Christmas Traditions

By Mark Hoppermark-hopper

Thanksgiving and Christmas are special times in our family.  My wife and I enjoy the time we spend together with family and friends.

I love hearing people share about traditions that they celebrate with their family.   It seems that each family have some specific things that they do during the holiday season.

One Christmas tradition in our family is baking cinnamon rolls.  I remember baking them with my grandmother when I was young.

My wife and I have continued that tradition with our children and now they do it with their own kids.  They have changed the receipt over time but the memories remain.

Another tradition is putting up our Christmas Tree on the day after Thanksgiving.  We have boxes of ornaments and decorations that make our house ready for the holidays.

This includes putting up our nine foot artificial Christmas tree.  This year we actually purchased a new tree.  This one has the lights already attached.  Nice!

The tree looks great and is covered with ornaments that my wife and I have collected from our travels all over the world.  There is a story behind each one.

There are also ornaments that belonged to my wife’s parents and ornaments that we were given to us at our wedding 45 years ago!

Another tradition that is part of our family’s Christmas is reading the account of Jesus’ birth in the Bible.  My parents and grandparents did this on Christmas Eve when I was young.  We did this with our children and now they are doing it with their own children.

The passage is found in Luke chapter two in verses 1-20 (Luke 2:1-20).  The author, Luke, provides vivid details about the birth of Jesus.  He may have personally talked with Mary years later about the events that transpired that night.

This year Christmas falls on a Sunday.  I’m sure that many churches will be having special programs for Christmas.

We will have two church services on Christmas Eve at 4:30 & 6:00 PM.  We will also have two services on Christmas day at 9:30 & 11:00 AM.

Let me encourage you to renew your Christmas traditions again this year.  And, you may want to consider starting some new ones too.  I hope you will also make time to attend a church near you this Christmas season.

Merry Christmas!

Bugsy Siegel Opens Flamingo Hotel

Bbugsymainy History.com

On December 26, 1946, in Las Vegas, Nevada, mobster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel opens The Pink Flamingo Hotel & Casino at a total cost of $6 million. The 40-acre facility wasn’t complete and Siegel was hoping to raise some revenue with the grand opening.

Well-known singer and comedian Jimmy Durante headlined the entertainment, with music by Cuban band leader Xavier Cugat. Some of Siegel’s Hollywood friends, including actors George Raft, George Sanders, Sonny Tufts and George Jessel were in attendance.

The grand opening, however, was a flop. Bad weather kept many other Hollywood guests from arriving. And because gamblers had no rooms at the hotel, they took their winnings and gambled elsewhere. The casino lost $300,000 in the first week of operation.

Siegel and his New York “partners” had invested $1 million in a property already under construction by Billy Wilkerson, owner of the Hollywood Reporter as well as some very popular nightclubs in the Sunset Strip. Wilkerson had wanted to recreate the Sunset Strip in Las Vegas, with a European style hotel with luxuious rooms, a spa, health club, showroom, golf course, nightclub and upscale restaurant. But he soon ran out of money due to the high cost of materials immediately after the war.

Siegel, who held a largest interest in the racing publication Trans America Wire, was drawn to Las Vegas in 1945 by his interest in legalized gambling and off-track betting. He purchased The El Cortez hotel for $600,000 and later sold it for a $166,000 profit.

Siegel and his organized crime buddies used the profits to influence Wilkerson to accept new partners. Siegel took over the project and supervised the building, naming it after his girlfriend Virginia Hill, whose nickname was “The Flamingo” because of her red hair and long legs.

Two weeks after the grand opening, the Flamingo closed down. It re-opened March 1, 1947, as The Fabulous Flamingo. Siegel forced Wilkerson out in April, and by May, the resort reported a profit, but it wasn’t enough to save Siegel.

Convinced that Siegel wasn’t giving them a “square count,” it is widely believed that his partners in organized crime had him killed while he was reading the paper June 20, 1947, at Hill’s Beverly Hills mansion. Hill was in Paris, having flown the coop after a fight with Siegel 10 days prior. The crime remains unsolved to this day.

