Ask Clark’s

"ask clarks" headerI was talking with my neighbor the other day, and he was telling me that he takes B-vitamins to increase his energy level. What are B-vitamins, and can they be used to increase energy? -A question from Alex of Mentone

By Clark’s Nutrition

B-vitamins have many different effects on the human body, with one of these being an increase in energy levels. Energy is obtained from foods that have macronutrients which are proteins, carbohydrates and fats. B-vitamins have active cell enzymes that help manufacture high energy compounds like adenosine tri-phosphate (also known as ATP) from these macronutrients.  So ultimately, B-vitamins help with energy either inadvertently or directly. The B-vitamins that work in the ATP energy building area are vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid) B6 (pyridoxine hcl) and biotin. Additionally the building of red blood cells is dependent on vitamins B12 and folic acid with additional help from B6. Red blood cells are rich in hemoglobin which carries oxygen to cells in the body and to the brain. Oxygen is essential for humans to exist; therefore red blood cell production is a very important component to maintaining a healthy life. This process gives us another possible reason why some might get energy from B-vitamins.

Food sources of B-vitamins include the following groups: vegetables (folic acid), protein foods (meat, sea foods, nuts and seeds, and legumes), soy foods (b1, b2, b3, b6, b12, and folic acid), whole grains (folate, b1, b2, and b3), fruits (folic acid), milk products (b12, b2). Although we grouped these together for saving space, consider looking at specific foods for guaranteed availability and possible percent of daily value also known as the RDA.

Each one of the B-vitamins has a deficiency symptom as well. Deficiencies in the United States are typically less common than in countries that don’t have food(s) that are fortified which is a common practice in the U.S. As an example of one of these deficiencies, a b-12/ folic acid deficiency is typically seen in certain types of anemia (Macrocytic). Current and recurring research has  also suggested individuals at the early onset stages of Alzheimer’s disease are typically low in blood levels of b12, indicating a sub-clinical effect on B-vitamin deficiency and a possible link to development to Alzheimer’s disease. For this and other reasons, many individuals choose to take a multivitamin to prevent possible deficiency or sub clinical deficiency. Currently, serum folic and vitamin b12 levels are not diagnostically reliable tests for screening presymptomatic Alzheimer disease. However, the results may statistically be significant if increases are seen in sample size populations. Additionally getting adequate amount of B-vitamins are important for nerve, energy and mental cognition. A recent study done in Geneva Switzerland by Professor Scholey with the Center for Psychopharmacology on supplemental B-vitamins and the use of multivitamins suggested improved mental, cognitive, working memory, attention and improved mood.

So maybe what your neighbor is talking about is just feeling better. Remember that all individuals are not going to respond the same way when using supplementation.  Always check with a qualified health professional if you have any questions about your health.

Straight Talk

I went to a family reunion at my cousin’s house last year and my camera was missing from the table I was sitting at- A letter from Stacy L.

Danice Akiyoshi

By Danice Akiyoshi N.D.

Q: I asked my cousin to ask everyone if it got mixed in with their belongings accidently and she said she would send a group e mail.  She said no one responded and I was disappointed because I had tons of important pictures stored in that camera that I hated to lose.  Yesterday, I saw that my cousin was at Disneyland because she posted pictures on social media.   I was mad when I saw my exact camera with a pink and white polka dot case in her hand in one of the pictures.  She lied to me.  I want my pictures back so I plan to confront her and ask for my camera back.  My mom said I might be mistaken and that I shouldn’t confront her.  She said it will cause a fight between our two families and I should not bring it up.  I disagree.

A: I disagree with your mom.  Call your cousin and politely mention that you noticed a camera that looked exactly like yours in her social media photo.  Ask her if she found it after all but just forgot who it belonged to.  If she says it’s hers, I doubt there’s much you can do unless you’re willing for things to get ugly.  Only you can decide how far you want to take it at that point.  This is a tough situation.

Pan-Roasted Chicken

By Hello Fresh

Chicken gets a major flavor upgrade when Dijon mustard is involved. In fact, it’s one of our secret weapons in the kitchen. Hailing from Dijon, France, this grayish-yellow condiment pairs impeccably with garlic and lemon to lend a distinct and rich flavor to the sauce.

