little longer to try on a number of items and decide which ones she could not live without.

One of the nice things that many clothing stores provide is a place for men to sit while the women are trying on clothes.  The marketing department knows that the longer the men sit, the more the women will buy!

When we finally got to the check-out counter, we had managed to buy more items than we had planned on.  I guess that is what happens when everything in the store is on sale!

Not only did my wife purchase several items, but I ended up with socks and a new golf shirt too.   How did that happen?

When we got home, I think we both agreed that we were glad we went shopping together.  The next time your husband says, “Let’s go shopping”, make sure you say “yes”.  You’ll be glad you did and he will too!