Surviving a series of name and ownership changes, the hotel is known today as The Flamingo Las Vegas, owned and operated by Harrah’s Entertainment. The property offers 3,626 hotel rooms and a 77,000-square-foot casino.

Chino Hills Street Stop Sign Misspelled

By Michael Armijostpo

Chino hills- A street stop sign on Peyton Drive in Chino Hills was misspelled this week with the letters “STPO” instead of “STOP” CBS channel 2 reported.
Crystal Cruz, a CBS reporter, is seen showing the misspelling and the neighbors aren’t happy.
“They should’ve just looked up and saw the stop sign to spell check” one resident said sarcastically on social media. Others were also extremely critical.
“The city said they’d go out and fix the embarrassing misspelling today” a spokesperson said.

“I have heard a lot about Turmeric. What is Turmeric and why is it so popular?”  – A question from an anonymous reader

By Clark’s Nutrition "ask clarks" header

Turmeric (botanical name: Curcuma longa) is a member of the ginger family. In fact if you look at fresh turmeric in the stores it resembles the look of ginger but with a deep yellow-orange color to it. Turmeric is grown in India, China, Indonesia and other tropical countries and has been a cultivated product since 3000B.C. Most Turmeric is cured, boiled, cleaned, sun-dried and then ground up into a powder form.

Turmeric is one of the major ingredients found in curry and is used as a food color in many other products.  Turmeric is also a venerated herb of the Ayurvedic pharmacopeia.  Turmeric is used in the Ayurvedic and Chinese systems of medicine to help fight inflammation, flatulence and menstrual difficulties to name a few. Current popularity has centered on the anti-inflammatory benefits. Turmeric’s ability to have anti-inflammatory possibilities surrounds the yellow pigment called curcumanoid. Many scientific studies have compared curcumin to over the counter and prescription anti-inflammatory substances.

A few of the issues that came out these studies were that the use of Turmeric could improve the ability to fight morning stiffness, help increase walking times and reduce joint swelling and that Turmeric was comparable to ibuprofen (400mg of extracted turmeric to 400mg of ibuprofen). Curcumin’s also having a powerful anti-oxidant effect protecting the body from free radicals. There have been numerous studies with Turmeric and cancer cells in test tube situations. Promising results of the test-tube research has encouraged more human clinical studies and research on this subject.

Please remember that using Turmeric is not a cure for cancer. Many companies that process Turmeric products often will indicate the amount or percentage of curcumanoid’s and may indicate a better process to increase the absorption with their products. So this will cause a little confusion when looking to a product of choice. Spend time reading labels while making an informed choice on a capsule of extracted product. One last note; Turmeric can and will stain clothes, tables, rugs, etc so don’t spill it on the floor or forget capsules in pockets before washing.

Give Yourself the Gift of Giving

By Nancy Stoops

This is truly a magnificent time of year.  I love the holiday spirit and all the houses shining ever so brightly.  There’s a crispness in the air, yet the sun is sparkling ever so brilliantly.  It’s definitely time to celebrate how blessed we all are, yet so many with be going without this year.

Why not include something that you and your family could to for the less fortunate this year as part of your holiday?  There are many children without families and many families struggling and a little generosity from you could make such a huge difference.  It really feels great to help a child celebrate with a donated gift.  You could help feed a family that much needed Christmas dinner this year.  You have the chance to give a little and make such a huge difference for another human being.

This year when you’re out there buying more than anybody really needs, pick up an extra toy or two and donate them.  Take the time to find an organization that needs some donations and just decide to help somebody have a holiday, that couldn’t have one without your help.  It feels so wonderful to share in the pure delight of giving something and expecting nothing back in return.  Isn’t this the true spirit of the holidays?  I think many of us have forgotten because the media wants to convince us otherwise.