History 101

Moby-Dick published

By History.com  histort-101-web

On this day in 1851, Moby-Dick, a novel by Herman Melville about the voyage of the whaling ship Pequod, is published by Harper & Brothers in New York. Moby-Dick is now considered a great classic of American literature and contains one of the most famous opening lines in fiction: “Call me Ishmael.” Initially, though, the book about Captain Ahab and his quest for a giant white whale was a flop.

Herman Melville was born in New York City in 1819 and as a young man spent time in the merchant marines, the U.S. Navy and on a whaling ship in the South Seas. In 1846, he published his first novel, Typee, a romantic adventure based on his experiences in Polynesia. The book was a success and a sequel, Omoo, was published in 1847. Three more novels followed, with mixed critical and commercial results. Melville’s sixth book, Moby-Dick, was first published in October 1851 in London, in three volumes titled The Whale, and then in the U.S. a month later. Melville had promised his publisher an adventure story similar to his popular earlier works, but instead, Moby-Dick was a tragic epic, influenced in part by Melville’s friend and Pittsfield, Massachusetts, neighbor, Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose novels include The Scarlet Letter.

After Moby-Dick‘s disappointing reception, Melville continued to produce novels, short stories (Bartleby) and poetry, but writing wasn’t paying the bills so in 1865 he returned to New York to work as a customs inspector, a job he held for 20 years.

Melville died in 1891, largely forgotten by the literary world. By the 1920s, scholars had rediscovered his work, particularly Moby-Dick, which would eventually become a staple of high school reading lists across the United States. Billy Budd, Melville’s final novel, was published in 1924, 33 years after his death.

“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world” – Robin Williams

Original Riot  or1

A group of three friends from Eastvale, CA have come together to form a rock band called, “Original Riot.” They are Coryn Cahill, Leyla Lagueux, and Dayton Goegebuer. Dayton started playing guitar when he was 5, Coryn started singing when she was 5, and Leyla started playing guitar when she was 10. The trio met through music lessons with Michael Anderson and the Rockstars of Tomorrow Studio in Norco, Ca. “Since we shared our passion of music with each other and had similar style and interest we decided to get together, and it’s been amazing!” All three have been highly influenced by Michael, Chuck and all the instructors at the Rockstars of Tomorrow Studio. However, a big influence has come from the support and encouragement of all their families. Each one had someone specific whose support has impacted them personally; Leyla says her dad Jef, Coryn’s Grandpa Bill, and Dayton’s brother Hudson.

Original Riot’s style is primarily punk/alternative rock. However, they said, “sometimes after school when we are playing music together at one of our homes it is not uncommon to randomly change up the sound with a banjo, ukulele, trumpet, saxophone, baritone or keyboard.” At times they like to switch things up a bit and even trade instruments between them, just for fun. “Music is our passion and our ultimate style is to have fun with it!”

When Original Riot was asked what makes them different, they said, “None of us think we are that different from other kids our age.”  Original Riot has been able to find interest beyond music also saying,

“We’re just regular 12 and 13 year old kids, we go to school together, we like to go camping, paintballing, road-tripping with our families, etc. We are good friends outside of band practices or performances and enjoy doing things together in addition to our musical passions.  We have been performing together for going on 2 years now.”

For being so young, the three had great advice: Don’t give up, no matter how hard it might get (Leyla). Always do your best and be true to yourself (Dayton). Work hard for the things that you love (Coryn).

Original Riot says, “We enjoy getting together and collaborating to create our own music. We are excited to be working on our 4th original song! We love our fans and are excited for every opportunity we get to play for our friends, families and supporters in the crowd.  It’s amazing to have one of our Grandparents cheering for us! We seriously love you all!”

Original Riot has played at the House of Blues Anaheim, San Diego, Glasshouse, Whisky A Go Go, Troubadour, Chain Reaction, Vault, Relay For Life, several Community fundraising events, including the San Antonio Hospital and an event honoring our Veterans in Dos Lagos. Coming up: You can see them at the House of Blues in San Diego on November 19th 2016! Facebook message them for tickets!

People in my family try to make me feel guilty- A letter from Anna G.

Danice Akiyoshi

Danice Akiyoshi

By Danice Akiyoshi N.D.

Q: Why do people in my family try to make me feel guilty or like I’m a bad person when I stand up for myself?  Isn’t this a good thing?

A: Personally, I think it’s a very good thing.  Keep in mind that some people don’t deal well with conflict and some people are just plain cowardly.  They may resent you for being able to do what they can’t manage to accomplish in their own lives.  Do not let this lack of approval stop you from taking care of yourself.

