By: Izabella Salinas

Corona– On Jan. 9 at about 4:20 p.m., Corona Police responded to a call about a carjacking.

A 2016 Honda Accord was stolen in the 400 block of River Road while the owner was standing near it. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male and was later identified as Corona resident Eric Guzman, 20.

The two women involved in the crash were also transported to a local hospital with injuries but they are now in stable condition.

New Year, New Phase of the Pine Avenue Widening Project

By: Izabella Salinas

Chino- The city of Chino is advising residents and commuters to find alternate routes to Pine Avenue from January 4 to January 14.

This is the next phase in the multi-phase project to expand Pine Avenue from Euclid Avenue to Meadowhouse Avenue into six lanes. The improvements are said to be completed within 10 days, according to the City’s press release.

The closure will allow for work to be done to “provide additional traffic lanes and left turn lanes to ensure safety and improve traffic flow,” said the Chino press release.

This road closure is a phase part of a larger project that will eventually provide two lanes in each direction between Euclid Avenue and Meadowhouse Avenue. This is scheduled to occur during Spring 2019.

Commuters are being advised to use east/west Merrill Avenue and north/south Euclid Avenue and Flight Avenue while the construction takes place. For a full map of alternate routes, visit www.cityofchino.org/residents. Subscribe to Chino Notify to receive updates on the construction by visiting http://www.cityofchino.org/chinonotify.

Swim Smarter in an Automated, State-of-the-Art Pool & Spa

Staff Reports

Eastvale homeowners want more than a pretty swimming pool. They want beauty and design elements such as sweeping shapes, lush waterfalls, and custom rockwork, but they also want a high-tech pool that’s easy and affordable to own. “More than ever before, this means building pools that save time and money,” says Ron Grijalva, General Manager of Blue Haven Pools & Spas in the Inland Empire.

According to Grijalva, with today’s consumers more tech-savvy, more environmentally friendly, and more time-conscious than ever before, they expect a pool that delivers a real return on their investment. As a result, the traditional backyard pool has changed to respond. “People drive a car that’s loaded with the latest gadgets,” he says. “So it’s natural to want a pool with all the bells and whistles that delivers similar kinds of lifestyle benefits.” In the Inland Empire, says Grijalva, pool buyers routinely opt for a range of energy- and water-saving features and newer technologies that increase the ease and comfort of pool ownership.

For starters, options for reducing chlorine use are available. Because of their many benefits, healthier alternatives are increasingly popular. One favorite is an ozone generator. By drastically reducing the demand for chlorine—a corrosive agent—and other costly, harsh pool chemicals, this highly effective technology reduces red eyes, dry hair, dry irritated skin, and the bleach-like fumes common with chlorine use. At the same time, explains Grijalva, the system ensures a sparkling fresh swimming environment and water that’s remarkably clear and silky soft on the skin.

When it comes to keeping pool water sparkling, the filter also plays a key role. Today’s convenient cartridge models conserve water by eliminating the need for the water-robbing process known as backwashing. Filter units with extra-large storage capacity also extend the time in between needed cleanings. Some even come with built-in antimicrobial product protection to inhibit the growth of unwanted microbes—so the filter stays fresher between cleanings.

Homeowners concerned about high electric rates are turning to energy-efficient pool cleaners. These units also help automate what was once a dreaded manual chore. Choosing a two- or variable-speed pump is another way to save on utility bills. These models can cut pool energy costs as much as 70 percent!

Homeowners are also taking advantage of automation and remote controls to manage pool & spa operations. Options include handheld remote devices, as well as programs and apps for desktop computers, tablets, and smartphones. New levels of innovation are also available with pool design features. For example, energy-efficient LED lighting illuminates a pool and landscape in dazzling, changing colors.

Distinctive colors are also found in the materials used for the pool’s interior finish. Gleaming quartz aggregate outperforms old-fashioned plaster and creates a smooth, slip-resistant surface that resists deep stains. Best of all, quartz gives any pool added dimension with lasting color that won’t fade. More information on time- and money-saving pool technology, as well as information on pool design and financing programs (oac), is available at bluehaven.com. You can also request a free 44-page color brochure, no-obligation in-home estimate and custom pool plan designed for your backyard. Call us at 909-947-6474 or visit our design center at 2318 South Vineyard Avenue, Ontario.

Autism Mom: Who Am I?