The truth is you’ll still be loved if you don’t give somebody a diamond or a luxury automobile. A diamond or a car won’t change our world but each of us still has the power to change our world for the better.  We can start by giving to the less fortunate and together we can get back the true meaning of the season……….giving!!!!!!!!

An Unexpected Visitor

mark-hopperBy Mark Hopper

It is not uncommon to have unexpected visitors during the holiday season.  Out of town friends may plan a last minute trip to sunny southern California.  Neighbors may unexpectedly drop by to say hello.

Recently we had an unexpected visitor at our house.  Unfortunately, this one was a four legged one!

It all started when we began to notice an unpleasant odor in our garage.  At first we thought there must be something in the garbage.   But that wasn’t the case.

Then, we wondered if there was a small gas leak from the clothes dryer.  But, I checked for leaks and did not find any.

The smell continued to get worse over the next few days.  It was a mystery that we needed to solve.

My son and I searched our way around the garage moving boxes and tools looking for the source of the smell. Eventually we retraced the odor back to the clothes dryer.

We disconnnected the flexible vent hose to see if there was anything caught in it but we didn’t see anything. Then we pulled out the dryer and looked into the metal duct work under the dryer.  Still no luck.

Clearly the smell was in the dryer, but we could not see anything.  The next step was to dismantle the dryer so we could look inside.

My son and I are not trained in appliance repair so we looked on the internet.  You Tube had exactly what we needed.  Step by step we removed screws, unhooked the belt and pulled out the drum.

Pretty soon we had dryer parts spread out all over the garage floor.  I wondered if we would ever get it back together again. I suppose we could put up a clothes line in the back yard!

Finally, with the dryer disassembled, we reached the area where the exhaust vent met the lint filter.  That is where we found our four legged unexpected visitor – a dead mouse!  A fuzzy, smelly dead mouse.

I guess he was looking for a warm place to sleep on a cold winter night.   I am sorry that he selected our house and our clothes dryer.  He was an unexpected visitor.

As we approach the Christmas season, we are reminded of another unexpected visitor.  The Bible says that a baby was born in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago.  His earthly parents were looking for a warm place on a cold winter’s night.

The Bible says that this unexpected visitor was God himself who took on human form to live among us.  His name was Jesus who was born in a small, obscure Judean village and who would eventually die on a cruel Roman cross 33 years later.

Christmas is about more than gifts and gatherings of family and friends.  Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ.

You can read more about Jesus’ birth in Luke chapter two and Matthew chapter one. You can learn even more by attending a church near you this Christmas season.

Jesus was one of the most unexpected visitors history has ever known.

Getting Back to Basics: The Lost Art of Writing Things Down

By StatePointdid-you-know-web

In this digital age, you may go days without using a pen and paper, but there are many reasons to skip the devices and stick to writing things down. From staying organized to planning your week to tracking career growth, here are a few things to take note of when it comes to taking notes.

  • Taking notes in longhand can help you retain more information, suggests a study from Princeton and UCLA, as taking notes makes you more likely to process the information and reframe it in your own words. Not only that, your notepad is likely to contain fewer distractions than your laptop, tablet or phone.
  • Look professional and stay organized at your next interview or meeting. Taking notes will make you look engaged and interested in what is happening, and a professional planner and/or notebook are must-have workplace accessories. Brands like AT-A-GLANCE offer professional, yet stylish planners, matching desk pads, notepads and wall calendars in a variety of styles and formats. Visit MyAtAGlanceStory.com for organizational inspiration.
  • Making comments in your notebook or planner helps you become the publisher of your story, capturing your life’s moments along the way. These are tools that help you look back on events in a tangible way.
  • Rid yourself of the ever-present stress that comes with a busy life. Seeing everything written down will give you a sense of control. You will feel confident in knowing you have it all set, and keeping a record of your tasks in one location gives you an easy, organized way to get a grasp on your days.
  • Using a planner to track your schedule can actually help you find missing time. You will have a better grasp on what is coming up and may even see a break that leaves you time to schedule dinner with a friend, try that new recipe you’ve been craving, or time to search for that special birthday present you need for the party this weekend.
  • Increase productivity by maximizing the 24 hours that you have. Seeing everything on paper will help you plan and prioritize. Having “scheduled downtime” can help you to know when to go full steam ahead and when to take a break and unwind for a bit.
  • Tracking in one place can also help prevent committing to things you can’t do. Wall calendars for the house are a great tracking tool for multiple schedules, helping day-to-day tasks run smoothly.
  • Whether you’re planning a wedding or a work conference, a planner is among the most important assets you can use to aid your efforts, helping you keep track of all the details, large and small.