Traveling the World

By Nancy Stoops

Ever since I was a very small girl I always knew that I wanted to travel around the entire world.  It really all began when I was seventeen I graduated high school a semester early and spent three months in Europe.  At that point I became addicted to wanting to see the entire world.  Now I have just two more continents to go.  The plan is to see Australia this year and then as I turn sixty go to Antarctica.  I know I will always continue to travel even though I will have literally made it around the world very soon.

There are many ways to learn and I have experienced most of them.  Travel is a very unique way to learn because you literally become part of what you are learning.  There is no better to understand a country or its’ culture than to become immersed in it.  I have gotten to know people from so many different cultures and have received blessings from a holy person within each of these cultures.  I have also been part of many wonderful ceremonies and traditions, one of which involved dancing with goats in a Peruvian village.  I will never forgot my African chief my Thailand monk, all my shamans and all the other wonder spiritual beings that I spent time with being blessed.  I has been my honor!

I also make sure that with each journey comes with a close up wild life experience.  I have walked, fed and swam with 4500lb tigers.  I have trained elephants, swam with sea lions, sharks, and mantas.  I have had the head of a cheetah in my lap for a petting session.  This year I want to hold a koala and feed kangaroos.  I love my life and travelling really enriches it.

Nixon re-elected president  history-101-web

By History.com

Richard Nixon defeats Senator George McGovern (D-South Dakota) and is re-elected President of the United States.

With only 55 percent of the electorate voting, the lowest turnout since 1948, Nixon carried all states but Massachusetts, taking 97 percent of the electoral votes. During the campaign, Nixon pledged to secure “peace with honor” in Vietnam. Aided by the potential for a peace agreement in the ongoing Paris negotiations and the upswing in the American economy, Nixon easily defeated McGovern, an outspoken peacenik whose party was divided over several issues, not the least of which was McGovern’s extreme views on the war. McGovern had said during the campaign, “If I were President, it would take me twenty-four hours and the stroke of a pen to terminate all military operations in Southeast Asia.” He said he would withdraw all American troops within 90 days of taking office, whether or not U.S. prisoners of war were released. To many Americans, including many Democrats, McGovern’s position was tantamount to total capitulation in Southeast Asia. Given this radical alternative, Nixon seemed a better choice to most voters.

In other races, the Democrats widened their majority in Congress, picking up two Senate seats. Almost unnoticed during the presidential campaign was the arrest of five men connected with Nixon’s re-election committee who had broken into the Democratic Party’s national headquarters in the Watergate apartment complex in Washington, D.C. The Watergate scandal ultimately proved to be Nixon’s undoing, and he resigned the presidency as a result of it in August 1974.

Elias “Eterno Champion” Chavira

By Racine Guajardo

Elias “Eterno Champion” Chavira is a Mexican American rapper from Compton, CA. He was originally born in Whittier CA, and then lived in East L.A. until about the age of 7, where he moved to Compton after the L.A. riots occurred.

At a young age Chavira developed a passion for music, saying, “I did my first freestyle at 11 years old when my cousin’s hyped me up to bust a flow. They inspired me to buy the latest Album by “2Pac” at that time, which was “All eyes on me”, after that I was stuck on Hip Hop.”

As he became a teenager, Chavira says, “My neighbor would come over my house and ask me to work on a mixtape with No Limit Records beats.” They recorded a few tracks; however the tracks hadn’t been released. After High School, he started free styling for fun. A friend suggested that Chavira should take it serious, so he introduced him to his uncle G.L. from Mil2Mil Records. He then recorded his first song the very next day. He made two albums with M2M record’s called “The Best of Ten” & “Worlds Apart”. Chavira rapped with M2M till about 2008.

After Chavira parted ways with Mil2Mil, he was able to focus on his own music. He came up with my own label S.M.O. (Sounds Made Original/Smoke Me Out) in 2008. Since then, he has produced 2 independent albums “Success is challenging”(2010) & “Inspired by Jealousy”(2012). As well as having a greatest hits album, that includes a catalog of his favorite songs between 2006-2016 Called “10 years in the making”.

Chavira talks about what sets him apart from others saying, “I’m not just out for the money; I’m building a strong loyal fan base. No voice overs (only the hook). I rap aggressive but I’m really a sweetheart.” Also saying, “My originality of bars is inspiring, uplifting, and catchy.”

