Getting The Kids To School

By Pastor Mark Hopper

I have often said that no one works harder that a mother with young children.  These remarkable women get kids up and fed and dressed.  They get them fed again, bathed and back to bed again.  Mothers rarely get a break from their busy routine. An old word of wisdom says, “A mother’s work is never done, from dawn to the setting of the sun”.  I believe that is still true today.

On a recent trip to visit some of our grandchildren, my wife and I got to observe the busy life of two mothers with young children.  Now, both of these daughters have wonderful husbands who help a lot with the kids.  But, these mothers with young kids are very busy. When the kids were very  young, most of the day was focused on feeding, bathing, dressing, and playing.  Now that the kids are older, school has become a major component in their daily routine.  School activities and homework assignments add additional pressure to the daily schedule.

But, the moment of truth every day is getting the children ready for school. Since school has an official start time, the kids have to be ready on time.  That can be a challenge. With multiple kids in each house, there are multiple personalities and different priorities.  Some kids are ready to get up and get going at the start of the new day.  But other kids are sleepers and don’t seem to want to wake up. Some kids are low maintenance.  They can get up, get dressed and get their own breakfast.  But other kids are slow starters who seem to want help each step of the way.

Some of the kids are waiting at the door, ready to get in the car and get going.  Others seem to be in slow motion and can’t find the essentials like a matching pair of shoes or their school back pack. Pressure builds as the clock winds down and kids are getting into the car.  Questions are asked like, “Do we have everybody?  Do each of you have your backpack and lunch?  Did you remember to bring your permission slip for the field trip?” Mothers all over the neighborhood “start their engines” and race off to school again.  This daily ritual is amaing to observe.  These remarkable mothers get the job done and the kids to school on time every day.  It is a miracle that no child is left behind and that mothers and kids maintain their sanity day after day, week after week throughout the school year.

There is a wonderful passage in the Bible in Proverbs chapter 31 that describes a wife and mother who cares for her family.  One verse says, “Her children stand up and call her blessed.  Her husband also rises up and he praises her.  He says, many women do excellent things, but you are better than all the rest”.(31:28-29)

Mother’s Day is right around the corner.  Let me encourage you to find a card and buy a thoughtful gift that will communicate your love and appreciation for your own mother and the mother of your children.  Mother’s Day is a perfect time to say thanks to these amazing women.  They will be glad you did and you will too.

Teen Recovering Well After Heart Transplant

By Marissa Mitchell

Chino – Sophomore Alexis Anderson of Chino Hills High is recovering remarkably well since her heart transplant earlier this month.10

At age 15, she suffered an episode of cardiac arrest from a heart condition developed during adolescence. Prior to receiving an appropriate heart donor, she had spent over a month in the ICU, mostly unconscious and entirely immobile. Her cardiac arrest placed her at emergency-level status of need of a heart.

The surgery performed on March 6th lasted 12 hours. According to her father, Todd Anderson, “Alexis has been recovering very well since her transplant.” Her body has not rejected the new heart in any way, and her vitals are stable. He added, “In my opinion she has been improving at a faster rate than expected.”

Earlier in February, her struggle received a good deal of media attention when her classmate LaMelo Ball scored an impressive 92 points in a Chino Hills High basketball game, and he subsequently dedicated the outcome of the game entirely to her.

“Her biggest obstacles now are in the rehabilitation process,” stated Todd Anderson. “She will continue to improve, but it will be a long journey.” Now that Lexi can stand and walk (with assistance), and that her vocal cords are healing with her voice, Lexi is truly demonstrating her resilience.

Since her hospitalization, Christian organization Agape Miracles has set up a GoFundMe account to fundraise for medical costs on the family’s behalf. There were many factors going into “finding” Lexi a heart, but most are as mysterious as (right now) are the details of the organ donor.

The family first found Alexis nonresponsive on February 3 of this year. Her parents then performed CPR until the paramedics could take over the situation. She was successfully revived and transported to the emergency room, and put on a transplant list. She was given priority 1-A status on the heart transplant list: emergency status. While waiting, she was kept alive by a VAD, also known as a ventricular assist device. She had emergency surgery Feb. 7, just prior to LaMelo Ball’s 92-point game. She then received a heart.

Throughout this ordeal, the Andersons sought spiritual assistance through prayer. They actively attribute Lexi’s recovery to God. Even now, Lexi has a wonderful spirit about her. As her father stated, “There will be many challenges ahead, but we are confident that God will continue to provide for Lexi through each and every obstacle.”

Planning Commission To Hear WalMart Proposal March 15

WalmartBy Michael Armijo

Eastvale – The long awaited Walmart project is finally being heard by the Eastvale Planning Commission at a public hearing next Wednesday, March 15, at Rosa Parks Elementary School, located at 13830 Whispering Hills Drive, Eastvale, 92880.