  • Find a favorite pen and a favorite planner, and get back to basics. It may have been a little while since you relied on paper, but you may find that writing things down helps you keep better track of all of life’s little details and makes you the publisher of your own story.

Giving Back This Holiday Season

Licensed Marriage Family Therapist

Nancy Stoops M.A., M.F.T Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

By Nancy Stoops

This holiday season Midnight and I with continue our volunteer work at the infusion center at St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton.  I think it’s very timely because to me the holidays are partly about giving back.  We take a lot for granted and working with cancer patients makes you really appreciate life.  So this year if you’re feeling grateful or maybe even sorry for yourself and not so grateful, do something wonderful for a good cause.  Do something wonderful for somebody else.

I think the holidays are about getting together with family and friends but also about giving something back.  You can make a huge difference in somebody’s life by being unselfish and volunteering, donating or whatever your thing is.  The holidays are a special time to show this world how very much you care.  Stop complaining about the state of our world and get out there and do an act of kindness.  I promise you, it will feel fabulous and you’ll stop feeling sorry for yourself and actually feel good this holiday season.

Take that money that you’re planning to spend on drugs or alcohol and give yourself a different kind of medicine.  Give yourself some medicine that is good for the soul.  The kind of medicine that comes from helping others and understanding that’s what we are suppose to be doing here.  What I speak of can be very healing and maybe you’ll begin to forgive yourself for all you’ve done wrong and start moving in the right direction.  Ending the year helping others can be a great way to motivate yourself to make 2016 a better & more productive year.  It’s never too late to become a better person and somebody that you can be proud of.  This year, give the gift of giving back!!!!!

Da Vinci notebook sells for over 5 million

By History.comhistory-davinci-web

On this day in 1980, American oil tycoon Armand Hammer pays $5,126,000 at auction for a notebook containing writings by the legendary artist Leonardo da Vinci.

The manuscript, written around 1508, was one of some 30 similar books da Vinci produced during his lifetime on a variety of subjects. It contained 72 loose pages featuring some 300 notes and detailed drawings, all relating to the common theme of water and how it moved. Experts have said that da Vinci drew on it to paint the background of his masterwork, the Mona Lisa. The text, written in brown ink and chalk, read from right to left, an example of da Vinci’s favored mirror-writing technique. The painter Giuseppi Ghezzi discovered the notebook in 1690 in a chest of papers belonging to Guglielmo della Porto, a 16th-century Milanese sculptor who had studied Leonardo’s work. In 1717, Thomas Coke, the first earl of Leicester, bought the manuscript and installed it among his impressive collection of art at his family estate in England.

More than two centuries later, the notebook–by now known as the Leicester Codex–showed up on the auction block at Christie’s in London when the current Lord Coke was forced to sell it to cover inheritance taxes on the estate and art collection. In the days before the sale, art experts and the press speculated that the notebook would go for $7 to $20 million. In fact, the bidding started at $1.4 million and lasted less than two minutes, as Hammer and at least two or three other bidders competed to raise the price $100,000 at a time. The $5.12 million price tag was the highest ever paid for a manuscript at that time; a copy of the legendary Gutenberg Bible had gone for only $2 million in 1978. “I’m very happy with the price. I expected to pay more,” Hammer said later. “There is no work of art in the world I wanted more than this.” Lord Coke, on the other hand, was only “reasonably happy” with the sale; he claimed the proceeds would not be sufficient to cover the taxes he owed.