Autumn Leaves

Pastor Mark Hopper

Pastor Mark Hopper

By Mark Hopper

My wife and I have dreamed for many years of going to New England to see the autumn colors.  This year we finally did it!

We flew into Boston and drove to a small town in southern Vermont.   We stayed at a cozy Bed & Breakfast hosted by a delightful couple.

The next morning, we were excited to see the many colors of autumn leaves right outside our bedroom window.

After a homemade breakfast, we drove north along state highway 100 up into the Green Mountains.  We learned later the name Vermont is the French word for green mountains!

We enjoyed a casual drive along the country roads.  The colors were amazing!  We took picture after picture but they did not accurately.capture the fabulous scenery.

After two nights in Vermont we drove on to northern New Hampshire.  We chose the famous Kancamagus Highway which threads its way from the Vermont border to Conway, New Hampshire.

This is one of the most popular scenic highways in New England.  The small, two-lane highway was lined with trees in full color.  They were bright red, sparkling yellow, brilliant orange and autumn gold.

During our two days in New Hampshire, we drove further north into the White Mountains and were amazed to see complete hillsides filled with color beyond description.  It was amazing!

It was like a symphony of color as far as you could see.  Every turn in the road revealed more spectacular beauty.  The hills really were alive with color and beauty.

We were fortunate to have great fall weather, too.  The clear blue skies and bright sunlight added to the vibrancy of the colors.

My wife and I ran out of words to describe the beauty of what we saw during those few days in New England.  It is a time we will never forget.

As we reflected on the beauty of the fall leaves, we were reminded of the creativity of God.  The Bible says that God created the universe and the world we inhabit.  His infinite power created the changes of the seasons and the beauty of our world.

In Psalm 19, it says, “The heavens declare the glory of God and the earth is His handiwork”.  I realize you may not have the opportunity to visit New England during the fall.

But, I hope you will watch for some autumn leaves in your neighborhood this year.  Take a moment to appreciate their beauty.  They remind us of His handiwork!

Turn On Your Headlights

mark-hopper-color-2x2By Mark Hopper

I have noticed that more and more cars are on the road with their headlights off.  This is especially dangerous in the early evening and as it gets dark outside.

I saw another car this evening driving dangerously with its headlights off and the driver seemed totally unaware.

Apparently, newer cars have a feature that turns the dashboard lights on inside these new cars, but the outside lights do not come on automatically.

In the good old days, the inside dashboard lights only came on when the driver turned on the outside headlights.  If it was dark inside the car, the driver realized that his headlights were not on either.

This new technology has created some very dangerous driving conditions.  I have seen many people driving with their headlights off.  But, because their inside lights are on, they don’t realize their headlights are not!

There is a passage in the Bible that relates this problem to our own lives.  In Matthew chapter seven, Jesus says that before we try to take a speck out of someone else’s eye, we need to remove the log in our own eye (Matthew 7:1-5),

In other words, before we point out the faults in the lives of other people, we should take a careful look at our own life and examine the faults in our own life

It is easy for us to notice when another car does not have its headlights turned on.  But, often we are not aware that our own headlights are off!

Two things cause serious problems in marriage.  The number one problem is a selfish attitude.  When people are selfish, a marriage will suffer.

The second major problem in many marriages is a critical attitude.  When one spouse focuses on the faults of the other, their marriage will suffer.

Before you start criticizing your spouse, stop and look in the mirror and see if there are things that you need to change in your own life.  As Jesus said in Matthew chapter seven, take the log out of your own eye first!

Let me encourage you to pay closer attention when you are driving.  Make sure your headlights are on when you drive in the evening and night.  For your safety and the safety of others.

And, when you are experiencing conflict in your marriage or other relationships, check your headlights first.  Are your headlights on?  There may be  some changes that you first need to make in your life!

Our Life

Leap Of Faith

By Sarah Sanchez

I worked for ABC Public Relations for the last nine years of my life. It was my very first job back when I was 16 years old; I rolled newspapers for some extra cash. I had a few other jobs but ultimately I stayed at ABC PR and went through a variety of different positions within the company. I worked hard to learn every aspect of the company because I just wanted to be a resource to our clients. Then eventually after all those years, I became Vice President of Operations.