By Melody Kramer

The other day I went for a job interview and the first thing they asked me was: “Tell me about yourself.” The first thing that came out of my mouth was, “I’m a mom. An autism mom.” Not even realizing that that’s not what an employer wants to hear. Although that’s what defines me. Have I lost “me”? I know my skills. I know what I can do. I ran a front office when I owned a business; I’m on the computer daily. I run special projects, I run two websites, I know programs, excel, word, publisher, to name a few. I’ve done accounting and sales. I work with many PR companies and others.  Though when asked about me, all I could say was, “I’m a mom.” Has my world been so filled with the autism world that I have set aside all of who I am and what I can do?  My life is with two boys, IEP meetings, speech therapy, doctor’s appointments, occupational therapy and more.   Where is that line that separates the mom from the person?  Will I ever be separated from that line? The day  I walk into an interview, and they ask, tell me about yourself,  and I don’t respond by saying “I’m an autism mom”, I will know I’m ready to be me again and get out in the workforce. Though I wonder if that day will ever come. I’m an autism mom. That’s my title. That’s my life and that will never change. I do realize there is me behind all of that and I’m just not ready. Maybe I never will be ready to put me in the front of being autism mom.

Tax Time

Pastor Dennis Morales of Calvary Chapel Eastvale

By Pastor Dennis Morales

“Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth…” Luke 2:1-5

I ran across a quote that read “IRS auditor to taxpayer, as nurse prepares a syringe: “She is going to numb the area around your wallet.”  In most cases, when we hear the word tax, our minds do go to our wallets.   It was no accident that Dr. Luke mentioned the name of Caesar Augustus. This man signed a tax bill that the whole world (of that day) be taxed. He needed money to raise an army to control his vast empire and to live in luxury himself.

It was prophesied that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem of the house and lineage of King David (Micah 5:2) 700 years before.  Mary and Joseph resided in Nazareth.  At the very time for Mary to give birth, all were summoned to the house of their ancestry for the census (Luke 2:1-5).  All who were of the lineage of David were to visit Bethlehem.  Both Mary and Joseph are of the lineage of David, so both had to go to Bethlehem.

Precisely according to Bible prophecy, and God’s sovereignty, Mary gave birth to Jesus in Bethlehem (Matthew 1:21-23, Isaiah 7:14 prophesied 800 years before). Such an event rooted deeply in prophesy and is proven that man could not orchestrate something of this magnitude.

Joy came to the world in miraculous fashion.  This was a taxation time in history where we look back at the and its forever linked to our hearts, not our wallet.  God orchestrated when the Messiah, Jesus, was to be born into this world to save mankind from sin and instill hope forever into all who believe.  He did this for you.

Calvary Chapel Eastvale meets at Clara Barton Elementary in Eastvale.  Services are held Sundays at 8:30 and 10:30am.  Wednesdays at 7pm.   Celebrate Christmas with us on December 23.

Joy Stealers

Tim Eaton

By Pastor Tim Eaton

Joy.  Its as much a part of Christmas as trees, gifts, mangers, and mall Santas.  We see signs that say it, and hear songs that sing about it.  But do we have it? The tragedy of Christmas is that we often find a million reasons not to have joy at this “The most wonderful time of the year.” Spending too much on gifts, the pressure to have the house, the clothes, or the family just right; juggling family time with other commitments; or extended family drama can drain the joy right out of Christmas.  For still others the joy of Christmas has been stolen more naturally by the onset of physical ailments or the loss of loved ones.

For a season of joy there sure seems to be a lack of it!  But that’s exactly why God sent his son into the world.  He sent him to be a gift to overshadow and overpower even the worst of joy stealers.  His gift of Jesus was announced with these words: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” (Luke 2:10)  Indeed, he is greater than whatever troubles you have! This Christmas clear away the stress and the clutter and remember the one who is the reason for the season is greater than the stressors of the season.  When your Christmas isn’t perfect remember that HE IS the perfect gift for you.

Some people love wrapping gifts – other can’t stand it!  To restore your holiday JOY, Edgewater will be offering totally free (no donation) gift wrapping in front of Kohl’s in Eastvale on Sunday, December 16th from 2 to 5 pm.  We are gathering a team that love wrapping just in case you don’t.