Hammer, the president of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, renamed his prize the Hammer Codex and added it to his valuable collection of art. When Hammer died in 1990, he left the notebook and other works to the Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Cultural Center at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Several years later, the museum offered the manuscript for sale, claiming it was forced to take this action to cover legal costs incurred when the niece and sole heir of Hammer’s late wife, Frances, sued the estate claiming Hammer had cheated Frances out of her rightful share of his fortune. On November 11, 1994, the Hammer Codex was sold to an anonymous bidder–soon identified as Bill Gates, the billionaire founder of Microsoft–at a New York auction for a new record high price of $30.8 million. Gates restored the title of Leicester Codex and has since loaned the manuscript to a number of museums for public display.

Meet Me at In N Out

Pastor Mark Hopper

By Mark Hopper

One of my favorite lunch spots is In N Out Burger.  The prices are right and the food is great.  I love their burgers, fries and chocolate shakes too!

Recently I arranged to meet a guy for lunch to discuss a project he was working on.  He works down in Orange County so we decided to meet somewhere half way between his office and my office in Diamond Bar.

I suggested we meet at In N Out on Chapman Avenue.  He agreed.  It seemed like a simple and clear plan.

However, did you know there are actually two Chapman Avenues in Orange County?  One Chapman Avenue is in Fullerton near the campus of Cal State Fullerton just west of the 57 Freeway.

The other Chapman Avenue is in the city of Orange and extends from west of the 57 Freeway to east of the 55 Freeway.

And, to make matters worse, there are In N Out Burgers on both Chapman Avenues!

I’m sure that you already know what happened.  I drove from my office down the 57 Freeway to the In N Out by the Cal State Campus.  My friend drove from his office to the In N Out restaurant which is on the Chapman Avenue that is east of the 55 Freeway.

He was looking for me and I was waiting for him.  Both of us were on time and both of us were at In N Out Burger, but we were miles apart at different locations.

I was thankful that we both had our cell phones with us.  He called wondering where I was and I told him that I was looking for him too.

When we realized what happened, I jumped back into my car and drove to the location where he was waiting.  We enjoyed our time together and the good food, too.

I wonder if this happens in other areas of life.  Married couples think they have reached an agreement on something only to find out that their spouse had a different plan in mind.

I’m sure this happens in business too.  A supplier may think he is correctly filling an order from a customer,  but the customer may have actually requested a different size or product.

There can be misunderstanding and miscommunication in many areas of our lives.  We need to be clear and specific when agreeing on a plan of action.

Let me encourage you to be clear in what you say and clarify what you think others have said.  Effective communication is vital in every area of our lives.

I wonder if there is an In N Out “app” that I can add to my phone so that the next time I make a important  lunch appointment I will know where I am going?

Ask Clark’s

I heard that calcium causes heart disease, is that true?

A Question from an anonymous reader

By Clark’s Nutrition

Calcium consumption from foods and supplementation has become somewhat controversial in the last few years. Osteoporosis prevention has centered on the consumption of calcium from foods and supplementation. Recently, (in October 2016) the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA) released a research article that suggested higher consumption of calcium from supplementation might increase the risk of coronary artery calcification (also known as CAC). The information contained in this article helped many individuals see a different view of calcium supplementation. Although it is important to note the JAHA study also suggested that total atherosclerosis was less with individuals who consumed more total calcium via foods and supplementation but suggested the food group was best.  There are also some other responses have come out in support of calcium supplementation. The National Osteoporosis Foundation and American Society for Preventive Cardiology convened an expert panel to look at research to determine other positions for calcium supplementation. These two groups concluded that supplemental calcium with or without vitamin D have no relationship either good or bad to the risk of cardiovascular disease and cerebralvascular disease mortality. They also found that generally there was no cause of mortality in healthy adults when using calcium supplementation. They also recommend that individuals consume no more than the upper daily limits for calcium at 2000-2500mg per day including foods and supplementation. Additionally the NOF suggested that calcium is a nutrient that is lacking in many individuals. Although there is a lot of negative press about the use of calcium, the Council for Responsible Nutrition also reported that the American Heart Association’s Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis suggests that there is proof of safety in supplementation because of the positive association with total calcium consumption and reduction in lower rates of atherosclerosis. As always, if you have any questions about the use of supplementation, please consult with your doctor before using any products.