Earlier this year, I was presented with an opportunity for a position at California Baptist University, which is where I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. The position was even in my field of study.  So I felt that this was a perfect opportunity to use my degree to advance in my career. There were a variety of other reasons for taking this job, such as I’d be able to get my Masters Degree almost paid for and I’d be working at the school that changed my own life. Deep down I knew I couldn’t pass up on this opportunity, but I’ll be honest, it was very hard for me to leave my position as VP.  I was leaving a company where I had so much responsibility and purpose, all in order to pursue a job that I had no idea if I’d even like. But I decided to take the position with a week and a half notice and I jumped into a world that I knew nothing about. I decided to take a leap of faith.

At first, it was extremely challenging to be in this new environment. I was with new people, doing new tasks, and in a place that was extremely out of my element. I will admit that I had moments of weakness. I had moments of frustration, crying in the bathroom, and regret for leaving my familiar job. I had a moment of doubt, wondering if I could do this new position and if I made the right decision.

But now that I’m two months in, I realized that this is what I was meant to do. If I had never taken that leap and jumped into a completely different world, I would’ve never been able to change the lives that I have changed so far at CBU. Recently, I had the opportunity to help a student receive the funds so she can pursue her dream of attending CBU to finish her education. She was so excited and filled with so much gratitude that it made me realize: this is why I’m here.

Sometimes it’s hard for us to take risks. I know it was extremely hard for me. But now that I’m on the other side of the worry tunnel, I realized that every bit of the struggles were worth it.

Maybe you have a job you need to leave, a dream you need to pursue, a place you want to visit, or a project you need to finish. Whatever it is, it’s time to stop procrastinating. Don’t put it off and don’t worry about the outcome anymore. Believe in yourself and believe that you can do it. It’s time to start today. It’s time to pursue your dreams. It’s time to take a leap of faith.

Ask Clark’s

I have been hearing a lot about essential oils lately. What are "ask clarks" headeressential oils and what are they commonly used for? Also, can essential oils be used internally?

A question from Jeremy of Palm Lake Arrowhead

By Clark’s Nutrition

Essential oils are very popular right now. Although the current rise in popularity has made a nice craze for the essential oil industry, a lot of these oils have been available for many years. The most common essential oils being used today are lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, frankincense and many different kinds of blends. What is an essential oil? Essential oils are the essence of plants. They are typically derived from plants with a distillation process that uses steam or a chemical extraction. This process removes the oils away from water and concentrates only the oils in one area during the distillation process. Essential oils are considered to be of higher quality when low temperature steam distillation methods are used vs. a high heat steam distillation process. Some essential oils are only available from chemical extraction processes. Further distillation of the extraction leaves behind minimal residues and a finished product of essential oils.

Remember when buying an essential oil for therapeutic reasons one should look for higher quality oils and also have some knowledge of the oils being selected. For instance lavender, one of the most popular oils is grown in different areas of the world. French lavender is considered to be one of the best for aromatherapy for a few reasons including relaxation, muscle calming and pain relief. French lavender that is grown in altitudes of 1,500-4,000 feet have more active compounds called linalyl acetate and linalool which have the relaxing qualities attributed to the aromatherapy effects that many people are looking for. Lavender grown in lower altitudes which is also known as Spanish lavender and in drier desert areas has higher amounts of camphor which is also found in French lavender but in less quantity. This Spanish lavender is nice for use in massage or pain relief but have less of the relaxing qualities. And finally lavender clones are grown in France as well but these oils are only used commercially for the perfume industry, some aromatherapy companies and food processers.  So remember to ask questions about the essential oil quality, manufacturing standards to make sure you are getting the oil you want and are looking for.

Essential oil effects are seen when inhalation or direct application to the body is done. Some essential oils can also be ingested, but often times they must be diluted. A common example of this is when ingesting peppermint oil for use as a mouth freshener. Many times dilution of an essential oil is recommended. So please pay attention to any details on the instruction of the use of the oil of choice. Essential oils have a direct effect on the olfactory or smell centers which can inadvertently affecting the nervous system and organ system of the body in many circumstances. When using an essential oil for the first time and especially with children please use caution.

How Caregivers Can Provide Better Care for Both Their Loved Ones and Themselves

By StatePointdid-you-know-web

More than 10,000 people in the United States turn 65 years old every day, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. This growth in the aging population has led to an increased number of people who care for loved ones in their homes.

“While many people are happy to take care of aging loved ones, playing this caregiver role can still be physically, mentally and emotionally draining,” says Jill Turner-Mitchael, senior vice president, Sam’s Club Consumables and Health and Wellness. “As a result, it can be easy for caregivers to forget about caring for themselves at times.”