The meeting will commence at 6 pm and residents will have the opportunity to voice their opinion or comments at the public hearing, to consider the development of the new retail center with a Walmart Store on an approximately 24.68-acre site – Project No. 12-0051. The project site is located at the southeast corner of Limonite Avenue and Archibald, which borders the cities of Ontario and Chino.

All comments made in writing or via e-mail prior to the public hearing must be submitted and received by the City of Eastvale City Clerk no later than Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. Oral and written comments may be submitted directly to the Planning Commission at the public hearing.

The proposed project includes the following entitlement applications for consideration and recommendation to City Council:

  • Environmental Impact Report (EIR) (SCH #2015011020) for the project pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)
  • General Plan amendment to change the land use designation for the eastern half of the project site from Light Industrial to Commercial retail.
  • Change of Zone to change the zoning for the eastern half of the project site from Manufacturing-Service Commercial to General Commercial.
  • Tentative Tract Map No. 35061 for the subdivision of approximately 24.68 acres into five commercial parcels and one water detention basin parcel.
  • Major Development Review for the development of an approximately 192,000-square-foot Walmart store and associated improvements within the retail center.
  • Variance from the parking lot landscaping and shading requirements of the Zoning Code for a portion of the parking lot in front of Walmart.
  • Conditional Use Permit to operate a drive-through pharmacy for Walmart.
  • Conditional Use Permit to allow alcohol sales in Walmart.
  • Conditional Use Permit to allow alcohol sales in a future gasoline service station in the retail center.
  • Two Conditional Use Permits to allow two drive-through facilities on two parcels in the retail center.

The project, which was proposed in 2011 by Walmart, will be a 177,000 square foot Super Walmart (open 24-hours), and a “Green Store”, with part of their environmental plan directed to boost energy efficiency, cut down on waste, and reduce greenhouse gases tied to global warming.  This store, which was considered a nationwide “pilot store”, will anchor the lot with other tenants still to be determined.

The widening of Limonite and Archibald, part of the plan to accommodate the higher amount of already congested traffic, affects the proximity of electrical towers that occupy the 40-acre property. These two towers, bordering Archibald Avenue and Limonite Avenue, created a liability issue, according to online reports. Moving the estimated 120-foot towers cost about $1 million, the report said.

“This could bring over $1 million in sales tax revenue to the city,” said then Mayor Ike Bootsma in an interview last year. “Residents will have an opportunity to review plans and offer opinions at City Council meetings before the project breaks ground.”

Though Walmart and Sam’s Club regularly build in close proximity of each other, the city said this location will be strictly a Walmart.

The City of Eastvale has completed an EIR for the proposed project in accordance with CEQA to assess the potential for any significant environmental impacts associated with the proposed project. The draft EIR was released for public and agency review on October 3, 2016, with the 45-day review period ending on November 17, 2016.  The Planning Commission will review the EIR and provide a recommendation to the City Council for consideration prior to making a decision on the project.

The EIR recommends the adoption of various mitigation measures that, with three exceptions, reduce the project’s environmental impacts to a less than significant level as required under CEQA. The EIR identifies three (3) environmental impacts that cannot be reduced to a less than significant level: air quality, noise, and transportation.  Because of these significant and unavoidable impacts, a Statement of Overriding Considerations must be adopted by the City Council prior to any decision to approve the project.

Any person may submit written comments prior to the public hearing or may appear in person before the Planning Commission to be heard. Written comments may be mailed to the City of Eastvale City Clerk located at 12363 Limonite Avenue, Suite 910, Eastvale, CA 91752. Any questions on the project may be directed to Eric Norris at (530) 574-4875 or via e‑mail at enorris@eastvaleca.gov.

DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint 1/21

DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint
Post Date: 01/13/2017 11:00 AM
Agency: Eastvale Police
Station Area: Jurupa Valley
Written Date: January 12, 2017 Time: 2:30 pm
Incident Date: January 21, 2017 Time: 8:00 pm – 4:00 am
Incident Location: An Undisclosed Location within Eastvale City Limits
Reporting Officer: Deputy Cuadra
File Number(s): To be Determined
Details:

The Jurupa Valley Station-Eastvale Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on January 21, 2017, at an undisclosed location within the city limits of Eastvale between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.
The deterrent effect of High Visibility Enforcement using both DUI checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols has proven to lower the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug-impaired crashes. Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized proactive DUI operations are conducted routinely.

DUI Checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

In California, alcohol involved collisions led to 1,155 deaths and nearly 24,000 serious injuries in 2014 because someone failed to designate a sober driver. Over the course of the past three years the Jurupa Valley Station – Eastvale Police Department officers have investigated 67 DUI collisions which have claimed 1 life and resulted in another 9 injuries.

Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing, delaying motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes.