Every winter I struggle with a sore throat about ten times- A letter from Gus

Q: Every winter I struggle with a sore throat about ten times.  I’m tired of being on antibiotics so often.  Do you know of a natural remedy?  My grandma told me to drink tequila, lemon juice and honey, but I can do that before work.

A: Yes, I understand your hesitancy about drinking tequila before going to work.  What I choose for my family and myself is 8 drops of Cayenne Pepper tincture in about three or four ounces of juice.  Drink it quickly.  Your throat will burn, but it will be well worth it.

Artist Corner

“KEEP believINK ” –Tomas Rodriguez  artist-believink

By Racine Guajardo

Tomas Rodriguez is a 33 year old Mexican who was born in Durango, Mexico. Rodriguez came to California when he was 15 years old. As far as back as Rodriguez can remember he says, “Always been into art of any type, I have been drawing to keep my mind quiet.”

Technology and the Internet have opened the opportunity for people to search just about anything, so Rodriguez says, “I discovered tattooing by accident one day, buying a set up online and tattooing myself. I knew right then that this was my calling on life. And it would be my way to help people with this positive energy.”

As a spiritual person, Rodriguez talks about his influences, saying, “I have had a few spiritual teachers during my life, that help me find myself as a person and as an artist, always wanting to give back.”

Some people may get a tattoo because they think it’s cool or it’s a style that’s popular; however Rodriguez says, “I started a positive movement about tattooing, changing people’s minds about the art and the importance of decorating our bodies with permanent ink. To always believe in the reasons behind the tattoo.”

There are many different styles in tattooing, Rodriguez says, “I concentrate on my realistic black and gray, I believe that’s deep within my roots and honoring my ancestors.”  Also saying, “Just the way I see each and every tattoo I do, putting 100% of my energy and love into the piece, always doing my prayers before each tattoo behind scenes.”

When Rodriguez was asked if he could give advice, he said, “This is the easiest question for me.  DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY, it doesn’t matter if people around you think you can’t do it or that it’s not important at all or that you’re not supposed to do this or that. JUST DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.”

Believink Art Studio is located at 401 E. 10th Street Gilroy, CA 95020. Rodriguez also travels all over the states and as well as out of the country for conventions. He will be attending the Golden State Tattoo Expo from January 27th-29th in Pasadena, CA next year.

Depression and the Holidays

Did you know that suicide rates are among the highest during the holidays?  This may sound very strange to some of you, but it is true.  Believe it or not this isn’t a wonderful time of year for everybody.  I remember, as a little girl thinking how anybody could be sad this time of year.  Now that I’m grown up and work as a therapist, I understand this concept much better.

The holidays seem to make us vulnerable and open our eyes to things that are painful for us.  This time of year, we seem to become very sentimental and want to be close to our family and friends.  This is a great idea in theory, but what if you have alienated them or maybe they have passed away.  This could make your holiday feel like a very lonely time.  It makes it worse when you see other families and friends gather together.

Are you feeling without purpose this holiday season?   This may be the cause of your depression this time of year.  There are so very many places you could go and donate some time.  There are many people that are sick or just plain less fortunate than we are.  You could really make a difference for an individual, a family, or an animal and fight off the depression as well.