To help, Turner-Mitchael and the Sam’s Club Pharmacists are offering time-saving, stress-reducing tips to help caregivers support their loved ones while also maintaining their own well-being.

  • Focus on food and fitness. Maintain a healthy, energy-boosting diet that includes organic fruits and vegetables, lean protein and vitamins. Try to stay active, as well. To keep yourself accountable, consider using a wearable device that tracks your daily diet and activity level.
  • Log on. To save time and effort, shop online when possible. In today’s digital world, it’s easy to get everything you need with the click of a button. Companies like Sam’s Club provide everything from groceries to personal care products online for those who don’t have time to make it into a club.
  • Give yourself a break. Convene a family meeting to discuss any challenges that you’re facing and see what others can do to lighten your load. Identify someone who can fill in for you for periods of time, so you can take breaks outside of the home to relax and refresh. Doing so will likely help you return to your role with even more energy.
  • Seek support. Find a caregiver support group that can help you make connections with others who understand your perspective. Seek out other existing resources that are designed to support caregivers, as well.

For example, Sam’s Club recently launched a new program for family caregivers, including a dedicated webpage that helps members find the products, expert advice and savings they need to make caregiving easier. Visit SamsClub.com/caregiving or the kiosks in select locations around the country for more information.

“As the number of caregivers rises, so does the importance of offering resources that make their lives easier,” says Turner-Mitchael. “As a club of the community, we are working to do just that, so caregivers can focus on what is most important – the health of their loved ones and themselves.”

  • Engage your employer. Around 42 million Americans act as caregivers while also working outside of the home, according to AARP. If you are juggling work and home responsibilities, ask your manager about perks or policies that may help you find balance, such as flexible work schedules, emergency time off or on-site eldercare.

Neglecting your own health does no one any favors, so don’t let caregiving mean the end of self-care. With the right resources and resolve, rest assured that you can provide the best care possible while also maintaining your own health.

Artist Corner

“Some Days I’m Humble, Some Days I Struggle, Every day I Hustle”

Jaime “Cartoon” Diaz

By Racine Guajardo

Diaz was born in San Diego California where he lived until about the age of 6. artist-webHe then moved to Fallbrook which is just North of Escondido. In his high school years, he always tried to stick with attending an Art class. As Diaz exited high school, drawing and learning to build tattoo machines with his cousin George Serna became a hobby.

However, Diaz went through life working random jobs in the beginning then deciding he would get certified in auto repair. As he did that for a few years, he got comfortable and stable enough before he went back to practice drawing then tattooing, saying “and yes of course on friends and family.”

Eventually, Diaz was contacted by one of his close friends Cesar Speedy Gonzalez. Gonzalez opened up his tattoo shop, Skin Distortions and Diaz saying “I was honored when he asked me to work for him.” Although, Diaz found himself moving around shops trying to find where he would be most comfortable, he decided to open up his own spot, saying, “where I’d be the perfect boss or at least be near it.”As he had a passion for art, he states, “I never thought I would be tattooing especially not so lucky to being able to open up Family First Tattoo in Fallbrook, California.”

When Diaz was asked who influences him he said, “If I had to say who influences me to be a great artist I would have to say Nikko Hurtado.” However, he says the guys he works with have an impact on who also influences him “I see how they’ve grown and how great they are becoming they help me grow and I learn something new from them every day,” Diaz said.

Diaz wasn’t too sure about what makes him different from other artists but goes on to say, “Tattoo artists are almost a dime a dozen nowadays. Maybe some might see me as nothing spectacular. Others might see me cut from a different cloth. I guess if there’s anything different than what I see, I’d say it’s got a lot to do with the fact I haven’t forgotten what it’s like to be in the client’s seat. I don’t rush things. I don’t forget how nervous the whole process can be. Yes, I do this for a living but I haven’t lost my patience with the entire process. That’s been an invaluable tool for me.”

Many artists find a certain style they cling to or specialize in, Diaz says, “I think every artist wants to be known for something particular. Possibly a certain style or look. I want to be recognized for something more than just that. I want people to be able to look at my artwork and see where I came from. I want each line to covey how priceless this career is to me. How I got here. The type of dedication I give to this line of work.”

If Diaz could give any advice he said, “To follow your dreams. I’ve always had those haters you know the ones whom said you’ll never make it, I’m not where I want to be but I’m closer n closer every day.”