Put the JOY back in your Christmas: Christmas Music Celebration 12/23 5pm Christmas Eve 12/24 5pm. Pastor Tim Eaton, Edgewater Lutheran Church Sundays at 10am, Harada Elementary, 12884 Oakdale Street, Eastvale, CA  92880, http://www.EdgewaterLutheran.org

Eastvale Woman Fatally Shot

By Diana Sanchez

Eastvale – On Nov. 24, an Eastvale woman was shot and found deceased in the roadway of Jasper Loop, north of Aspen Leaf Lane.  The woman was later identified as Alicia Rene Lopez, 28 of Eastvale.  The Eastvale Police Department is currently seeking the public’s assistance to obtain any additional information regarding the shooting.

The incident occurred at around 8:08 pm on Saturday evening, when nearby residents reported that they heard “shots being fired” in the 1300 block of Jasper Loop.  Eastvale Police Officers were dispatched to the location.  When Police officials arrived, Lopez was found in the middle of the roadway and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  It is unknown at this time if Lopez lived near the residence where she was shot.

“One adult male was seen running from the location after the shooting,” said Sergeant Walter Mendez in a news release.  “But no further information is available at this time,” Mendez added.

After the incident occurred, several members of the community turned to social media group pages asking what happened and what the suspect looked like.  The posts caused a lot of speculation of what could have led to the shooting.  However, out of respect for the family, many administrators of the social media sites deleted or addressed comments that contained unconfirmed information.  A family member of Lopez even commented on a post stating that the incident was not a result of domestic violence.  All parties reiterated that the incident is under investigation and information regarding the suspect’s appearance will be released when available.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department-Central Homicide Unit and the Jurupa Valley Station Investigators have assumed the investigation, according to Mendez.  Anyone with information regarding this investigation is encouraged to call Investigator Vasquez of the Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit at (760) 393-3529.  An anonymous tip can also be submitted using the Sheriff’s Homicide Tipline online form at www.riversidesheriff.org/tipline/.  This investigation incident number is EV183280060.

Hundreds Served at Christmas Gift Mart

Entertainment was provided by Eleanor Roosevelt High School Students

Staff Reports

Eastvale – VantagePoint Church held their 6th Annual Christmas Gift Mart on December 1 at Eleanor Roosevelt High School.  This event helps low-income families provide holiday gifts for their children each year.

This year’s Gift Mart allowed 420 families to take home 2,100 gifts for their children.  Members of VantagePoint Church donated over 1,800 of these gifts, each valuing from $15 to $25.

In addition to the donations, over 300 volunteers gathered to make this event possible.  Even the local Boy Scout Troop woke up early to serve 1,100 pancake breakfasts for the families waiting in line.  The families were very grateful for the breakfast and coffee served, because some of them began lining up for the event the day before!

However, it was definitely worth the wait as families had a great time at this year’s Christmas Gift Mart.  Parents were able to pick out Christmas presents while their children made holiday crafts.  Then, volunteers wrapped the gifts and took them to each family’s cars.  Children were also excited to meet Santa, Santa’s elves, Spider-Man, Princess Belle, and Kylo Ren.  The entertainment continued with performances by the Eleanor Roosevelt High School band, choir, and drama departments.  In addition, free raffles and balloon animals were provided to the families before they went in to shop.

This event continues to touch the lives of local families each year.  “One family told us that their child just got out of the hospital and without us, they wouldn’t have been able to afford Christmas,” said Monique Whritenour, VantagePoint Operations & Outreach Director.

“Families were blessed, lives were changed, and we found a tangible way to be living proof of a loving God to those around us,” Whritenour added.

INCIDENT: FALSE BOMB REPORT/ SCHOOL THREATS INVESTIGATION AND ARREST

WHEN: August 2018- 11/14/18

WHERE:  Norco High School, Norco

DETAILS: Starting in August 2018 and spanning several months, the Norco Sheriff’s Office, received several school violence related threats from an unidentified suspect. The threats were directed toward Norco High School, located at 2065 Temescal Avenue, in the city of Norco. In each instance, the Norco Sheriff’s Office responded to the high school and conducted thorough safety sweeps to ensure the safety of students and faculty. The threats resulted in tying up Sheriff’s resources, delaying school schedules, as well as greatly inconveniencing students, faculty, and parents. The threats were determined not to be credible. The investigation was assumed by the Norco Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team, who spent several months tracking down leads in an attempt to identify and locate the suspect. On Thursday, November 8, the Jurupa Valley Station School Resource Officer, assigned to Norco High School, developed information that led to the suspect’s identity and residence location. On Monday, November 12, deputies assigned to the School Resource Officer Unit, the Norco Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team, and the Department’s Special Investigation Bureau, served a search warrant at a residence, located in the City of Corona. During the service of the warrant, deputies were able detain the suspect, identified as a male juvenile, in addition to recovering evidence related to the crime. The investigation revealed the threats were not credible. Pastor’s Corner: I’m Praying for You

By Pastor Rob Norris

First of all, I ask you to pray for everyone. Ask God to help and bless them all, and tell God how thankful you are for each of them.                                                                                                                 1 Timothy 2:1

In November 1970, at the height of tensions in Vietnam, a pair of college students launched a campaign to bring awareness to the plight of American POWs and MIAs. Their plan was to create inexpensive metal bracelets, each bearing a soldier’s name and the date of his capture, and distribute them across the country as reminders for the average citizen.