Studies of California drivers have shown that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol. Everyone should be mindful that if you’re taking medication – whether prescription or over-the-counter – drinking even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairment affects.

Drivers are encouraged to download the Designated Driver VIP Opens in New Window, or “DDVIP,” free mobile app for Android or iPhone. The DDVIP app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver, from free non-alcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more. The feature-packed app even has social media tie-ins and even a tab for the non-DD to call Uber, Lyft or Curb.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspensions and other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Jurupa Valley Station- Eastvale Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1’.

5 Tips for Good Gut Health During the Holidays

By StatePoint

The holiday season can be one of the most stressful times of the year and you may have noticed you’re more prone to colds and upset stomach when you’re stressed. Stress tends to slow the digestive process. What’s more, 70 percent of the immune system lies in the digestive system, according to findings reported in “Clinical & Experimental Immunology.”

Unfortunately, one of the most stressful seasons coincides with one of the most indulgent. To help, Vincent Pedre, MD, author of the new book, “Happy Gut: The Cleansing Program to Help You Lose Weight, Gain Energy, and Eliminate Pain,” is offering useful tips to lessen digestive upset and keep your gut healthy over the holidays.

  • Pack healthful snacks. When traveling, people tend to grab unhealthy foods for convenience. Pack nutritious foods like carrots, apples, almonds and frozen yogurt to keep the body strong. Foods like yogurt, which contain probiotics, not only address digestive issues, but are said to help stave off colds. One study found that those who took a probiotic supplement with Lactobacillus rhamnosus, a type of healthy probiotic bacteria, recovered earlier and reported less severe symptoms.
  • Eat mindfully. Eating in a hurry is a major no-no for good gut health, and makes you more likely to overeat, since it takes the brain about 20 minutes to recognize when you’re full. Plus, eating quickly can cause gas, acid indigestion and bloating.

“When we stop and really enjoy what we’re eating we’re less likely to overdo it, and we’ll avoid issues like emotional eating,” says Dr. Pedre.

  • Relieve stress. Take some “me time.” Maintaining an exercise routine and practicing deep breathing relaxation techniques can do wonders for mental and digestive health, and help alleviate stress’ negative effects on the digestive system, such as gas, acid reflux and stomach cramps.
  • Maintain a sleep routine. Get an adequate night’s rest of at least eight hours nightly. Your body and gut like predictability. Plus, staying up late could make you more likely to visit the fridge and eat that piece of chocolate cake that’ll lead to an upset stomach.
  • Help your body naturally. Overeating or drinking is easy to do this time of year, but it can cause stomach distress. Check out local natural product retailers, which offer homoeopathic medicines like Nux vomica to relieve nausea, heartburn, acid indigestion or fullness associated with overindulgence of food or drink. While these uses have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration for efficacy, Nux vomica is one of the most popular homeopathic medicines. It’s also easy to take. The pellets are quickly absorbed under the tongue without water, as opposed to being absorbed through the stomach, which may not be functioning at its peak. As a homeopathic medicine, it has no known side effects such as constipation, diarrhea, gas or drowsiness.

To learn about relieving a variety of acute stomach issues, explore the Boiron Medicine Finder app. This free resource, available on Android and iOS devices, allows users to find the right homeopathic medicine for many everyday conditions.

Both the stress and the fun of the holiday season can take a toll on gut health — take extra steps this season and beyond to feel your best.

Straight Talk

I am a single mother.  My 15 year old daughter tries to embarrass me in public settings. –A letter from Janice B.

Danice Akiyoshi

Danice Akiyoshi

By Danice Akiyoshi N.D.

Q: If I have a drink at a party, BBQ, wedding reception or sports event, she feels like she can question me about how many drinks I’ve had and how stupid I’m acting.  If she sees me dancing with someone she gives me hard looks the whole time.  When I invite friends over to our apartment she scowls and waits for a chance to make a rude remark.  I’ve had it.  I need advice.

A: Your daughter is somehow confused about who’s in charge.  This usually happens when a passive parenting approach is in play.  If your daughter isn’t sure who is in charge, she probably thinks she is.  This is hard for kids and that’s why she seems so upset and unhappy.  Kids don’t have the developmental skills or maturity to be the person in charge.  You need to get things turned around by having her firmly understand that you are the parent and you are in charge.  You might think kids will automatically rebel against this, but they actually often calm down and feel relief.  It causes them great anxiety when they feel like they have to be in charge.

If you have a casual parenting style or are mistakenly trying to treat you daughter like your buddy, I would recommend stopping that now.  Regain control.  Behave in a respectable manner when you’re in the presence of your daughter.  It appears that your choices for having a good time are rubbing her the wrong way.  Develop rules and codes of conduct for public situations and don’t waver.  Kids should be answering to adults not the reverse, but that only works in a healthy way when the adult shows up as a strong, decent, and competent person.  Be that person.