My best friend is bringing a lawsuit against my homeowners insurance- A letter from Jessica

Danice Akiyoshi

By Danice Akiyoshi N.D.

Q: My best friend is bringing a lawsuit against my homeowners insurance because she fell down at my house when she got drunk at my Fourth of July street party. There was nothing dangerous in her path, she just had too many Margaritas and fell off her own high heels. She says she has to sue my homeowners insurance because she’s been getting therapy on her hip and knee and doesn’t want to pay for it.  She said I’m being stupid for being mad because it’s just my insurance company and not me personally.  I think I’m ready to discontinue this friendship.  Am I too sensitive?  This doesn’t seem fair.

A: Your friend lacks personal integrity and the ability to take personal responsibility for her own actions.  These are not qualities that most people enjoy in their friendships.  If your friend had been injured on your property due to an unsafe condition then I would be totally on board for your homeowners insurance to become involved.  This is not attractive behavior in my opinion. Yes, take her off of your guest list for future parties and move on.  Holding a grudge over something like this would be a waste of your valuable time.  Let your insurance company sort it out after you give them your side of the story.

Our Life

One year of love

By Michael Armijo

There’s a song by Queen called “one year of love” that brings me peace. The song talks about how the singer had “one year of love, which is better than a lifetime alone.”

I’ve chosen to apply this song and this philosophy to my life and to the death of my friends.

At times I chose to sulk and miss those who were close to me and who are now gone, but I now reflect on how lucky I am to have had “many years of love” instead of “a lifetime alone.” I am very fortunate to have such beautiful memories when others have none, when others are left to walk this earth lonely and fearful.

Today marks the anniversary of the death of one of my closest and loving friends. I can cry about our past or I can remember how fortunate I am to have had so many years of love and friendship. I choose the latter.

It’s during these trying times our abilities and our philosophies are tested. And, I believe, how we spend this time of pain and reflection is a testimony of how strong and appreciative we are for that love and friendship. I also believe if we do sulk and wallow in pain, we are then insulting that friendship. We are ignoring that love. These people who are placed in our lives are placed there for a reason. We are fortunate to have such experiences and wonderful memories.

So today I will not insult the love I received from these individuals. Today I will appreciate that I was fortunate enough to have such valuable and priceless memories given to me. It’s just like giving a gift to someone: when you are given a gift, like a jacket or a warm scarf, you wear it and it comforts you when you’re cold and alone. You have that feeling of warmth and memory or their thoughtfulness with you. When that person is no longer in your life, do you throw out that jacket or scarf? Or do you keep wearing it and utilizing it for as long as you can? My friendships and loving memories should be the same: I will not discard them and throw them out by being hurt and feeling sad because they have left us against their will. I will not sulk and wallow in selfishness. I will not discard those wonderful and priceless times that enhanced my life and contributed to the success that I worked so hard to achieve and deserve. I will remember those precious gifts that were given to me and I will continue to wear them to warm my heart and comfort me during chilly times and loneliness.

So today I smile. Today I enjoy. Today I remember and cherish those wonderful gifts that were given to me to warm my heart and comfort me. And I will be thankful that I will, once again, have “one more year of love.”

Deciding to Start Therapy

By Nancy Stoops

Deciding to start therapy can be a very hard decision.  It’s hard to admit to ourselves that we can’t do it on our own and that we need some help.  The truth is even though we take care of ourselves sometimes we need the help of a good doctor or an antibiotic and sometimes surgery.  I have always referred to myself as an emotional surgeon.  What I mean by this, is that I open you up and help you begin to deal with all of those dysfunctional feelings that are making you feel so bad and so stuck.  Starting therapy takes an incredible amount of courage and is a sign of strength not weakness.  Please never feel embarrassed that you feel have run out of options and that now you need some help to get through some things.

Over the years I have worked with people 2-91 years of age dealing parenting, drugs, anxiety, depression, autistic spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, appropriate sexual boundaries and so many other issues. Between my groups and my private practice I have literally helped thousands of people learn how to live a happy and balanced life.  I want my clients to be healthy mentally as well as physically and spiritually healthy.  I think all three of these go hand in hand to maintain permanent well-being.

A good place to start is by visiting one of my groups and seeing if you like my style before you start spending your hard earned money.  Keep in mind my co-therapist is a registered therapy dog named Midnight. If you are a dog lover you will have a great team on your side while you are doing some very necessary healing or just getting some tips on how to live more fully!!!!