Sharon Denney, now a 40-something college admissions counselor, remembers sending off her$2.50 for one of those bracelets in the early ’70s. Hers was etched with the name of First Lieutenant Ralph Galati, whose Air Force jet had been shot down in North Vietnam. Galati suffered through a year-long ordeal of torture and deprivation, including more than two months of solitary confinement.

But back in her hometown of Morrow, Georgia, young Sharon Denney was praying for Galati–for his safety and for his release or rescue.

Many years passed before Sharon came across her POW bracelet again while going through somethings in her parents’ home. A few Internet searches and phone calls later, shehad not only learned of Galati’s release in March 1973 but had also found his home phone number. And when she was finally able to make contact with him, the former POW told her that she was one of more than a hundred he had heard from over the years–men and women, boys and girls, who had worn his bracelet, had remembered his suffering and had prayed, prayed, prayed for their prisoner soldier.

Prayer knows no boundaries of time or space, no limits of age or distance. Prayer is simply our link to the heart of God and to people’s lives all over the world. Never underestimate what prayer can do in the short run or the long haul. Don’t give up. Keep praying.

Live it:
Why don’t we pray more as individuals and as a couple? Who haveyou been forgetting to pray for?

Pray:
Take turns bringing some requests before God today for people who seem to be facing impossible situations.

The Crossings Church meets Sunday mornings at 10:00 am at River Heights Intermediate School, 7227 Scholar Way, Eastvale, CA. Trusting and believe with you!

Our Life: The Consequences of Aggressive Behavior

By Michael Armijo

I’ve ran into people, and have practiced, at times subconsciously, what i define as “aggressive behavior.”

I believe that aggressive behavior comes in many forms. Some forms are in obvious threatening writing, some are in intelligent verbose writing, some are disguised as protective action, but most aggressive behavior is in actual physical delivery.

It’s difficult to handle these types of actions as individuals are clouded by what they believe is the truth, and others are just spewing their anger issues through an action that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Although protectiveness is admirable, individuals have a tendency to go straight into“attack mode” and disregard everyone involved. They blindly approach people with aggressiveness without realizing neither the consequences nor the outcome. So i stepped back for a moment and analyzed the root cause of such behavior.

What I’ve come to learn is that many people act out the anger they’ve carried from their childhood. We, as children, were abused and felt helpless. We were victims and had no say so nor did we have the physical ability to defend ourselves. So, as adults, we are quick to resort to “attack mode” in an effort to avoid feeling how we did as a child, trying to avoid feeling like a victim again.

Another misguidance appears to be our anger towards our own life, our lives within our current situation. We are angry with our spouses, our partners, our bosses, or ourselves. The mistakes we’ve made, the consequences of our irresponsible actions.

These are the times to remember that what happened to us as children, with negligent and abusive parents and/or siblings, is not the same as the situation in front of you. Sometimes criticism is constructive, not destructive. But that’s just one of the many scenarios that come to mind.

As a parent, I’ve made many comments that were not abusive, they were given in the fatherly protective love trying to help their child be a better human being, because I believe they have the ability to be better. But it sometimes isn’t received the way in which it was intended. And what I’ve learned from other parents, those scenarios can sometimes turn into another result of aggressive behavior.

What’s sometimes missed by the aggressor is the fact that when you go after someone aggressively, or angrily, the victims protective wall comes up. What happens next is that your input now turns into an unheard statement. Because the victimis so busy trying to protect themselves they are not listening to you. They too turn into a person who is in attack mode. Its not what you say in life,it’s how you say it.

I try to ask others to refrain from what appears to be aggressiveness and stick to common sense and wisdom that’ll appeal to others. You will help that way and you’ll be heard and respected.

No one has the temerity to treat others without respect, it just hurts everyone involved. And no one can give their burdens to others when their intentions are presented in a harmful delivery. You still have the perils that haunt you, bu tnow you can sometimes make new ones by your newest actions.