Whatever may be causing your depression during this holiday season, decide to do something about it. Don’t sit around and feel sorry for yourself this year, life is just too short.  Call an old friend, make up with a family member, help the less fortunate, or whatever else it takes to get through this holiday.  My point is, this year learn to help yourself, and you will give you, the greatest gift you have ever received!

History 101

Aircraft squadron lost in the Bermuda Triangle  aircraft

By History.com

At 2:10 p.m., five U.S. Navy Avenger torpedo-bombers comprising Flight 19 take off from the Ft. Lauderdale Naval Air Station in Florida on a routine three-hour training mission. Flight 19 was scheduled to take them due east for 120 miles, north for 73 miles, and then back over a final 120-mile leg that would return them to the naval base. They never returned.

Two hours after the flight began, the leader of the squadron, who had been flying in the area for more than six months, reported that his compass and back-up compass had failed and that his position was unknown. The other planes experienced similar instrument malfunctions. Radio facilities on land were contacted to find the location of the lost squadron, but none were successful. After two more hours of confused messages from the fliers, a distorted radio transmission from the squadron leader was heard at 6:20 p.m., apparently calling for his men to prepare to ditch their aircraft simultaneously because of lack of fuel.

By this time, several land radar stations finally determined that Flight 19 was somewhere north of the Bahamas and east of the Florida coast, and at 7:27 p.m. a search and rescue Mariner aircraft took off with a 13-man crew. Three minutes later, the Mariner aircraft radioed to its home base that its mission was underway. The Mariner was never heard from again. Later, there was a report from a tanker cruising off the coast of Florida of a visible explosion seen at 7:50 p.m.

The disappearance of the 14 men of Flight 19 and the 13 men of the Mariner led to one of the largest air and seas searches to that date, and hundreds of ships and aircraft combed thousands of square miles of the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and remote locations within the interior of Florida. No trace of the bodies or aircraft was ever found.

Although naval officials maintained that the remains of the six aircraft and 27 men were not found because stormy weather destroyed the evidence, the story of the “Lost Squadron” helped cement the legend of the Bermuda Triangle, an area of the Atlantic Ocean where ships and aircraft are said to disappear without a trace. The Bermuda Triangle is said to stretch from the southern U.S. coast across to Bermuda and down to the Atlantic coast of Cuba and Santo Domingo.

A Pink Donut

Pastor Mark Hopper

Pastor Mark Hopper

By Mark Hopper

Recently our granddaughter had a sleep over at our house.  We were glad she could come.

This cute three year old arrived at our house confidently pulling her small carry-on size suitcase.  She was excited to come to Grammy’s and Pop Pop’s house.

She enjoyed playing with some toys, some dolls and the small wooden train that we have.

Bath time went smoothly and we read several bed time stories.

Grammy noticed that our granddaughter’s pajamas had donuts printed on them.  The design included different sizes  and different colors.

The donuts became a topic of conversation as she got ready for bed.  Grammy asked if our granddaughter would like to have a donut as part of her breakfast in the morning.

That sounded like a good idea.  “What color donut would you like”, Grammy asked?  “Pink”, she replied.

I think our granddaughter had sweet dreams that night!  I bet there were pink donuts in her dreams.

Who do you think was going out to find a pink donut early in the morning?  Clearly that was my assignment.  Don’t come home without it!

Thankfully, we have a nice donut shop near our home.  The owner and I are on a first name basis.  I have many bought boxes of donuts from him for many early morning meetings at our church.

I was pleased to discover that he had several different types of pink donuts!  Some had sprinkles and others had pink frosting only.  Some were decorated for Halloween.

I took a chance and went for the pink with white sprinkles.  It was a winner!

Since we didn’t want our granddaughter to eat alone, I got a donut for my wife and me too.  My wife got chocolate covered and I got an old fashioned glazed.

I’m sure that we were violating all of the dietary guidelines published by the US government by serving our granddaughter a donut for breakfast.  I’m sure that her parents would prefer we provided a more balanced breakfast, too.

But, I’m also sure that this is a breakfast that two grandparents will remember for a long time!