So I emphasize, and I understand the aggressive behavior now. I get it. I understand. But what I’ve learned is that you can get more from an individual by raising their spirits, than you can by lowering their dignity.

Here We Grow Again: Eastvale Welcomes Sunshine Growers Nursery

By City of Eastvale

The City of Eastvale is proud to announce that Sunshine Growers will be coming to Eastvale! On Wednesday, October 17,2018 the Eastvale Planning Commission approved the development of a new 20,000-square-foot greenhouse and retail store for a new plant nursery at Sunshine Grower’s new location on Riverside Drive, east of Hamner Avenue.

“We are thrilled that Sunshine Growers has chosen to expand their business in our young and growing community,” said Mayor Clint Lorimore. “I am certain that our community will benefit from the variety of plant options that Sunshine Growers will provide, and I look forward to seeing how Eastvale homeowners will beautify their landscaping following the opening of this new business.”

This locally-based, family-owned business will be moving from Ontario, bringing jobs and approximately $4-million in taxable retail sales to Eastvale. Sunshine Growers is a family of wholesale and retail nurseries that sell quality plant material to the community and to landscape contractors. When they open, Sunshine Growers will be the only full-service plant nursery in Eastvale, providing a great local option for the community to continue to enhance landscaping around their homes, keeping our city beautiful. Sunshine Growers will carry the best-suited plants for the Eastvale community based on environment, typical weather, and placement. Having a local nursery will allow pest and other environmental problems to be easily identified.

Sunshine Growers has also been extremely supportive of both the Eastvale Community Fruit Tree Project as well as the Eastvale Garden Group. These supportive efforts have included donating trees to the Eastvale Community Fruit Tree Project, hosting classes for the Eastvale Garden Group, and donating gift cards to these groups.

“It’s an exciting time to grow your business in Eastvale!” said Interim City Manager Bryan Jones. “Their success is our success and I am confident our residents and businesses will give Sunshine Growers a warm welcome.”

Keeping Your Health on Track During the Indulgent Holiday Season

By Statepoint

The holiday season can be an indulgent one, full of cookies, candies, heavy meals and eggnog. While no one wants to rein in the fun during the merriest time of year, there are simple ways to keep your health on track during this indulgent holiday season.

• Stick to Routines. To the best of your ability during this hectic time of year, attempt to stick to routines that promote wellness. Set a bedtime and honor it. Hit the gym. Meditate. Do whatever it is that keeps you grounded and feeling your best.

• Drink Up. Many people associate dehydration with the warmer months. But in winter weather it can be especially easy to forget to stay well-hydrated, especially when you’re indulging in alcoholic beverages at all those holiday parties.

Remember, water doesn’t need to be the only source of hydration you think about this season. Soups and purees made from hearty winter vegetables, as well as citrus fruits do the trick, too, and their nutritional properties can help keep you healthy in winter.

• Keep Things Organically Sweet. Staying on track doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the sweetness of the season. Instantly boost the flavor of your favorite meals with organic honey. One great option is Organic Honey In The Raw. USDA Organic Certified and Non-GMO Project Verified, it’s made from pure nectar collected from exotic wildflowers found in the remote Caatinga region of northeast Brazil. The hand-harvested, sustainable honey is raw (never heated above 117 degrees) and unfiltered, so it retains the benefits of bee pollen.

And just one tablespoon of organic raw honey provides the right amount of sweetness and flavor for any dish or drink, including year-round staples like oatmeal, yogurt, tea, and more. You can also consider giving a honey makeover to all your favorite holiday recipes, including glazes and sauces for meat and poultry, cocktail recipes, and of course baked treats.

• Make Substitutions. Other healthful substitutions you can make this holiday season include topping pies with Greek yogurt instead of cream, using apple sauce in place of oil and nut flour instead of white flour in baking, and serving vegetable mash as an alternative to mashed potatoes.

• Be Mindful. The holiday party circuit can be dangerous when it comes to making nutritious choices. When you enter a party with a buffet set-up, it can be tempting to reach for the richest foods first. Before indulging in the canapes and Swedish meatballs, try filling up a plate with crudité first. While you’re doing so, get a good look at all the options available. This way, you’ll be more likely to savor choice items you’ll truly enjoy.

A joyful holiday season doesn’t mean you must pack on pounds or feel under the weather. By keeping your health on track throughout this indulgent time of year, you can start 2019 with your best food forward.
